Union bailout coming!

Lee Bellinger's Executive Bulletin
"Enter Congressman John Mica (R-FL) to the rescue of overpaid, under-worked government employees!
The incoming chairman of the House Transportation Committee, Mica is a powerful backer of continuing the Obama Administration's backdoor bailout of bankrupt state governments.

This state debt nationalization scam is officially known as Build America Bonds (BABs).
Its insidious effect is to enable financially reckless states to borrow even more from bond markets rather than be forced to address their bloated budgets."

New York City streets unplowed, but at least sanitation workers retire well

New York City streets unplowed, but at least sanitation workers retire well Washington Examiner
"nearly 180 retired employees make over $66,000 year -- in other words, over and above the maximum salary of currently working employees.
In fact, 20 retirees make upwards of $90,000 in retirement, up to $132,360.
Couple this with how notoriously difficult it is to fire a public employee, and you'll see why a public employee crashing a snow plow into a car doesn't rattle city officials."

The Midwest Wind Surtax - WSJ.com

Review & Outlook: The Midwest Wind Surtax - WSJ.com
"You'd think poor Michigan has enough economic troubles without the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission placing a $300 million to $500 million annual surtax on the state's electric utility bills.
But on December 16 FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff announced new rules that would essentially socialize the cost of transmission lines across 13 states in the Midwest.

That region-wide pricing scheme, according to a study commissioned by utility companies, will force Michigan to pay about 20% of as much as $20 billion in new high-voltage transmission lines—though Michigan businesses and homeowners will get little benefit.
Thanks to FERC's new tariff, nearly everything ..."

"As long as Mayor Mike is in the dock, let us also note that when it comes to building a mosque near Ground Zero, he has from the start stood behind the First Amendment -- sort of.

That is, he likes the part that gives Muslims the right to build a house of worship just about anywhere they want.
But the part guaranteeing a separation between religion and government?
Not so much.
That much became obvious last week with the release of e-mails demonstrating that City Hall did much more than offer the mosque's organizers routine help.
In fact, it turns out that Team Bloomberg was heavily involved in operating the political machinery needed to ensure that various regulatory agencies approved the controversial project -- which has rightly drawn the ire of many 9/11 survivors and victims' families.

Even to the point of pressing Community Board 1 to cast an approving vote -- so that the chairman of the Landmarks Preservation Commission could be given the 'political cover' he so urgently sought before his agency denied landmark status to the existing building."

Japan and the Limits of Keynesianism

Japan and the Limits of Keynesianism - Megan McArdle - Business - The Atlantic
"Japan and the Limits of Keynesianism

Japan's budget is in a truly terrifying state.
Reading about the government's behavior reminds me of the worst accounts of compulsive spenders on the verge of personal bankruptcy--a sort of 'What the hell, we're screwed anyway, so let's not think about it and maybe go to Cabo for the weekend.'
The budget's structural position is what is known technically to economists as 'completely hosed'; borrowing now exceeds tax revenue, and debt service costs now eat up almost half of the tax revenue the government collects.

'Unsustainable' is too weak to describe the situation; I don't know how they're doing it now."

Japan is simply America, Michigan, Muskegon, Norton Shores ...a few years down the road.

Redistribution on steroids

seMissourian.com: Column: Mike Jensen: Redistribution on steroids

"In the midst of a colossal global concern for the economic stability of our great nation, Emanuel Cleaver, Missouri's 5th Congressional District representative, has one small earmark on his wish list that deserves some attention.

Cleaver has listed a new earmark -- one of several -- and he promises to 'fight for every one.'
But this is a whopping $48 billion package that must go down as the grandaddy of all earmarks.
Proposed by a gentleman named Lamar Mickens, president of the not-for-profit Quality Day Campus, the $48 billion earmark would funnel money into the inner cities to give money to the poor and thereby produce a much larger consumer class to buy the goods and services produced in this country.

Just call this redistribution on steroids.

