The coming pension earthquake

EDITORIAL: The coming pension earthquake - Washington Times
More bailouts are on the horizon. Even though taxpayers will shell out at least $250 billion to cover losses from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, there’s another, much less known federally chartered corporation that’s racking up the red ink - currently $23 billion worth.
The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. (PBGC) could be the next to fall.

This east coast earthquake will really hurt!

US jobs on line as EPA moves

US jobs on line as EPA moves--Michael A. Walsh - NYPOST.com
Get ready for the sacrifice of tens of thousands more American jobs (at least) to feed the fantasy of “clean energy.”
Even as the “green jobs” promise proves to be a lie, the Obama administration is getting set to force the shutdown of countless power plants across half the nation.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s new Cross-State Air Pollution Rule, announced last month, will affect coal-fired electric plants in at least 27 midwestern and eastern states.
Set to take effect next year, the rule could shutter up to a fifth of the nation’s generating capacity.

With coal providing 45 percent of the nation’s energy, utility companies warn of an economic “train wreck” if the regulations -- based on Bush-era EPA proposals that the federal courts threw out in 2008 -- take effect.

One Wisconsin utility says its costs would jump $32.6 million next year, while the head of the Texas Public Utility Commission says the rules could lead to rolling blackouts -- especially given the short time the utilities have to comply with Washington’s iron fist.

This is not some minor tweak.

Obama's jihad against electric power will destroy companies, jobs and lives!

Obama’s EPA is Killing More Jobs than Economy Can Create

Brown: Obama’s EPA is Killing More Jobs than Economy Can Create responses from FERC Commissioners to an inquiry from Congress regarding the degree of agency coordination on the impact of the agency's new rules clearly shows the EPA statements were not truthful. Correspondence from the FERC chairman and commissioners revealed the commission is not working on a formal assessment of the impact of the EPA regulations on the ability of our power grid to reliably deliver electricity to the nation's homes and businesses.

Obama's eco-loonies are not only destroying our businesses, they're lying about and getting caught.

Where is the media on this?

Why Obama Can't Lead

Articles: Why Obama Can't Lead
For 22 years he attended the church services led by Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
African-Americans who attended his and other black liberation theology church services in Chicago are taught that their options are limited by the "other," and this other is white society.
Personal choice is not the route to success; choices are limited by the overwhelmingly oppressive power of dominant white America.
America is not, for Rev. Wright's paradigm, a land of opportunity, but instead a land of oppression.

In this political culture, the black political leader does not encourage his people to move forward, but rather convinces them that they cannot move forward.
Whatever choices they make, their future is determined not by personal choice, but by the restrictive confines of white society.
This is why actor-comedian Bill Cosby is viciously attacked when he suggests that African-Americans take responsibility for their own choices.

We see this in Muskegon with too many of the older local black leaders.
Thankfully the new voices (and some old, like Rillistine Wilkins) see personal choice and opportunity as positive options.

Black's Dilemma With Obama

Black's Dilemma With Obama - Star Parker - Townhall Conservative
Election of our nation's first black president is delivering an unexpected message to our black population.
Blacks are discovering that what a man or woman does -- their actions -- is what matters, not the color of their skin.
It seems ridiculous to point out that this was supposedly the point of the civil rights movement. Purge racism from America.
But blacks themselves have been the ones having the hardest time letting it go.

Three Dead In Weekend Air Show Accidents

Three Dead In Weekend Air Show Accidents

It was a tragic weekend for air shows as three fatal accidents occurred, killing a wingwalker and solo aerobatics performer in the U.S. and a member of the Royal Air Force's Red Arrows at a show in England.

On Sunday, wingwalker Todd Green was trying to perform his signature transfer from a wing to the skid of a helicopter when he fell about 200 feet to his death at the Selfridge Air Show near Detroit. By tragic coincidence, Kyle Franklin, whose wingwalking wife Amanda died of burns suffered in a March crash in Texas, was performing in his first air show since his wife's death and witnessed the accident. "It's really tragic," Franklin told reporters. "We are not thrill seekers trying to cheat death. We love what we do. We all know the risks involved."

On Saturday, Red Arrows pilot Flt. Lt. Jon Egging died after a low-level ejection in his Hawk aircraft at the Bournemouth Air Show and Bryan Jensen was killed when his highly modified Pitts Special, called The Beast, crashed on the field at the Kansas City Aviation Expo Air Show.

Egging was in formation with the Red Arrows when he split from the others and called a Mayday. Witnesses said he maneuvered the small jet trainer away from populated areas. His body was found face down in a river, not far from the wreckage of his aircraft. His wife and other members of his family attended the air show. Egging is being hailed as a hero. Jensen, a Delta Airlines 747 pilot, had been performing in air shows for 15 years. The aircraft, which had a modified Russian radial engine boosted to 412 horsepower, impacted vertically and caught fire.

David Kolb: Can Michigan Democrats catch up to Wisconsin and Ohio? MLive.com
"Will Michigan “Go Blue” again in the 2012 presidential elections?
I remain unconvinced, and I’m an optimist."

What a surprise!

As David Kolbe continues his pro-union, anti-employer crusade, his disdain for the simple American looking for a job begins to filter through his rhetoric.

What he misses (by design?) is the reality that the business climate in Wisconsin and Ohio has improved markedly.
Employment is up, state revenue is up and employers are flocking to the newly "red" states.

Because of the pro-employer policies of the governors and legislatures of Ohio and Wisconsin, more employees are earning a paycheck-and paying taxes.

Get the connection? Employers.....employees...?

That's good for workers, taxpayers and those who need the safety net that only profitable companies and hard working employees can guarantee.

