Rate That Oligarch

Rate That Oligarch - WSJ.com:
You may have noticed that our friends on the left have begun to refer to the Koch brothers and other rich conservatives as "oligarchs." Like calling evangelicals "jihadists" and the tea party "racist," this comparison to the billionaires in Vladimir Putin's circle is meant to stigmatize and marginalize these men politically and socially.
This latest Saul Alinsky tactic got us thinking about who really qualifies as an American oligarch. If the definition is someone who becomes rich by association with government power and policies, and then assists those in power, the Kochs would barely make the list. Their companies are usually harassed by government.
With that standard in mind, we thought we'd offer liberals a list of some other American billionaires and where they rate as oligarchs.
We've also created a ranking method we'll call the Timchenko Scale after Gennady Timchenko, the Russian billionaire pal of Mr. Putin who was recently sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury.
George Soros.
The hedge-fund billionaire made his biggest score and his financial reputation shorting the British pound in 1992, but that was a free-market bet.
He now funds a myriad of left-wing causes, but then it's his money.
His support for statism in the U.S. is also offset to some degree by his support for transparency in dictatorships abroad. Oligarch rating: Half a Timchenko.

50 Years Ago This Terrifying Megaquake Jolted an Entire Ocean

50 Years Ago This Terrifying Megaquake Jolted an Entire Ocean - Wired Science:
"Fifty years ago today, the ground heaved, buckled and roiled as an enormous earthquake struck in Alaska’s Prince William Sound near the town of Valdez. Lasting 3 minutes (something we don’t even want to think about), the magnitude 9.2 quake is the second-largest ever recorded.
When all had settled, 131 people were dead. Most, including 11 people in Crescent City, Calif., were killed by tsunamis the quake sent crashing ashore along the northern Pacific Ocean rim. From Asia to South America, coastlines were flooded by waves that had come from Alaska.
In Valdez Inlet, the waves reached heights of more than 200 feet.
The animation below shows how these waves might have traveled over 20 hours from their epicenter to shores as far away as northern Chile."

A Brief History of Sex Ed: How We Reached Today’s Madness

A Brief History of Sex Ed: How We Reached Today’s Madness | Dr. Rich Swier
Today’s sex ed curricula are based on the widely-accepted teachings of depraved human beings.
Once upon a time, sex education was a simple biology lesson. Students learned the facts of life, and, with those facts, that sex is part of something bigger, called marriage. Teachers explained that this was the moral and healthy way to live.
In those days, people understood that men and women are different, and that their union is unique, unlike any other relationship. It went without saying that boys grew up to become men, and girls, women.
There were only two sexually transmitted diseases, and having one was a serious matter. Certain behaviors were not normal; individuals who practiced them needed help, and a child’s innocence was precious.
Things have changed.
Now we have comprehensive sexuality education. It includes discussion of identity, gender, reproductive rights, and discrimination. Children learn that they’re sexual from birth, and that the proper time for sexual activity is when they feel ready. They’re taught that they have rights to pleasure, birth control, and abortion.
The terms husband and wife aren’t used, the union of man and woman is one of several options, and morality? Well, that’s judging, and judging is not allowed.
You won’t find much biology in sexuality education, but there’s voluminous information on the varieties of sexual expression, the pros and cons of different contraceptives and abortions, and the harms of gender stereotypes.
...Modern sex ed began in the sixties. It was based on Alfred Kinsey’s model of human sexuality. Thanks to the brilliant and courageous work of Dr. Judith Reisman, we now know that Kinsey was both a fraud and a deeply disturbed individual.
For Kinsey, it was anything goes when it came to sexuality, and I mean anything. He believed, for example, that pedophiles were misunderstood, and their punishments unjust. “Sexuality is not an appetite to be curbed,” Kinsey insisted. He taught that, and he lived it.
...The bottom line: sex ed began as a social movement, and it remains a social movement. Its goal is for students to be open to just about any form of sexual expression. Sex ed is not about preventing disease, it’s about sexual freedom, or better—sexual license. It’s about changing society, one child at a time.
You don’t have to be a physician to understand the dangers of this ideology. All you need is common sense. While the founders of sex education are long gone, their vision is alive and well. The obligation to fight it rests on the shoulders of every responsible adult.

