"When a movement believes that toppling a statue of someone who has been dead for centuries will change anything they experience today, it gives insight into the weakness of the basis for the movement.
Similarly, when in contemporary times people seek to appease the same movement through symbolic acts of contrition, it exposes their own weakness of character and reveals that the act of “contrition” is not true contrition at all, only a public showing of how “sensitive” they are. 
In other words, it is not about assuaging the feelings of the alleged aggrieved people, it is about showing others in the appeasement crowd how virtuous the appeaser is.
It is sad and disheartening to watch because appeasement never works, and we know that...
