"CalPERS made aggressive investments in real estate at the worst possible time, when inflated property values had peaked and were already beginning to decline.
As The Sacramento Bee's Dale Kasler detailed in a recent article, one CalPERS real estate misstep stands out in particular. In February 2007, CalPERS invested $922 million in a deal with LandSource Communities Development LLC that involved thousands of homes and lots in seven states including Florida, Arizona and California.
A month before the investment was finalized, Lennar Homes, a principal partner in the LandSource deal, announced it was writing off $500 million in real estate assets because of deteriorating market conditions. That should have served as a clear warning to CalPERS, but it did not.
Sixteen months later, LandSource filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Depending on what assets the partnership sells to pay off creditors, CalPERS could lose its entire investment, nearly $1 billion."

I'm at the age where that normally would "make my day" ..... but sadly, they only wanted to blow my driveway...... well you get my drift.......
These last 2 years two super quality gals have been knocking on my door to see if i needed my driveway cleared.

Michigan's term limits law restricts House members to three terms of two years, or six years total.
The 38 members of the Michigan Senate are limited to two terms of four years, or eight years total. Senate seats were not up for election last year. Both the House and Senate will be up for election in 2010."

The Avondale district in Auburn Hills received its waiver last month.
Avondale Superintendent George Heitsch tells the Detroit Free Press the online classes offers struggling students 'a shot at catching up.'"
I sure hope there is more to this story.... or less.
I do have a few observations:
1. Do our school districts already have an on line class program set up? When did that happen?
2. Or is this going to be another new bureaucracy that must be funded, and staffed and started from scratch? At enormous cost?
3. As Avondale Superintendent Heitsch so eloquently stated "the online classes offers struggling students "a shot at catching up."
What! Moving "STRUGGLING" kids from the teacher assisted classroom to their own home computer gives them " a shot at catching up"? !!!!!!!!!!
4. If computers are the answer for struggling students, will there be reductions in teaching positions? (little joke there...)
5. What if the little strugglers don't have a computer? A nifty high-speed internet connection.... any freakin' self control to keep them on their algebra lesson instead of all-day porn!!!!!!
6. Who authorized this idiocy? Seriously, what are their names!

Muskegon outsourcing?
I just was told that the address we must use to send in our city of Muskegon property taxes is in Chicago.... yes, THAT Chicago.
The Chicago of Senators-for-sale, Governors making license plates, "The Dailey Machine", "SouthSidePolitical Machine", etc.
And, oh yeah, home of our President-elect.
Anyway, I have a few thoughts about Muskegon outsourcing our tax collection services.
1. WHY!!!!!!
I assume the "official" reason is that it is "cheaper/more efficient" to outsource a city duty to the 2nd most corrupt city in the midwest (imagine if we outsourced to Detroit!).
2. But if it is "cheaper/more efficient" where are the savings right here in Muskegon?
What jobs have been cut?
What net savings accrue to us poor Muskegonites by this fiscal efficiency?
3. Why the silence from the City of Muskegon?
Why are we not proudly told by the city of their brilliant move to save costs to the taxpayers?
4. Why isn't The Muskegon Chronicle front-paging the great news that the city of Muskegon is utilizing the same methods of efficiency that The Chronicle recently imposed, ITSELF, to save moolah, outsourcing?
5. And if not pride at the new efficiency:
Where is the outrage?
The angry, double-dog umbrage!
The "say it ain't so Joe!" in high dudgeon from the editorialistas of our Muskegon Chronicle who have long warned us of the evils of outsourcing?
6. The silence is... not deafening.... simply consistent from our city of Muskegon and its lapdog/newspaper of self-destruction.

"'Why would I put anything on the Web?' asked Dan Jacobson, the publisher and owner of the newspaper. 'I don't understand how putting content on the Web would do anything but help destroy our paper. Why should we give our readers any incentive whatsoever to not look at our content along with our advertisements, a large number of which are beautiful and cheap full-page ads?'"
The "progressives" who run our nation's newspapers thought that joint operating agreements (like the destructive "merging of The Detroit News & FreePress) would allow each newspaper to have a monopoly.
And they were right!
Except monopolies rarely produce high quality...... and progressives were never interested in quality to begin with. So......
The customers took the free stuff (who needs quality when it's free!) and dropped the rest.
It is amazing that newspaper owners are at a total loss as to why their companies are collapsing.

"Ironically, Black now believes there may be a need for a countywide millage election to properly fund road maintenance and improvements. That's because the road commission gets most of its funding from the state, and that funding has been shrinking with each passing year.
'In this day and age, asking for a millage would be tough, to say the least,' Black said. 'It would have to be done by educating people about the need."

