Political Pawns

By Tammy Derouin

When tragedy strikes we do everything we can to further protect ourselves and the ones we love. We go through many different stages of emotion. Shock and disbelief are certainly in the forefront as we struggle to grasp with what is happening. Shock eventually gives way to grief and or anger as we begin to comprehend and come to terms with our new reality.

Image result for Pawn From ChessIt is never easy to understand why such tragedies take place. Why do innocent people become victims? We try to recreate a better outcome with “what if” or “if only” possibilities. We even insert ourselves into the situation. What could we have done differently? Could we have prevented this moment in time? Trying to make sense of something so senseless can be exasperating. But, that's what we do, we try to find a reason and then we try to fix the problem so that it never happens again.

We have all dealt with personal loss or tragedies. We know the heart-wrenching feeling of helplessness. As a nation, we have also dealt with many tragedies from natural disasters, the loss of those who serve protecting our freedom, to attacks on our home soil by both foreign and domestic assailants. Once we begin to recover and acknowledge the reality, we want to prevent such tragedies and losses from ever happening again. Acting purely on emotion is however, very dangerous. Using our children as political pawns to promote an anti-American agenda is disgraceful, shameful and a national tragedy......

Media Misinformation About Arming Teachers - Just Facts

Image result for Well-trained teachers would be as proficient with firearms as policeMedia Misinformation About Arming Teachers - Just Facts
"Misinformation can be deadly, especially when it comes to issues like school shootings.
This is because it can build support for policies that increase fatalities and generate opposition to reforms that can save lives...
..Summary
Trump’s proposal to protect the lives of schoolchildren by arming selected teachers and amply training them is consistent with the following facts of criminology, security, policing, firearms, and active shooter incidents:
  • Adequate armed security is a major deterrent to would-be murderers.
  • The students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School had 40 times less security per person than the Superdome provides to sports fans.
  • Arming one of five teachers would give children similar protection to sports fans, or one guard per 80 students.
  • Police receive an average of 15 hours per year of firearm training, and recreational shooters fire just as accurately as police.
  • Well-trained teachers would be as proficient with firearms as police.
  • Generally untrained civilians save far more lives with guns than are lost in accidents.
  • A high-cost estimate for Trump’s proposal that includes giving teachers much more firearms training than police is less than 1% of public school spending.
  • The AR-15 used in Parkland and other shootings is not a weapon of war but a semi-automatic rifle.
  • AR-15s have more firepower than handguns, but handguns have an edge in maneuverability.
  • Arming one of five teachers would give them a major advantage of strength in numbers.
  • The reality of police response times means that the actions of civilians are often vital to saving lives in active shooter incidents.
Nevertheless, many major media outlets are ignoring these facts while propagating claims that are contradicted by them.
Given that the lives of schoolchildren and teachers hang in the balance, twisting the truth or hiding from it could have deadly outcomes."

Student government refuses to approve conservative student club, calls it ‘hateful’ - The College Fix
"Cornell College student leaders tell peers to just join College Republicans
Student government leaders at a college in Iowa recently refused to recognize a campus chapter of a popular conservative and pro-capitalism student organization, claiming the group is “hateful, sexist, racist” and engages in “discriminatory” behavior.
On Feb. 20, the Student Senate at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, refused to officially recognize a campus chapter of Turning Point USA because the “concerns regarding this potential student organization outweighed the group’s potential contributions to campus,” according to a written “rationale” of the decision obtained by The College Fix.
“These concerns were highlighted by the conflict between the values and policies of Cornell College and the actions of Turning Point USA leaders, members, sponsored speakers, or programs that included: hateful, sexist, racist, or otherwise demeaning or discriminatory messages; and, slandering college employees and attempting to restrict free speech through the Professor Watchlist,” states the document, provided to The Fix by student senate President Ethan Berube..."

Schools are safer than they were in the 90s, and school shootings are not more common than they used to be, researchers say - News @ Northeastern:
"The deadly school shooting this month in Parkland, Florida, has ignited national outrage and calls for action on gun reform.
But while certain policies may help decrease gun violence in general, it’s unlikely that any of them will prevent mass school shootings, according to James Alan Fox, the Lipman Family Professor of Criminology, Law, and Public Policy at Northeastern.
Since 1996, there have been 14 multiple victim shootings in schools, or incidents involving 4 or more victims and at least 2 deaths by firearms, excluding the assailant.
Of these, 7 are mass shootings, or incidents involving 4 or more deaths, excluding the assailant.
Two Decades of Multiple-Victim School Shootings

“This is not an epidemic”Mass school shootings are incredibly rare events.
In research publishing later this year, Fox and doctoral student Emma Fridel found that on average, mass murders occur between 20 and 30 times per year, and about one of those incidents on average takes place at a school..."