Cleaver's office says this of the proposal:
'The Epicenter is a proposed estimated $48 billion (Phase One) mass scale urban reclamation project for combating, reducing, reversing and/or eliminating poverty within under served communities by utilizing mass scale economic redevelopment to bring about stability and self reliance."

On the Media: How the press missed SB 400 in 1999 - latimes.com
"The bill won approval on the final day of the state legislative session in the fall of 1999.
But searching this week for contemporaneous coverage of the law, I found little to nothing.

Reporters straining to keep up with 11th-hour deal-making that Friday in September gave plenty of attention to an agreement that would allow an expansion of Indian gambling operations around California.
A lot of attention also went to a couple of bills that cracked down on illegal sweatshops.
Another piece of legislation, providing gay students a legal shield against abuse, also made front-page news.

But SB 400 got only a handful of mentions — and terse ones at that — across dozens of papers and other outlets, including the Los Angeles Times. When Gov. Gray Davis signed the bill, it hugely expanded pension benefits for state workers.
It set a benchmark that would be followed by dozens of counties and cities."

According to a NYSUT blog, the curriculum “introduces general human rights issues” and “urges students to become personally involved in the protection of human rights.”"

"The federal government sued a suburban Chicago school district Monday for denying a Muslim middle school teacher unpaid leave to make a pilgrimage to Mecca that is a central part of her religion.

In a civil rights case, the department said the school district in Berkeley, Ill., denied the request of Safoorah Khan on grounds that her requested leave was unrelated to her professional duties and was not set forth in the contract between the school district and the teachers union.

In doing so the school district violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by failing to reasonably accommodate her religious practices, the government said."

Mommy — Michelle Obama — called and Obama had to go home. He let Clinton take over and clean up the mess. . . . Being president sucks right now. It will get worse. His programs are a failure. His party does not like him. So he sent Biden to talk to the party and Clinton to talk to the press. At this point, it is merely symbolic of a resignation. A bad weekend. But it certainly is not something I have seen before in presidential politics.”

West Virginia May Soon Set Nation-wide Pattern to Get Around the EPA

West Virginia May Soon Set Nation-wide Pattern to Get Around the EPA NetRight Daily
"Coal mining has long been under attack from environmentalists and especially the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The result of these attacks have caused coal mines to be closed until they receive certification and permits that meet the approval of bureaucrats that are decidedly anti-coal mining.
Hundreds if not thousands of coal mining jobs have been lost due to this bureaucratic nightmare.

In West Virginia though, a newly elected State Delegate has drafted legislation that would undo these unnecessary mine closures and put the miners back to work.
Gary Howell, elected to his first term in the State House of West Virginia in November, is wasting no time getting his “put West Virginia to work” legislation signed in to law.

Delegate-elect Howell told NetRightDaily.com, “[t]hese mines have met all the requirements for their EPA permits to be issued, but the Obama administration is simply not issuing the permits.
The Obama administration’s actions are illegal and are being challenged in the courts, however the court cases will take time.
The Intrastate Coal and Use Act will take effect immediately allowing the mines to open, which will not only increase employment but increase the tax bases without the need for increased taxes on the individuals and provide energy security for the nation.”"

FoxNews.com - Unions Look for Payback In the 'Lame Duck' Congress
"The unions are now making their first big push for lame duck payback, and it’s S. 3194, the so-called 'Public Employee-Employer Cooperation Act.'
Per usual, it has a wonderful name that is more or less the opposite of what the bill actually is—an unnecessary, expensive, and harmful bill that would force state and local governments to recognize union bosses as the exclusive bargaining agents for public-safety workers.

A vote on may come later this week.
This bill violates the basic tenets of our federalist system of government.
Local governments should not be forced by Washington, D.C. to impose forced unionization on their police, paramedics, and firefighters."

Pajamas Media » MSM Inertia: What We Can Learn from 120 Years of Climate Catastrophe Reporting

But when one looks back at the history of climate reporting, you find a remarkably consistent and recurring theme.
The global temperature has cycled from cold to warm to cold to warm again over the last 120 years.

