In a highly controversial statement, Richard Chartres, 59 - who admits to regular visits to Russia - urged Christians to stop taking endless flights and to live a more 'eco-friendly' lifestyle.
He said: 'There is now an overriding imperative to walk more lightly upon the earth and we need to make our lifestyle decisions in that light.
'Making selfish choices such as flying on holiday or buying a large car are a symptom of sin.
'Sin is not just a restricted list of moral mistakes. It is living a life turned in on itself where people ignore the consequences of their actions.'
But the timing of his remarks means that millions of people who need to listen to his message will not be around to hear it.
An estimated 2.1 million holidaymakers crowded into Britain's airports at the weekend at the start of the school summer holidays.
They will be followed by millions more over the next few weeks as Britons' love of holidays abroad continues to boom.
Figures show we are taking more holidays than ever, with the total up 6.9 million last year to 66.3 million.
No political party would dare to say anything as outspoken as the bishop for fear of losing all support among their holiday-loving voters.

Lt. Col's Letter re Iraq: "I'm Tired"7/20/06 LtCol Joe Repya, USA "I'm Tired" Two weeks ago, as I was starting my sixth month of duty in Iraq, I was forced to return to the USA for surgery for an injury I sustained prior to my deployment. With luck, I'll return to Iraq to finish my tour.
I left Baghdad and a war that has every indication that we are winning, to return to a demoralized country much like the one I returned to in 1971 after my tour in Vietnam. Maybe it's because I'll turn 60 years old in just four months, but I'm tired:
I'm tired of spineless politicians, both Democrat and Republican who lack the courage, fortitude, and character to see these difficult tasks through.
I'm tired of the hypocrisy of politicians who want to rewrite history when the going gets tough. I'm tired of the disingenuous clamor from those that claim they 'Support the Troops' by wanting them to 'Cut and Run' before victory is achieved.
I'm tired of a mainstream media that can only focus on car bombs and casualty reports because they are too afraid to leave the safety of their hotels to report on the courage and success our brave men and women are having on the battlefield.
I'm tired that so many Americans think you can rebuild a dictatorship into a democracy over night. I'm tired that so many ignore the bravery of the Iraqi people to go to the voting booth and freely elect a Constitution and soon a permanent Parliament.
I'm tired of the so called 'Elite Left' that prolongs this war by giving aid and comfort to our enemy, just as they did during the Vietnam War.
I'm tired of antiwar protesters showing up at the funerals of our fallen soldiers. A family who's loved ones gave their life in a just and noble cause, only to be cruelly tormented on the funeral day by cowardly protesters is beyond shameful.
I'm tired that my generation, the Baby Boom - Vietnam generation, who have such a weak backbone that they can't stomach seeing the difficult tasks through to victory.
I'm tired that some are more concerned about the treatment of captives than they are the slaughter and beheading of our citizens and allies.
I'm tired that when we find mass graves it is seldom reported by the press, but mistreat a prisoner and it is front page news.
Mostly, I'm tired that the people of this great nation didn't learn from history that there is no substitute for Victory.

FROM LOCAL REPORTS
One cell phone call was all it took to create a traffic jam at Grand Haven and Airport roads Saturday after a gas station clerk mistakenly set the price at 31.9 cents a gallon at the pump.
Norton Shores police were called to Jack's Corner Store, 4190 Grand Haven, at 12:24 p.m. about a disturbance and an 'overwhelming' number of vehicles trying to get into the BP station there to buy gas.
Lt. Jon Gale said the station clerk was changing gas prices and accidentally set the pump at 31.9 cents a gallon for premium gas instead of $3.19.
'Apparently one customer started calling people, and before the station was aware of the mistake, the lot was packed, creating a lot of congestion,' Gale said.
The pumps were shut off, traffic was cleared and the correct price was then put on the pump, he said.
The 'price drop' went on 'for about 20 minutes before they got it shut down,' Gale said. The owner of the station declined comment.

My Way News: "MULTAN, Pakistan (Reuters) - Fateh Mohammad, a prison inmate in Pakistan, says he woke up last weekend with a glass lightbulb in his anus.
Wednesday night, doctors brought Mohammad's misery to an end after a one-and-a-half hour operation to remove the object.
'Thanks Allah, now I feel comfort. Today, I had my breakfast. I was just drinking water, nothing else,' Mohammad, a grey-beared man in his mid-40s, told Reuters from a hospital bed in the southern central city of Multan.
'We had to take it out intact,' said Dr. Farrukh Aftab at Nishtar Hospital. 'Had it been broken inside, it would be a very very complicated situation.'
Mohammad, who is serving a four-year sentence for making liquor, prohibited for Muslims, said he was shocked when he was first told the cause of his discomfort. He swears he didn't know the bulb was there.
'When I woke up I felt a pain in my lower abdomen, but later in hospital, they told me this,' Mohammad said.
'I don't know who did this to me. Police or other prisoners.'