Instead, Kolbe adopts the divisive, pure politics of the MoveOn.org and ACORN playbook.

Obama has taken the same big spending, anti-employer stance.

How's that working out for you?

Robert Heinlein

“Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man.
Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people.
Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as ‘bad luck.’”– Robert Heinlein

As true today as it ever was.

What Obama’s Brush with the Tea Party Reveals About Him

What Obama’s Brush with the Tea Party Reveals About Him « The Greenroom
"What’s more, being called a socialist is hardly on a par with being called a terrorist.
The term socialism may seem like a dirty word to a “centrist” like Obama, but it is a bonafide political ideology, not to mention a label proudly worn by at least one member of the U.S. Senate (and coincidentally a man who votes almost unfailingly with Obama’s congressional caucus). As far as I know, there are no self-described terrorists in Congress.

Lastly, as for the claim that Obama was not born in the United States, the birther controversy, like the truther controversy, is history. Everyone has moved on from it—except apparently for Obama."

Pat Buchanan Challenges Warren Buffett: 'Set an Example and Send a Check for $5 Billion to the Federal Government'

Pat Buchanan Challenges Warren Buffett: 'Set an Example and Send a Check for $5 Billion to the Federal Government' NewsBusters.org: "The liberal media are predictably fawning over billionaire Warren Buffett's op-ed in the New York Times Monday calling for new taxes on the super-rich.
This led MSNBC's Pat Buchanan on Monday's 'Morning Joe' to challenge the Oracle of Omaha asking, 'Why doesn’t he set an example and send a check for $5 billion to the federal government?' (video follows with transcript and commentary):"

The Real Reason Warren Buffett's Taxes Are Low

The Real Reason Warren Buffett's Taxes Are Low - Forbes
"Still, Mr. Buffett is not sharing the real reason that he doesn’t pay much in the way of income tax relative to his great fortune.
The secret is hidden in plain sight.
Mr. Worstall alludes to it when he mentions that Berkshire Hathaway does not in fact pay dividends.
Mr. Buffett’s secret which you can find blasted all over the Internet is one of his famous quotations:
You only pay income taxes at any rate on realized appreciation.

An investment with a holding period of forever incurs a capital gains tax of 0%, while all along the holder can be getting wealthy from appreciation.
That’s the real reason Mr. Buffett does not pay a lot of income taxes."

State employee unions put trust in unified negotiations

State employee unions put trust in unified negotiations Lansing State Journal lansingstatejournal.com: "Alarmed by a lack of response from state employee unions in crafting $145 million in concessions, state officials laid down a gauntlet in late July.
Come to the table, or prepare for layoffs Oct. 1.
State employee unions responded last week: We will agree to talk with you, but only with one voice.

Bargaining together for the first time, five state employee unions representing about 35,000 workers said they will negotiate together on wages and benefits as part of a new three-year contract.
The wage and benefits portion of that contract begins Oct. 1, 2012.

It's part of a bid by unions to flex their muscle and show solidarity as they negotiate several crucial issues that might include requiring all state employees to pay 20 percent of their health care premiums, retiree health coverage and other pay or benefit reductions totaling $145 million.
Such a united approach by civil service unions may represent a nationally rising trend as financially strapped states, facing federal funding cuts, square off with employees over pay and benefits, said Gary Chaison, a labor relations expert and professor of industrial relations at Clark University in Worcester, Mass.

So far, only civil service unions in a few states, such as Connecticut, have tried the approach.

'It gives them much greater power,' Chaison said.
'They see a common argument being used against them, the need to reduce the budget and they are fearful that a weaker union will agree to concessions."

Why the GOP should give Obama the higher taxes he wants

Sunday Reflection: Why the GOP should give Obama the higher taxes he wants Glenn Harlan Reynolds Columnists Washington Examiner
"Were I a Republican senator or representative, I would be agitating to repeal the 'Eisenhower tax cut' on the movie industry and restore the excise tax.
I think I would also look at imposing similar taxes on sales of DVDs, pay-per-view movies, CDs, downloadable music, and related products."

Toxic Raptors Still Grounded

AVwebFlash Complete Issue#205216#205216
"Toxic Raptors Still Grounded, Pilots Losing Currency

An investigation that grounded the fleet of F-22 Raptors back in May, 'has since expanded to include all aspects of the aircraft,' according to the Air Force Times, leaving deliveries on hold and pilots hoping for simulator time.
There are less than 160 Raptors deployed (accounting for roughly $65 billion) and two F-22 simulators -- one at Langley and another at Tyndall Air Force Base.
The actual jets have been grounded because they appear to be poisoning their pilots.
Tests have found multiple toxins in the blood of Raptor pilots affected by symptoms similar to hypoxia while flying the jets.
And the Air Force hasn't been able to source the problem, leading to a cascade of complications."

Deep Freeze for Salaries

Deep Freeze for Salaries
"As I continue to monitor developments in the public pension world, a new theme is beginning to emerge.
The only way to balance the books for some, perhaps many, state and local government pension plans will be to freeze public-employee salaries for most of this decade.
Despite valiant efforts by labor groups to raise or restore employee contributions to help bail out pension plans, the math just won't work.
Employers are facing daunting increases in pension costs and must soon begin to pay for retiree medical benefits as well."

If strong leaders don't fix this disaster, it will be the union workers and pensioners who suffer along with the taxpayers (and non-taxpayers).

Rhode Island Braces For Muni Crises In Wake Of Central Falls Bankruptcy

Rhode Island's unfunded obligation (at the state level) is $6.8 billion, and some experts argue it could actually be as high as $9 billion."