The media cycles of impending climatic doom mirror the climate cycles themselves, but with a roughly ten- to fifteen-year lag.

It seems whenever the world warms, the volume of global warming stories increases to match the trend.

Conversely, when the climate cools the major media outlets pull on their long johns and warn us of the next ice age.

However, it takes many years for the media to catch up to what the climate is actually doing.

"According to multicultural theory, the 'white' race (never further defined) forms a privileged oppressor class, forever and completely at odds with members of other races.

Under these terms, every action taken by the white oppressors is illegitimate, while those taken by the 'subaltern' races are justified, no matter what their evident nature and intent.
As a global theory, multiculturalism possesses universal applicability under all circumstances.
Every aspect of racial and ethnic relations must be seen through the multicultural lens."

Dear xxxxx,

I wanted to let you know about an important development at the DSCC.

Senator Murray will be taking the helm here at the Committee at a critical time for Senate Democrats and there’s truly no better choice.
In 2010 we proved that strong candidates running aggressive campaigns can beat expectations.
We faced very strong headwinds this November, but we held off Republicans because grassroots donors and the truth were able to stop Karl Rove’s billionaire friends and their lies.

Patty Murray led this charge with a smart, aggressive campaign - a model for what all of our incumbents need to do in 2012 to be successful.
Patty is a great senator, a true fighter, and will no doubt have a strong term as Chair of the DSCC.

Send a message to Sen. Murray welcoming her to the DSCC.

Patty M is arguably the dumbest senator in recent history.
And the dumbocrats elected her to run their senate races for the next election?!!!

Back in my day

The Washington Post

Report from Week 228, in which you were asked to tell Gen-Xers how much harder you had it in the old days:

Second Runner-Up: In my day, we couldn't afford shoes, so we went barefoot. In the winter we had to wrap our feet with barbed wire for traction. (Bill Flavin, Alexandria)

First Runner-Up: In my day we didn't have MTV or in-line skates, or any of that stuff. No, it was 45s and regular old metal-wheeled roller skates, and the 45s always skipped, so to get them to play right you'd weigh the needle down with something like quarters, which we never had because our allowances were way too small, so we'd use our skate keys instead and end up forgetting they were taped to the record player arm so that we couldn't adjust our skates, which didn't really matter because those crummy metal wheels would kill you if you hit a pebble anyway, and in those days roads had real pebbles on them, not like today. (Russell Beland, Springfield)

And the winner of the velour bicentennial poster: In my day, we didn't have no rocks. We had to go down to the creek and wash our clothes by beating them with our heads. (Barry Blyveis, Columbia)

Honorable Mentions:

In my day, we didn't have dogs or cats. All I had was Silver Beauty, my beloved paper clip. (Jennifer Hart, Arlington)

In my day, attitudes were different. For example, women didn't like sex. At least that is what they told me. (Tom Witte, Gaithersburg)

When I was your age, we didn't have fake doggie-do. We only had real doggie-do, and no one thought it was a damn bit funny. (Brendan Bassett, Columbia)

Back in the 1970s we didn't have the space shuttle to get all excited about. We had to settle for men walking on the crummy moon. (Russell Beland, Springfield)

In my day, we didn't have days. There was only "time for work," "time for prayer" and "time for sleep." The sheriff would go around and tell everyone when to change. (Elden Carnahan, Laurel)

In my day, people could only dream of hitchhiking a ride on a comet. (David Ronka, Charlottesville)

In my day, we didn't have hand-held calculators. We had to do addition on our fingers. To subtract, we had to have some fingers amputated. (Jon Patrick Smith, Washington)

In my day, we didn't have mouses to move the cursor around. We only had the arrows, and if the up arrow was broken and you needed to get to the top of the screen, well, you just hit the left arrow a thousand times, dadgummit. (Kevin Cuddihy, Fairfax)

In my day, we didn't get that disembodied, slightly ticked-off voice saying 'Doors closing.' We got on the train, the doors closed, and if your hand was sticking out it scraped along the tunnel all the damn way to the Silver Spring station and it was a bloody stump at the end. But the base fare was only a dollar. (Russell Beland, Springfield)

