Business case for diversity training: Better decision-making, profits

Business case for diversity training: Better decision-making, profits | Crain's Detroit Business
The idea that diverse teams make better decisions than homogenous groups is a guiding principle behind many executive education programs. But few topics in the business world can be as polarizing as workplace diversity.
That shouldn’t be the case, said researcher Scott Page, who directs the Center for the Study of Complex Systems at the University of Michigan.
“When I walk into the business world and say ‘It’s valuable to have somebody with a different background because they have a different perspective,’ that somehow sounds like a political statement,” Page said. “The point is, it’s really not. There’s a sort of mathematical truth or logic behind it.”
Diversity has power because people with different experiences are likely to categorize the world in different ways, Page explained. Making decisions based on the combination of those perceptions gives better results than relying on a single perspective.
Recent research supports that notion. In one study, a pair of UM professors analyzed more than 4,300 Wikipedia articles and found that bigger crowds led to better performance when the crowd was more diverse. In another, economists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and George Washington University found that switching from a single-gender office to an evenly split environment would increase revenue as much as 41 percent.

The Big Lie: 5.6% Unemployment

The Big Lie: 5.6% Unemployment:
Here's something that many Americans -- including some of the smartest and most educated among us -- don't know: The official unemployment rate, as reported by the U.S. Department of Labor, is extremely misleading.
Right now, we're hearing much celebrating from the media, the White House and Wall Street about how unemployment is "down" to 5.6%. The cheerleading for this number is deafening. The media loves a comeback story, the White House wants to score political points and Wall Street would like you to stay in the market.
None of them will tell you this: If you, a family member or anyone is unemployed and has subsequently given up on finding a job -- if you are so hopelessly out of work that you've stopped looking over the past four weeks -- the Department of Labor doesn't count you as unemployed. That's right. While you are as unemployed as one can possibly be, and tragically may never find work again, you are not counted in the figure we see relentlessly in the news -- currently 5.6%. Right now, as many as 30 million Americans are either out of work or severely underemployed. Trust me, the vast majority of them aren't throwing parties to toast "falling" unemployment.
There's another reason why the official rate is misleading. Say you're an out-of-work engineer or healthcare worker or construction worker or retail manager: If you perform a minimum of one hour of work in a week and are paid at least $20 -- maybe someone pays you to mow their lawn -- you're not officially counted as unemployed in the much-reported 5.6%. Few Americans know this.
Yet another figure of importance that doesn't get much press: those working part time but wanting full-time work. If you have a degree in chemistry or math and are working 10 hours part time because it is all you can find -- in other words, you are severely underemployed -- the government doesn't count you in the 5.6%. Few Americans know this.
There's no other way to say this. The official unemployment rate, which cruelly overlooks the suffering of the long-term and often permanently unemployed as well as the depressingly underemployed, amounts to a Big Lie.
And it's a lie that has consequences, because the great American dream is to have a good job, and in recent years, America has failed to deliver that dream more than it has at any time in recent memory. A good job is an individual's primary identity, their very self-worth, their dignity -- it establishes the relationship they have with their friends, community and country. When we fail to deliver a good job that fits a citizen's talents, training and experience, we are failing the great American dream.
Gallup defines a good job as 30+ hours per week for an organization that provides a regular paycheck. Right now, the U.S. is delivering at a staggeringly low rate of 44%, which is the number of full-time jobs as a percent of the adult population, 18 years and older. We need that to be 50% and a bare minimum of 10 million new, good jobs to replenish America's middle class.

BREAKING: Obstructionist Democrats Side with Illegal Immigrants Over National Security

BREAKING: Obstructionist Democrats Side with Illegal Immigrants Over National Security:

"The bill, put forth and passed by the House, would have fully funded DHS, but not Obama’s unconstitutional amnesty which was implemented via executive order. While Democrats say that fully funding DHS is imperative due to the mounting rise and threat of lone wolf terrorist attacks, and threats by ISIS, they will not do so if it in any way jeopardizes amnesty."

