Michigan gov. readies for possible auto job losses
"Gov. Jennifer Granholm and her administration are preparing to retrain laid-off workers and take other steps if General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC merge."

Has anyone given any thought to the jobs these "retrained" workers will be retraining for?

The"PLAN" as I read it, is to pour a tsunami of Michigan taxpayer's money into the our state's woefully inefficient BigEducation lobby.

All the while increasing the costs for businesses in Michigan.

These retrained workers will have no jobs available in our state, no matter how retrained they might be.

We need more EMPLOYERS not more employees.

Once again, a boneheaded, upsidedown move that will produce the exact reverse owhat we need.

Javon Ringer-Creating a legacy

The State News: Creating a legacy
"Staying behind was senior running back Javon Ringer, who, aside from being the best back in the nation with his 1,548 yards and 20 touchdowns, also has proven himself to be a stand-up individual throughout his four-year stay in East Lansing.
Ringer, who ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns against the Boilermakers, went up and slapped the hands of the students in the first row of the section. Then he went to the next section and then the next, completing a loop around the stadium before running out of the Spartan Stadium tunnel for the last time."

DRUDGE REPORT FLASH 2008®: "BUSH ANGER: OBAMA AIDES LEAK CHAT DETAILS
Tue Nov 11 2008 09:28:10 ET

Just hours after President Bush and President-elect Obama met in the Oval Office of the White House, details of their confidential conversation began leaking out to the press, igniting anger from the president, sources claim.

'Senator Obama would be wise to keep close counsel,' a top Bush source warned.

'BUSH AND OBAMA AT ODDS OVER AID FOR AUTO INDUSTRY,' splashed the NEW YORK TIMES in an exclusive Monday evening, quoting 'people familiar with the discussion.'

The two met at the White House in private, without staff.

'Bush indicated at the meeting that he might support some aid and a broader economic stimulus package if Obama and congressional Democrats dropped their opposition to a free-trade agreement with Colombia,' claimed the TIMES.

MORE

The ASSOCIATED PRESS quickly followed with details of the conversation, citing 'aides who described the discussion on grounds of anonymity, citing the private nature of the meeting.'

Bush advisers view the leaks as an effort to undermine the president's remaining days in office.

'Senator Obama may not be familiar with a long-standing tradition of presidents holding their private conversations, private,' a senior adviser explained to the DRUDGE REPORT.

Voter turnout

The Volokh Conspiracy - -
"This article reports on studies by political scientist Curtis Gans that show that voter turnout this year increased only modestly, at most. As Gans points out, there was a significant increase in the raw total of votes from about 122.3 million in 2004 to as many as 128.5 million this year. However, he calculates that there was only a slight increase in percentage turnout of those eligible. As I pointed out in this post, there was a 4.7% increase in the number of people eligible to vote between 2004 and 2008"

States drain unemployment trust funds

States drain unemployment trust funds
"Michigan is hurting
Michigan, hit hard by the collapse of the auto industry, has essentially nothing left in its trust fund, said Norman Isotalo, spokesman for state's Department of Labor & Economic Growth. New initial claims are up 21% over a year ago, while the unemployment rate hit 8.7% in September, up from 7.3% a year earlier.
Though it has borrowed money from the feds to cover claims since 2006, Michigan has avoided paying interest on the loan by repaying it quickly. The state, however, no longer has the funds to repay the loan, which currently totals nearly $473 million. The debt will starting accruing interest in January, and the state will pass along the additional fees to employers."

Republicans deserved to lose

Republicans deserved to lose
"The problem is a movement that plays small-ball and cedes responsibility for infrastructure to business interests, leadership that rewards those who make friends rather than waves, an entrenched Party and Movement support system that mostly supports itself, an echo chamber that has rotted our intellect, a grassroots that is ill-equipped to shape the Republican Party, and a Republican Party that has replaced strategy with tactics, substance with marketing.
These problems can be fixed, but the fix is not cosmetic. The rot is deep. We do not need reformation of the Republican Party; we need transformation of the Republican Party. That is going to require fresh blood, new ideas, new infrastructure...and perhaps more than a little time in the wilderness."