Oh Look, Rep. Mike Rogers Wife Stands To Benefit Greatly From CISPA Passing... | Techdirt:
"Just last month, Rogers accidentally tweeted (and then deleted) a story about how CISPA supporters, like himself, had received 15 times more money from pro-CISPA group that the opposition had received from anti-CISPA groups.
So it seems rather interesting to note that Rogers' wife, Kristi Clemens Rogers, was, until recently, the president and CEO of Aegis LLC a "security" defense contractor company, whom she helped to secure a $10 billion (with a b) contract with the State Department.
The company describes itself as "a leading private security company, provides government and corporate clients with a full spectrum of intelligence-led, culturally-sensitive security solutions to operational and development challenges around the world." "

In return, bowling manufacturing company Ebonite got the rights to release the bowler’s signature model ball.
At the time, the offer was 200x what professional golfer Arnold Palmer got for his endorsement with Wilson, and 100x what football star Joe Namath got from his deal with Schick razor.
Additionally, Carter was already making $100,000 ($750,000) per year through tournaments, exhibitions, television appearances, and other endorsements, including Miller, Viceroys, and Wonder Bread."

The Democratic Party’s War on Black People and How to Counter It

Roger L. Simon » The Democratic Party’s War on Black People and How to Counter It
As one of the relatively few people (percentage wise) to have spent more than a decade on both sides of our political divide, and also to have participated personally in the civil rights movement in the South in the sixties, I am going to say something that will be extremely controversial to liberals, indeed make them hate me.
Given all those years I spent on the two sides, I have observed liberals to be vastly more racist than conservatives and libertarians.
.....The answers weren’t that complicated.  All these social welfare programs, affirmative actions, etc. were a signal to African Americans that they were inferior, that somehow they couldn’t make it without help.  This became a self-fulfilling prophecy, a kind of mass Stockholm Syndrome.  And, quite naturally, it engendered a great deal of anger.
The system wasn’t all that different from giving heroin or alcohol to a family member to ease him or her out of their addiction.  It didn’t work but it kept them dependent.
Meanwhile, plenty of African Americans succeeded without this dubious “help,” because, quite clearly, they realized they didn’t need it and went on with their lives.  Motivating the supposed “help” the others were getting were two factors: 1. liberal white racism and 2. a desire on the part of the Democratic Party to turn African Americans into a class that would vote for them perpetually, something that party has clearly succeeded in to the complete detriment of African Americans, if we believe even part of all the depressing statistics.
So how do we counter this?
First of all, by calling out the true racists, not the fake ones.
A recent example is Rep. Barbara Lee’s (D-CA) attack on Paul Ryan for his actually rather tepid remarks on poverty.
She called Ryan a racist, when Lee herself, an African American, is far more racist than Ryan, working against the interests of her people.
Lee, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and others of their ilk are oddly like the Jewish sonderkommandos and kapos who lorded it over their own brethren in the concentration camps.
Well, perhaps not that bad, but bad enough.
As I have written before, and recently, as has PJM’s Zombie, instead of waiting to be attacked, we should call out the real racists first.
Offense, not defense.
The country is waiting.
And, most of all, you will be doing minorities a favor.
They are the ones, more than any, being oppressed.
Don’t be afraid of helping them get free of their oppressors by telling the truth.
It’s the most humane thing we could all do.

"Critics of the higher education system in this country and especially those who have long alleged college athletes get special treatment to maintain their academic eligibility have just been given an explosive piece of evidence.
It’s severely lacking, has a page with only 146 words and contains grammar errors and misspellings.
And it is worthy of an A-.

“It” is a final paper that was submitted by a University of North Carolina athlete and featured in an ESPN report this week.
That report detailed two whistleblowers surrounding the the academics scandal that rocked the university this winter, where student athletes were “encouraged” to take “fake” classes in order to pad their grades, raise their GPAs and stay eligible to play sports."