The summary was only a small snapshot of the entire report, but even so, it brings new information to the American people. 'Since 2003,' the summary states, 'Coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent,' which remains 'hazardous and potentially lethal.' So there are WMDs in Iraq, and they could kill Americans there or all over the world.
This latest information should not be new. It should have been brought to public attention by officials in the intelligence community. Instead, it had to be pried out of them. Mr. Santorum wrote to John DeFreitas, commanding general, U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command, on April 12, asking to see the report. He wrote, 'I am informed that there may well be many more stores of WMDs throughout Iraq,' and added, 'the people of Pennsylvania and Members of Congress would benefit from reviewing this report.' He asked that the 'NGIC work with the appropriate entities' to declassify as much of the information as possible.
The senator received no response. On June 5, he wrote again, this time to John Negroponte, director of national intelligence, 'concerning captured Iraqi documents, data, media and maps from the regime of Saddam Hussein.' Even before I left for work this morning, I received 2 phone calls and 3 E-mails from friends joyously celebrating Al Zarquawi's death. FOX News anchors had a glow of giddy happiness about them. Callers into Bill Bennett's radio show were ebullient.
Man o man, what a way to start the day!
On the other hand were the Democrat channels, appearing as glum as if Bill Clinton had been caught lying on TV.
The anti-American channels, CNN and MSNBC had the murdered, Nick Berg's father on, denouncing Bush, the war and generally throwing dirty water on the wonderful news.
Most channels had "experts" warning us viewers not to expect "the violence" to end immediately. I know that no rightys would think that. Do these hate-America, TV-sound-bite spewers believe it? Why else would they warn us? The liberal media is so out of touch with the American public they don't realize how transparent they are. Bummer.... for them. No us! Ha!
I wonder how many Democrats called and E-mailed their friends to share the celebration this AM. Yeah, right.
Oh, and don't forget the Left "supports the troops", just not their mission. Like killing Al Z.

'I walked past David but only because there were far more experienced and effective people than myself to help him,' Inglis said. 'It was a phenomenally extreme environment; it was an incredibly cold day.'

Lieutenant-Colonel Geoffrey Masters, who has died aged 92, won the MC in Belgium in 1940 and a Bar in Italy three years later.
As a major in command of 54th Field Battery in September 1943 Masters led his unit ashore at Salerno in support of 9th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. Achieving surprise, the battalion captured the town of Battipaglia and advanced beyond during the night. But at first light the Germans counter-attacked with infantry and armour, and the observation post officer with the two forward companies, who remained at his post to cover the withdrawal, was killed.
Although the enemy was on three sides Masters organised two observation posts in the town, and brought down heavy artillery fire on the enemy positions. In their efforts to provide effective support, he and his comrades were eventually surrounded. But when the Germans took the town Masters, who was wounded in the arm, escaped down a side road with the remnants of Battalion HQ, and did all that he could to protect them as they came under a hail of fire which knocked out his scout car. The citation for the Bar to his MC praised his inspirational leadership, courage and dogged determination.

In retrospect, it seems oafish of Neville Chamberlain, Britain's prime minister in 1938, to have betrayed Czechoslovakia to Nazi rule in return for the empty promise of peace. Yet an overwhelming English majority looked with horror on the prospect of confrontation with Germany and a new world war, until Adolf Hitler forced England's hand by invading Poland. 'The appeaser hopes the crocodile will eat him last,' said Winston Churchill. Today's crocodiles may not be so patient.
Opposing voices in 1938 rang lonely and shrill, and just as shrill today sounds Daily Mail columnist Melanie Phillips in her portrayal of an emasculated Britain ashamed of its own national identity and anxious to appease the 'clerical fascism' of the jihadis. That will change, perhaps even before the print is quite dry on her new book. She warns that the West faces a religious war with Islam. I concur, and recommend Londonistan as indispensable background.
Britain, Phillips warns, is reaping what it has sown. A large minority of British Muslims are disaffected at best and seditious at worst. Phillips cites a 2004 Home Office survey finding that 26% of British Muslims felt no loyalty to Britain, 13% supported terrorism, and about 1% (up to 20,000 individuals) were 'actively engaged' in terrorism or support for terrorism.

During the program, the one-term Senator from North Carolina, made a publicity-provoking comment (video here) about the man who vanquished him and his erstwhile running mate John Kerry during the tumultuous campaign.
"George W. Bush is the worst president of our lifetime," he said. Edwards went on to say that Bush is worse that the Watergate-tainted, Richard Nixon.
This, from a guy who, when debating Vice-president Dick Cheney, brought up the fact that Cheney's daughter is gay. His intent was to put his opponent in an embarrassing situation while simultaneously making points with conservative voters on the volatile issue. You can't get much lower on the evolutionary scale than using the family of your opponent to score points. Perhaps that's why Mary Cheney, Vice President Cheney's lesbian daughter, labeled Edwards a "complete and total slime" in her recent book, Now It's My Turn: A Daughter's Chronicle of Political Life.
Edwards became one of America's super-wealthy trial lawyers by winning record jury verdicts and settlements that involved personal injury litigation. While running for his senate seat, and later for president and vice-president, he repeatedly told campaign audiences that he fought on behalf of the common man against the large insurance companies.
But those with knowledge of Edwards' legal career in North Carolina tell a different story. They say he always helped the little guy as long as he got the lawyer's share of the judgments -- typically a third or even forty percent. Legal expert Walter Olson, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and author of the book, The Rule of Lawyers, said Edwards' success in court . . .