$1 billion opioid bill would limit prescriptions to 3 days - Axios
"Sens. Rob Portman and Sheldon Whitehouse — the cosponsors of the opioid bill passed last Congress — introduced an opioid bill today that includes $1 billion in yearly funding to evidence-based programs.
See the source imageIt also limits opioid prescriptions to three days to cut down on overprescribing, with exceptions for chronic pain treatment.
Why this matters: The authors' goal is to use this bill as a roadmap for appropriators to determine how to spend the $6 billion over two years in opioid and mental health funding...
Policy changes included in the bill beyond the three-day opioid prescribing limit for acute pain:
What the $1 billion per year includes:
  • $300 million to expand first responder training and access to naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal drug.
  • $300 million towards medication-assisted treatment.
  • $200 million towards recovery support services, which will help transition people from opioid addiction treatment into long-term recovery, which Whitehouse called a "gaping hole" in the previously-passed opioid bill.
  • $100 million on treatment for pregnant and postpartum women addicted to opioids
  • $10 million for an educational campaign on the dangers of opioids.

I think it’s got to be spent carefully.
And so what we’re saying is let’s take part of it, it’s 1/3 of it…over two years and direct it towards evidence-based programs," Portman said..."

Obamacare: 20 states file lawsuit to kill health care law, citing Trump mandate repeal - Washington Times:

"Twenty states filed a lawsuit Monday arguing the new law President Trump signed last year revoking Obamacare’s individual mandate actually makes the rest of the 2010 health law unconstitutional as well.

Image result for flickr commons images Supreme CoutLed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel, the lawsuit says the individual mandate — upheld by the Supreme Court in 2012 — was the crux of the Affordable Care Act’s legality.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts ruled that the mandate — and thus most of the ACA — was constitutional under Congress’s taxing powers. But the attorneys general say if the government isn’t collection money under the mandate, it’s not using the taxing power, so the law no longer has legal underpinnings."

"...In 2013, President Obama ordered the Department of Health and Human Services and CDC to “conduct or sponsor research into the causes of gun violence and the ways to prevent it.”
In response, the CDC asked the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council to “convene a committee of experts to develop a potential research agenda focusing on the public health aspects of firearm-related violence….”
This committee studied the issue of defensive gun use and reported:
  • “Defensive use of guns by crime victims is a common occurrence, although the exact number remains disputed….”
  • “Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million….”
  • [S]ome scholars point to a radically lower estimate of only 108,000 annual defensive uses based on the National Crime Victimization Survey,” but this “estimate of 108,000 is difficult to interpret because respondents were not asked specifically about defensive gun use.”
  • “Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was ‘used’ by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies….”

Incompetence Wasn't the Problem in Broward County

Incompetence Wasn't the Problem in Broward County:
"...I detailed some of this last week in an article on what one public interest magazine called the "Broward County solution."
In Broward County, they call it more modestly the "PROMISE Program."
In November 2013, Sundance first reported that Broward County was "willing to jump on the diversionary bandwagon."
See the source imageAs an attached Associated Press article noted, "One of the nation's largest school districts has reached an agreement with law enforcement agencies and the NAACP to reduce the number of students being charged with crimes for minor offenses."
The goal, as the article explained, was to create an alternative to the zero-tolerance policies then in place by giving principals, not law enforcement, the authority to determine the nature of the offense.
...Although nonsensical on the face of it – one is hard pressed to recall a crime spree by the disabled – this language opened the door for Nikolas de Jesus Cruz.

An adopted son of the late Roger and Linda Cruz, the future school shooter had a name that fit the "metrics" of the collaborative agreement, regardless of his DNA.
It is not hard to understand why Broward County officials would be eager to adopt this program. Miami-Dade had been receiving all kinds of honors for its efforts to shut down the dread "school-to-prison" pipeline.

On February 15, 2012, Miami-Dade County Public Schools put out a press release citing a commendation the Miami-Dade Schools Police (M-DSPD) had recently received.
The Department of Juvenile Justice had singled out Miami-Dade for "dramatically decreasing" school-related "delinquency."
Said M-DSPD Chief Charles Hurley, "Our mantra is education not incarceration."...