What you were never intended to know in this election

What you were never intended to know in this election
"The Bradley Effect. Don’t believe these polls for a second. I just went over our numbers and found that we have next to no chance in the following states: Missouri, Indiana, North Carolina, Florida, New Hampshire and Nevada. Ohio leans heavily to McCain, but is too close to call it for him. Virginia, Pennsylvania, Colorado, New Mexico and Iowa are the true “toss up states”. The only two of these the campaign feels “confident” in are Iowa and New Mexico. The reason for such polling discrepancy is the Bradley Effect, and this is a subject of much discussion in the campaign. In general, we tend to take a -10 point percentage in allowing for this, and are not comfortable until the polls give us a spread well over this mark. This is why we are still campaigning in Virginia and Pennsylvania! This is why Ohio is such a desperate hope for us! What truly bothers this campaign is the fact that some pollsters get up to an 80% “refuse to respond” result. You can’t possibly include these into the polls. The truth is, people are afraid to let people know who they are voting for. The vast majority of these respondents are McCain supporters. Obama is the “hip” choice, and we all know it."

What It Will Take to Build a Rightroots Movement | The Next Right

What It Will Take to Build a Rightroots Movement The Next Right: "Put more succinctly, I've had people tell me conservative bloggers feel 'dirty' asking for money. This sense of modesty and restraint is not felt by the likes of Daily Kos, MyDD, and Open Left. Note the huge blue fundraising graphics that are the first thing you see when you visit their sites. And I'm sure you're probably thinking: 'Well, we don't want to be like Kos.' Well, if not being like Kos means not winning, then I certainly can appreciate the intellectual rectitude at play here. But for those of you who want to move the Republican Party in a different direction, you might want to try something else.
Ace encapsulates the right's reluctance to engage electorally, and what I suspect is going to be the rude awakening that comes as a result of that approach:
I never was all that big into this idea. I think it's now necessary if we're ever going to start winning like we used to.
The GOP needs to do its part, too. It shouldn't be up to John Hawkins to compile a list of House GOP challengers. The GOP needs a permanent online liaison, not just charged with sending out press releases and that sort of thing, but with providing information about candidates -- who's vulnerable, who's a solid challenger, etc."

Thomas Sowell : Obama and the Law

Thomas Sowell : Obama and the Law
"One of the biggest and most long-lasting 'change' to expect if Barack Obama becomes President of the United States is in the kinds of federal judges he appoints. These include Supreme Court justices, as well as other federal justices all across the country, all of whom will have lifetime tenure.
Senator Obama has stated very clearly what kinds of Supreme Court justices he wants-- those with 'the empathy to understand what it's like to be poor, or African-American, or gay, or disabled, or old.'
Like so many things that Obama says, it may sound nice if you don't stop and think-- and chilling if you do stop and think. Do we really want judges who decide cases based on who you are, rather than on the facts and the law?
If the case involves a white man versus a black woman, should the judge decide that case differently than if both litigants are of the same race or sex?"

If you are still "on the fence" remember that many of Obama's (Rev Wright's?) judicial appointments may not be colorblind, genderblind or even interested in our Constitution.
And many may outlive you and me!

The Age of Prosperity Is Over

The Age of Prosperity Is Over
"But unfortunately in this world there is no tooth fairy. And the government doesn't create anything; it just redistributes. Whenever the government bails someone out of trouble, they always put someone into trouble, plus of course a toll for the troll. Every $100 billion in bailout requires at least $130 billion in taxes, where the $30 billion extra is the cost of getting government involved.
If you don't believe me, just watch how Congress and Barney Frank run the banks. If you thought they did a bad job running the post office, Amtrak, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the military, just wait till you see what they'll do with Wall Street."

