Michigan Fast Food Strike Protests 'Slave Wages'

Fast food workers took to the streets, parking lots, and social media in search of a higher wage and a union. 

America is the land of opportunity and fast food jobs are often a stepping stone to success. For most of us, the first job we held was slinging burgers, making fancy coffee, and asking “Do you want fries with that?” The fight over a “living wage” has escalated into a war.

Across the country, a rallying cry for #StrikeFastFood D15, Fightfor15, Fast Food Forward,  and many other taglines all redirect to strikefastfood.org. The SEIU and organized laborhave been called in, pushing the home care workers to participate even though Michigan stopped the forced unionization of these workers just last year.

Where’s the funding coming? 
“Primary funding for both Fast Food Forward and Fight for 15 has been provided by SEIU,” according to Worker Center Watch.Yesterday in Detroit, people were arrested blocking traffic while calling for $15 per hour.  Many wore shirts emblazoned with the signature Detroit Tigers “D” 15 and on the back, Detroit15 for “Workers, for Families, For our Communities.”
At protest rally turned sit-in at  McDonalds near Mack and Canfield, Rev. W.J. Rideout III of Detroit’s All God’s People Church told local Detroit WXYZ news reporter Julie Banovic, “We’re serious about what we’re asking. 
Fifteen dollars and a union… $8.15 an hour  is an insult, we’re looking for $15 per hour. 
Believe it or not, inflation is up, everything is up,  taxes is up, milk, gas, everything, water is up, except minimum wage. 
That’s a disgrace. 
That they’re paying these people slave wages.”