State sales tax at movie theaters, sporting events, taxis, buses, limousines and cable and satellite TV and radio.
Costlier driving with the repeal of the 8-cents-per-gallon sales tax cap on motor and diesel motor fuel, plus and increase in the auto rental tax.
Tuition increases at SUNY and CUNY, $620 and $600 a year respectively.
A 50 cent tax on cigars. The current tax is equal to 37% of the wholesale price, or 34 cents a cigar.

"Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Christopher Cox said Tuesday his agency repeatedly failed for at least a decade to pursue allegations of wrongdoing by Wall Street figure Bernard L. Madoff, the alleged perpetrator of a $50 billion Ponzi scheme.
Cox ordered the SEC's inspector general to look into the failure, saying the agency's staff had never brought the Madoff matter to the attention of commissioners after relying on information voluntarily produced by Madoff and his firm."

"A motorist learned over the weekend that not wearing a seat belt can lead to further difficulties with police -- especially if officers report finding drugs and money in your car.
A 35-year-old Muskegon man was pulled over by police at 9:40 p.m. Friday on the exit ramp from I-96 to Airline Road. 'He was stopped for not wearing a seat belt,' said Lt. Jon Gale.
Police then discovered he was wanted on a parole violation warrant and had been driving without a license. He was told he was under arrest.
But it was the package containing 71 grams of suspected powder cocaine on the passenger seat that landed the driver in even more trouble, according to police. A scale was found near the cocaine.
In addition, $3,800 cash had been shoved into a purse that was near the cocaine, Gale said. The purse belonged to a female passenger who later was released from custody.
'The subject admitted to selling cocaine and that it (the drug found on the passenger seat) was his,' Gale said.
The man was lodged at the Muskegon County Jail for possession with intent to deliver cocaine as well as the warrant and license offense. Arraignment was pending Monday morning."

The latest from the Harbor Theater
The ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW is this Saturday, December 20th at 10:15 PM. We will be selling participation kits, you can not bring your own into the theater. A participation kit will contain everything you need to fully participate with the film at the Harbor Theater, including noisemakers, glow sticks, toast, rice, newspaper, a roll of toilet paper and confetti. No lighters, squirt guns or hot dogs allowed. Also, no alcohol in the theater, but I am sure the Marine Tap Room would love to see everybody before and after the show in their costumes.
Opening on Friday December 19th is director Kar Wai Wongs(My Blueberry Nights, 2046, Chunking Express) revisoning of his epic film ASHES OF TIME, now titled ASHES OF TIME REDUX. Dubbed as "insanely gorgeous" by the New York Film Forum, this martial arts fantasy will appeal to fans of the original and modern classics like CROUCHING TIGERS HIDEEN DRAGON. Most critics agree, don't wait until the one is on DVD, see it on the big screen so you can appreciate all of its beauty. It also has a score of 91% on Rottentomatoes.com, for those of you that follow that.
Also opening, the rock opera REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA. Make is a horror/musical/comedy weekend with a REPO!/ROCKY HORROR combo.
Held over for a 2nd week, one of my favorite films of the year, JCVD. If you haven't seen it yet, give it a chance. It is a nice surprise.
And finally, if you aren't in the holiday spirit yet, come down Wednesday December 17th to see the free screening of the 1942 classic musical HOLIDAY INN.

Theater director Caden Cotard is mounting a new play. Armed with a MacArthur grant and determined to create a piece of brutal realism and honesty, something into which he can put his whole self, he gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in Manhattan's theater district. He directs them in a celebration of the mundane, instructing each to live out their constructed lives in a small mockup of the city outside. As the city inside the warehouse grows, Caden's own life veers wildly off the tracks. The shadow of his ex-wife Adele, a celebrated painter who left him years ago for Germany's art scene, sneers at him from every corner. Somewhere in Berlin, his daughter Olive is growing up under the questionable guidance of Adele's friend, Maria. He's helplessly driving his marriage to actress Claire into the ground. Sammy Barnathan, the actor Caden has hired to play himself within the play, is a bit too perfect for the part, and is making it difficult for Caden to revive his relationship with the alluringly candid Hazel. His autistic older brother Charlie suffers from ADS syndrome, and attends a special school on the days that he actually chooses to go. His father Simon is an enormous cricket fan who is prone to holding intense discussions with his teddy bear, and his mother Maggie is a free spirit who sleeps with pretty much whomever she pleases. Recently, Thomas' mother revealed that she is pregnant. As a result, Thomas finds himself looking after Charlie much more frequently than usual. When Charlie strips half-naked and dashes into the neighbor's house in search of a bathroom, Thomas storms in after him and encounters pretty classmate Jackie - who is currently attempting to take a shower. Mortified, Thomas begins to realize that he might not be capable of caring for Charlie. Later at school, Thomas realizes that he'll have to learn to swim before he earns his lifesaving badge. Of course every student in class needs to have a partner, and it just so happens that Thomas' partner is a pretty fellow pupil named Jackie.