RedState: Stunning results in early voting in California. Smile redstaters

RedState: Stunning results in early voting in California. Smile redstaters: "The results are simply shocking. The polls showed Barack Obama with an 18 point lead in California just a few days ago. The results thus far are the complete opposite. In the most liberal state in the entire country, the results are that 99,000 Republicans have voted and 96,000 Democrats voted. In the mail-in balloting the results so far are that 9,000 Democrats sent in their ballots and that 5,000 Republicans did so. So with nearly 210,000 people having voted, the Democrats have only a 1,000 vote advantage !
If we take the liberty of assuming that all Republicans will vote for John McCain and all Democrats will vote for Obama, then the race is incredibly close."

The REAL Obama!

Shame, Cubed
"Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Barack Obama, in 2001:
You know, if you look at the victories and failures of the civil-rights movement, and its litigation strategy in the court, I think where it succeeded was to vest formal rights in previously dispossessed peoples. So that I would now have the right to vote, I would now be able to sit at a lunch counter and order and as long as I could pay for it, I’d be okay, but the Supreme Court never entered into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and sort of more basic issues of political and economic justice in this society.

And uh, to that extent, as radical as I think people tried to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn’t that radical. It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution — at least as it’s been interpreted, and Warren Court interpreted it in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties: [It] says what the states can’t do to you, says what the federal government can’t do to you, but it doesn’t say what the federal government or the state government must do on your behalf.

Greenspan a fool or a liar?

The Volokh Conspiracy - -#1224870175
"Greenspan was asked today when he realized there was a housing bubble. His answer was early '06. That's long after other observers (including your friendly neighborhood blogger, e.g.) had recognized that the unprecedented increase in housing prices, unconnected to any discernable fundamental factor beyond easy credit, had created a bubble.
Even more surprising, Greenspan explained that even after he realized there was a bubble, he never expected housing prices to decline so dramatically, because we had never had a nationwide decline in housing prices in the past. I'd heard Greenspan say this before, but I'm surprised he wasn't embarrassed to repeat it. Didn't he ever read a mutual fund prospectus ('past performance does not guarantee future results'). More to the point, given that the level of increase in housing prices, both nationwide and in specific markets, was unprecedented, why would anyone sensible look to precedent in determining to what extent prices may fall?"

That description doesn’t do this amazing story justice. It has more twists and emotional impact than a feature film. It’s a long video–nearly 30 minutes. But you’ll be glad you watched it.

Democrats to gut US military

Frank envisions post-election stimulus from Democrats
"After the November election, Democrats will push for a second economic stimulus package that includes money for the states' stalled infrastructure projects, along with help paying for healthcare expenses, food stamps and extended unemployment benefits, U.S. Rep. Barney Frank said Thursday.
In a meeting with the editorial board of The Standard-Times, Rep. Frank, D-Mass., also called for a 25 percent cut in military spending, saying the Pentagon has to start choosing from its many weapons programs, and that upper-income taxpayers are going to see an increase in what they are asked to pay.
The military cuts also mean getting out of Iraq sooner, he said"

Shame on McCain and Palin for using an old code word for black

Shame on McCain and Palin for using an old code word for black
"The 'socialist' label that Sen. John McCain and his GOP presidential running mate Sarah Palin are trying to attach to Sen. Barack Obama actually has long and very ugly historical roots.
J. Edgar Hoover, director of the FBI from 1924 to 1972, used the term liberally to describe African Americans who spent their lives fighting for equality."

