"FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, MI - Walmart, JC Penney, Meijer and the Lakes Mall will each pay tens of thousands of dollars in new taxes to offset the cost of police calls in Fruitport Township.
Walmart, located at 1879 E. Sherman Blvd., is slated to pay the highest amount, $88,515.34, according to special assessment tax rolls obtained by MLive/Muskegon Chronicle through a Freedom of Information Act request.Overall, the township plans to collect a total of $205,053 in additional revenues from businesses operating in a newly created special assessment district created last month that covers parts of Harvey Street and Sherman Boulevard.
The next three highest assessments include:
- The Lakes Mall: $34,176.
- Meijer: $22,471.
- JC Penney: $11,326.
Each business in the district will be billed on Dec. 1.
Township Supervisor Heidi Tice said assessments will recoup money the general fund has had to cover for police calls to retail stores for such complaints as petty thefts.
Public safety services are funded in Fruitport by two separate millages - 1 mill for police specifically and another 1.5 mills for general public safety and fire services. Affected businesses will pay the assessments in addition to the tax millages..."