House votes 239-186 to repeal Obamacare – Guess how many Democrats joined Republicans | TheBlaze.com:

"The GOP-House voted Tuesday evening to fully repeal Obamacare, sending the bill to a Republican Senate that seems likely to at least try to pass it in the coming weeks.

There was little doubt the bill could pass in a House with a stronger Republican majority, and it passed easily 239-186."

Issa, Cummings re-introduce Freedom of Information Act reform in House | WashingtonExaminer.com:

"Reps. Darrell Issa and Elijah Cummings introduced Freedom of Information Act reforms to the House Monday that would force federal agencies to demonstrate why records should be withheld rather than asking requesters to prove why they should be released, among other provisions.

The new reforms are similar to the ones that passed the House and Senate unanimously last year but failed to become law when the 113th Congress ended before both chambers could vote on a compromise measure."

Minimum wage, maximum sorrow for San Francisco bookstores

Minimum wage, maximum sorrow for San Francisco bookstores » AEI | Carpe Diem Blog » AEIdeas
Proponents of the minimum wage law government-mandated wage floor that guarantees reduced employment opportunities for America’s teenagers and low-skilled workers can’t possibly anticipate in advance all of the adverse and unintended consequences of artificially raising wages for unskilled and low-skilled workers.
As an example of an adverse and unintended consequences that the citizenry of San Francisco didn’t anticipate last November when they overwhelmingly voted to increase the city’s minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2018, a San Francisco book store is closing.
Reason?
There’s a limit to how much a bookstore can increase book prices to offset higher labor costs because the publisher sets the list price of the book and it’s printed on the book cover.

From the website of Borderlands Books:
Borderlands is closing.
In 18 years of business, Borderlands has faced a number of challenges. The first and clearest was in 2000, when our landlord increased our rent by 100% and we had to move to our current location on Valencia Street. The steady movement towards online shopping, mostly with Amazon, has taken a steady toll on bookstores throughout the world and Borderlands was no exception. After that and related to it, has been the shift towards ebooks and electronic reading devices. And finally the Great Recession of 2009 hit us very hard, especially since we had just opened a new aspect to the business in the form of our cafe.
But, through all those challenges, we’ve managed to find a way forward and 2014 was the best year we’ve ever had. Overall, Borderlands has managed to defeat every problem that has come our way. At the beginning of 2014, the future of the business looked, if not rosy, at least stable and very positive. We were not in debt, sales were meeting expenses and even allowing a small profit, and, perhaps most importantly, the staff and procedures at both the bookstore and the cafe were well established and working smoothly.
So it fills us with sorrow and horror to say that we will be closing very soon.
In November, San Francisco voters overwhelmingly passed a measure that will increase the minimum wage within the city to $15 per hour by 2018. Although all of us at Borderlands support the concept of a living wage in principal and we believe that it’s possible that the new law will be good for San Francisco — Borderlands Books as it exists is not a financially viable business if subject to that minimum wage. Consequently we will be closing our doors no later than March 31st.

Obama Spokesperson Forced to Admit President LIED - Eagle Rising

Obama Spokesperson Forced to Admit President LIED - Eagle Rising:

"For Obama, lying is no big deal because the liberal mainstream media hardly ever calls him on any of his little stories. However, the same does not go for Press Secretary Josh Earnest, who does have to deal with the fall out from the President’s ridiculous claims. What I really love though, is when even the guys Obama pays to make his lies sound reasonable can’t come up with any way to defend him!

Which is exactly what happened to Josh Earnest after Obama’s Philly Flub."

Now The Feds Want To Regulate Your Fireplace

Now The Feds Want To Regulate Your Fireplace | The Daily Caller
Better go out and buy a gas fireplace and stove soon before federal regulations make them more expensive.
Federal officials are looking to regulate the energy usage of fake fireplaces as part of the Obama administration’s effort to fight global warming.
The Energy Department has proposed new regulations that would mandate that “gas-fired hearth products” like decorative fireplaces and stoves be more energy efficient and produce fewer carbon dioxide emissions.
DOE says its rule would save $165 over the lifespan of the average hearth and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 11.1 million metric tons through 2030.