Ya can't call a spade a spade?
Jeepers, calling one a "socialist" certainly is a slur.
But if we can't call a socialist a "socialist" just what IS the code word for a socialist?
A commie, totaliarian, anti-American Marxist?

glib vs BS

The Volokh Conspiracy - -: "Some thoughtful people simply have a tendency to confuse intelligence with the ability to be glib, or more precisely, to bs.
And I think that is much of what it comes down to--if Palin doesn't know the answer to a question, she just isn't that good at making something up. Biden, by contrast, is a master bs'er, as his debate performance exhibited. As a general rule, the less informed he was about the answer to a question, the more assertive he was in answering it, such as his extraordinary answer about the legislative role of the Vice-President. It is clear that he had not the slightest idea what he was talking about, yet he just plowed ahead throwing out assertions with rhetorical flair. Classic bs. Even on issues that were supposedly in his area of expertise, such as the Constitution, he wasn't even in the ballpark of being correct. Hoven picks up on Biden's whopper of answer about kicking Hezbollah out of Lebanon, but it is pretty much the same thing--aggressive bs covering a complete lack of any clue what he is talking about."

NYC term-limits extension set for vote Thursday

NYC term-limits extension set for vote Thursday

"Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposal to extend New York's term-limits law was put on the fast track for a vote Thursday in City Council, even though some members are still undecided about bypassing voters to give themselves and the mayor a chance at third terms.....
On Tuesday afternoon, the bill was put on the agenda for Thursday's council meeting.
"Bloomberg, a billionaire former CEO of a financial information company, argues that New Yorkers need him to manage the city through the financial crisis, and that it's too late for voters to vote on the bill before the 2009 mayoral race.

Opponents say voters, not the council, should decide changes to the term-limits law. Voters set the current limit of two consecutive terms in a 1993 referendum and reaffirmed it three years later.

Has the world gone crazy!
The voters voted in a referendum, reaffirmed it 3 years later and this thug and his crook supporters are simply able to vote it down in a city council meeting?????

Is Muskegon County a Titanic in the making?

Dear unnamed County Commissioner,

Thanks for the invite!

I found the entire 3 hours very interesting... and distressing.

Some observations:
1. Pat Steele's plea "somebody just tell me the rules" seemed to sum up a very serious problem. It went unanswered. Why?

A simple request from a department head to the elected commissioners for clarity should not be unique.

But it is..... in Muskegon county.

2. I understand that getting a consensus among 11 commissioners is a challenge so why not create a "gang of 6" or more outside of your meetings and produce a specific proposal? Is it legal? Maybe 2 groups of 3 each to arrive at a consensus? Maybe an e-mail proposal that would be sent around for comments? It would have been nice to see a specific plan presented to the group. Does one exist?

Please come up with a plan!

At least if there was a vote on a specific proposal, each commissioner would be forced to take a public stand.

If no plan exists, why do you meet?

Seriously.

Why is there NO PLAN to keep our county from bankruptcy?

If you cannot provide a plan for the financial rescue of our county, why don't you all resign?

3. I was surprised that department heads complained about communication.
It may be that many of their complaints are simple grousing but Pat Steele asked a simple, public question that seemed to have no answer.

I know that e-mail is impersonal but at least there is a way to track each communication.

Isn't your charge to communicate your (us taxpayers/voters) desires to the hardworking county employees?

If there is a communication problem and you can't fix it, what do we do?

4. Have you considered a county wide "town hall" meeting. The word bankruptcy was brought up today.

BANKRUPTCY!!!!!!!

Big word!

Maybe a "Muskegon County in Bankruptcy" meeting would get some attention. So far it seems few realize the financial disaster that seems to be our fate.

Don't you think someone needs to tell the people?

I'm sure that you've had many discussions of similar ideas.

But, if I may, another personal comment from a citizen of Muskegon and a taxpayer living in our wonderful county.

I sensed a very clear reluctance from most (not all) of the commissioners to address the giant iceberg that our Titanic of a county has just been warned of from the yardarm.

Today's discussions of how to spend the new "casino" money were, to me, a surreal imagination of the officers of the Titanic obsessing about the minutia of tomorrow's breakfast .... and at the same time complaining about the annoying tipping of the tables where they sat ... as everything and everyone was moments from disaster.

My fear of the "frog in the slowly boiling water" seems to be the unstated policy of our Muskegon County Commissioners to hide the disaster from the people until it is too late.

YOU ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO CAN PROTECT US FROM DISASTER!