Sammy Barnathan, the actor Caden has hired to play himself within the play, is a bit too perfect for the part, and is making it difficult for Caden to revive his relationship with the alluringly candid Hazel. Meanwhile, his therapist, Madeline Gravis, is better at plugging her best-seller than she is at counseling him. His is second daughter, Ariel, is retarded. And a mysterious condition is systematically shutting down each of his autonomic functions, one by one. As the years rapidly pass, Caden buries himself deeper into his masterpiece. Populating the cast and crew with doppelgangers, he steadily blurs the line between the world of the play and that of his own deteriorating reality. As he pushes the limits of his relationships, both personally and professionally, a change in creative direction arrives in Millicent Weems, a celebrated theater actress who may offer Caden the break he needs.

An adolescent boy from a most idiosyncratic family attempts to adjust to his new neighborhood as his sixteenth birthday looms on the horizon in this family drama from director Elissa Down. Thomas is about to turn sixteen, and as if adjusting to a new neighborhood, a new school, and new friends isn't enough for a teenage boy to contend with, his family is about as unpredictable as they come. His autistic older brother Charlie suffers from ADS syndrome, and attends a special school on the days that he actually chooses to go. His father Simon is an enormous cricket fan who is prone to holding intense discussions with his teddy bear, and his mother Maggie is a free spirit who sleeps with pretty much whomever she pleases. Recently, Thomas' mother revealed that she is pregnant. As a result, Thomas finds himself looking after Charlie much more frequently than usual. When Charlie strips half-naked and dashes into the neighbor's house in search of a bathroom, Thomas storms in after him and encounters pretty classmate Jackie - who is currently attempting to take a shower. Mortified, Thomas begins to realize that he might not be capable of caring for Charlie. Later at school, Thomas realizes that he'll have to learn to swim before he earns his lifesaving badge. Of course every student in class needs to have a partner, and it just so happens that Thomas' partner is a pretty fellow pupil named Jackie.

The latest from The Harbor
Following her wins for Best Actress at the New York and LA Film Critic's awards earlier this week, actress Sally Hawkin's star making role in Happy Go Lucky has now been nominated for a Golden Globe Best Actresss in a Comedy/Musical.
The film itself, has been nominated for Best Feature Comedy/Musical.
If you haven't seen it yet, get out and see it now! The Oscars are right around the corner!
And now that I have seen JCVD, I can say it lives up to the hype. You will be amazed at Jean Claude Van Damme - and it has a great soundtrack. Don't let his previous work stop you from seeing this film, which in my opinion is one of the best this year.
If you don't agree with me, check out Bill Idding's review of it in Friday's chronicle, or it's rottentomatoes site which shows that 87% of critics have given this movie a postive rating. Time magazine declared Van Damme worthy of an Oscar!

"As of now, a portion of the county sheriff's vehicles can run on ethanol. And eight Muskegon Area Transportation System buses and trolleys use natural gas.
The first opportunity to purchase alternative fuel vehicles could come later this month.
On Dec. 11, the county department heads could release a request for 16 vehicles, pending approval from the board of commissioners.
Even though the county is considering bidding on alternative fuel vehicles, the county could face significant barriers when incorporating them into its fleet.
Two major issues are cost and availability of fuel, said Joe Siedenstrang, the county's accounting manager.
'The department will have to decide whether or not there will be enough of a savings to go with alternative fuels or not,' Siedenstrang said. 'But the absolute final decision on what vehicles to purchase comes down to the board.'"

Unless new legislators work other state government jobs, they could have no more than 42 percent of their premium covered - 3 percent for each year if they serve the maximum 14 years.

"The New York Yankees have just asked New York City for an additional $259 million in tax-exempt government-backed bonds to finance the construction of their new stadium. This comes on top of the $940 million in previously approved bonds and up to $450 million in direct government spending on the project. Even prior to the current funding request, the new Yankee stadium had already gotten more government subsidies than any other stadium project in American history. The rival Mets are also asking for additional government bond for their new stadium, albeit a much smaller amount."