"RUSH:  I'm telling you, this is why Scott Walker is running away with every Republican poll right now.  The consultant class doesn't get it. The Republican establishment doesn't understand it. They're scratching their heads, what's Walker done?  They do not get it.  They don't understand.  For two years I have been ballyhooing Scott Walker, not personally, but here's a guy not only has he drawn the blueprints for beating the left -- what are blueprints?  They are designs for building something.  Well, he's built the house. He wrote the blueprints and he built the building.  He built the machine that defeats the left.  He has shown how to do it, and he did it.  He is a walking gold mine."

Report: Chris Kyle’s Murderer NEVER Saw Combat, May Have Been a Muslim Convert:

"Few know the intimate details surrounding Kyle’s death and out of respect, few wish to dwell on them, but choose to simply remember the unyielding patriotism and dedication for which Kyle will forever be known.
However, as we near the trial of Kyle’s accused murderer, Eddie Routh, Americans can’t help but wonder, “Why?”

According to a recent report on Allen West’s website, authored by Editor-in-Chief Michele Hickford, Routh not only never saw a day of combat, but worked in close connection with Muslim inmates and expressed sympathies for how they were treated.

Hickford writes,"

Obama Tax Plan: President Goes All In on Confiscation - Breitbart

Obama Tax Plan: President Goes All In on Confiscation - Breitbart:

"Obama’s new plan would simply confiscate 14% of these foreign earnings, regardless of whether or not the money was brought back into the country. In future years, Obama would impose a 19% tax on all foreign earnings as they are earned. Worries about such tax proposals are a large reason why iconic US companies like Burger King, for example, are now foreign corporations.

Obama would use this one-time confiscation to plug a hole in the federal Highway Trust Fund. This idea is similar to the now-discarded White House plan to confiscate money from “529” education savings plans to fund a new entitlement to education at community colleges."

Despite All The Snow, Barack Obama’s Sick Obsession With Climate Change Rages On

Despite All The Snow, Barack Obama’s Sick Obsession With Climate Change Rages On | The Daily Sheeple:
"For Obama, what was once a political goal is now being transformed into something akin to a religious crusade.
But could it be possible that “the leader of the free world” is completely wrong about all of this?
No scientist denies that the climate of this planet has always been changing and that it always will be changing.
The level to which human activity influences this change is where there is disagreement.
Yes, certain human activities produce carbon dioxide.
But the amount of carbon dioxide produced by human activity is an extremely small fraction of the overall total.
Even if all human activity on the entire planet could be suddenly eliminated, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would still be about the same.
And scientists tell us that there were times in the past when levels of carbon dioxide on our planet were far, far higher than they are today.
So much, much higher levels of carbon dioxide would not destroy our world.
In fact, scientists tell us that life on Earth greatly thrived when there was much more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
...But in public schools in America today, our children are being taught that carbon dioxide is evil.  They are being told that it is a dangerous pollutant and that it is bad for the environment and that we must eliminate as much of it as possible.
Sadly, our children are never taught that the number one driver of “climate change” by far is actually the giant ball of fire that our planet revolves around.
It is called “the Sun”, and the impact that changes in the Sun have on our climate absolutely dwarfs anything that humanity is doing.
And in recent years our Sun has started to behave very erratically.
This is the real “climate change” crisis that people should be talking about.
Personally, I believe that tremendous changes to our climate are coming because of what is happening to the Sun.
But because this reality does not fit with the narrative that our politicians are pushing, it is ignored.  Instead, they want to blame “climate change” on human activity so that they can regulate and manage that activity.
It is all about convincing all of us to give them even more control over our lives.
Since virtually everything that we do could potentially “affect the climate” in some way, it gives control freak politicians the perfect excuse to micromanage society.
So that is why politicians like Obama are constantly hyping the “catastrophic” threats posed by climate change....."