Please tell me that I am wrong.

Gentlemen, I'm sure you all have faced far more substantial personal challenges in your long and successful lives..... and defeated them.

Is your legacy to be that of the officers Titanic?

Why Cramer Should Be Suspended

Why Cramer Should Be Suspended
"We've been here before with Jim Cramer. On Thanksgiving Day of 2006, my Dad and I made it a point to enjoy a nice bowl of applesauce in honor of Jim Cramer. Why applesauce? Because in July of 2006 with Apple (AAPL) stock trading at its low near $50, Cramer told his viewers that they had to pull all their money out of Apple. 'It's turning into applesauce and I can't have you in it.' From that very day, the stock went on to double in price over the next four months while we were invested in option LEAPS that appreciated 20 times themselves over that span. Once Cramer was out, we knew it was time to get in. Believe me, applesauce never tasted so good as it did during that Thanksgiving dinner."

Cramer is a menace to any investor's wealth!

The Farhat Theorem

My ex-state representative, Dave Farhat tells us that most candidates get smarter and tougher if they have a primary fight.

It certainly seemed to work with B Hussein Obama. His rough campaign made his candidacy more formidable.

Perhaps the McCain's lackluster performance is a result of his years in a safe Senate seat and the guy just doesn't have the fighting skills honed for the new media.

If he wins, he'd better become a much better communicator.

If he loses.... it doesn't matter.

Either way, Farhat's Theorem seems even more accurate.

Candidate Banners Can Leave Clients, Businesses Bruised

Candidate Banners Can Leave Clients, Businesses Bruised: "'Businesspeople have to be mindful of the sentiments and sensibilities of their market trading area, and Prince George's County is overwhelmingly for Obama,' said community activist Arthur Turner of Kettering, who was among those advocating a boycott. 'People I have talked to look at the sign as a slap in the face. They feel it was blatant disrespect. . . . I have heard people say they will no longer patronize Colony South because of that disrespect.'
The outcry over the hotel marquee tapped into the passion -- and sometimes anger
-- that has characterized this fall's presidential campaign. Supporters of Republican candidate John McCain have vented their rage at rallies this week, applauding thunderously as McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, accused Obama of 'palling around with terrorists.'
Prince George's, though, is clearly Obama Country. As the nation's wealthiest mostly black community, where about 77 percent of registered voters are Democrats, residents have Obama placards in their yards, bumper stickers on their cars and the candidate's visage on their T-shirts.
The marquee supporting the GOP ticket in 'an area that is strongly African American was like putting a stink bomb in the middle of the living room,' said University of Maryland political Professor Ron Walters. 'What it does show is the emotions that are around this campaign and this election.'"

Imagine what these people will do if they own the Presidency AND the House AND a veto proof Senate.

Manipulated attendance forces cuts

Manipulated attendance forces cuts: "The Godwin Heights school board voted Monday night to implement cuts in the wake of an unexpected $1 million shortfall prompted by what the state determined was manipulation of student attendance at the district's alternative high school.
But some students, parents and teachers fear the outcome of those cuts.
'I want to know how you can expect kids to keep going to this district by taking away everything to them that makes the school worth going to?' student Nicole Hill asked the board before the vote.
She said too many cuts have happened already.
Godwin Heights administrators say most students won't be affected. They say they're only cutting classes and athletic programs without enough students to keep them viable."

Paul Krugman Wins the Nobel Economics Prize
"American Paul Krugman won the Nobel economics prize on Monday for his analysis of trade patterns and location of economic activity.
Mr. Krugman, born in 1953, and a professor at Princeton University in New Jersey and a columnist for The New York Times, formulated a new theory to answer questions about free trade, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.
'What are the effects of free trade and globalization? What are the driving forces behind worldwide urbanization? Paul Krugman has formulated a new theory to answer these questions,': the academy said in its citation. 'He has thereby integrated the previously disparate research fields of international trade and economic geography,' it said."