In my day, we didn't have water. We had to smash together our own hydrogen and oxygen atoms. (Diana Hugue, Bowie) In my day, we didn't have Strom Thurmond. Oh, wait, yes we did ... (Peg Sheeran, Vienna)

Kids today think the world revolves around them. In my day, the sun revolved around the world, and the world was perched on the back of a giant tortoise. (Jonathan Paul, Garrett Park)

In my day, we wore our pants up around our armpits. Monstrous wedgies, but we looked snappy. (Bruce Evans, Washington)

In the old days, nobody asked you to sign petitions. The sheriff just came to your house and told you you was part of a posse. (Barry Blyveis, Columbia)

Back in my day, "60 Minutes" wasn't just a bunch of gray-haired liberal 80-year-old guys. It was a bunch of gray-haired liberal 60-year-old guys. (Russell Beland, Springfield, and Jerry Pannullo, Kensington)

In my day, we didn't have virtual reality. If a one-eyed razorback barbarian warrior was chasing you with an ax, you just had to hope you could outrun him. (Sarah M. Wolford, Hanover)

An Error By Dems May Allow The Lawsuit Against Health Care Reform To Succeed

An Error By Dems May Allow The Lawsuit Against Health Care Reform To Succeed TPMDC
"Quite often, legislators include what's known as a 'severability clause' in their bills.

These are meant to protect the bulk of a law in the event that a small portion of it is determined to be unconstitutional.
That small portion must go, or be changed, but pretty much everything else is allowed to stand.

In a sin of omission, Democrats left such a clause out of the health care law, and now the plaintiffs in at least one of the cases against it want the court to take an axe to the whole thing if the judge decides that the individual mandate provision is unconstitutional."

The democrooks are as stupid as they are dishonest.

Social Security cuts are part of deficit plan

My Way News - Social Security cuts are part of deficit plan
"proposed cuts to Medicare, curtailment of tax breaks and a doubling of the federal tax on a gallon of gasoline."

But federal spending on union employees and never-ending annual raises, bonuses and benefits and earmarks are just "ducky"!

"in 2009, he found 150 companies or organizations that provided sharing platforms.

Now he counts 6,000.

Among them: Zipcar, which allows urban dwellers to access a vehicle for as little as $6 an hour;
ThredUp, where parents can trade kids' clothes;
Airbnb.com, which allows people to rent out rooms to travelers;
and landshare.net in the United Kingdom, which matches land and garden owners with growers, who then share the produce."

This may be the best way to avoid predatory taxes and the mega-corporation's hold on us little people.

November Speaks, But Is Lansing Listening? Americans for Prosperity-Michigan
"A recent Associated Press article pointed out that “there are nearly 20 lobbyists for every lawmaker” in Michigan; a total of 2,783.
In 2009, Michigan fulltime lobbyists (many paid for with your tax dollars) spent almost $12 million more than in 2001, a 60% increase."

And who speaks for the Michigan taxpayer?
The Tea Parties are our only hope!

How Immigration and Multiculturalism Destroyed Detroit

Frosty Wooldridge -- How Immigration and Multiculturalism Destroyed Detroit
"Immigration will keep pouring more and more uneducated third world immigrants from the Middle East into Detroit—thus creating a beachhead for Islamic hegemony in America.
If 50 percent illiteracy continues, we will see more homegrown terrorists spawned out of the Muslim ghettos of Detroit.
Illiteracy plus Islam equals walking human bombs."

Can Republicans Talk?

RealClearPolitics - Will Dems Go the Class Warfare Route?
"These are the facts.
But facts do not 'speak for themselves.'

In terms of facts, the Republicans have the stronger case.
But that doesn't matter, unless they make the case, which they show little sign of doing.

Democrats already understand the need for articulation.
Robert Reich is only one of many articulate Democratic spokesmen.
But where are the articulate Republicans?
Do they even understand how crucial articulation is?"
