It stems from an audit of the department’s spending conducted by Open the Books, a nonprofit outfit pushing for more transparency in the federal government. This comes on the heels of previous revelations, such as the discovery that the EPA had run up a $92M tab for designer furniture recently. But this one is even more curious. Rather than blowing moderately big dollars on designer roll away desks, the EPA has apparently been dumping more than a million dollars into equipping a small army. (Daily Signal)

The headline of an op-ed by economist Stephen Moore in Investor’s Business Daily sums it up well: “Why Does the EPA Need Guns, Ammo, and Armor to Protect the Environment?”

And not just a few weapons. Open the Books found that the agency has spent millions of dollars over the last decade on guns, ammo, body armor, camouflage equipment, unmanned aircraft, amphibious assault ships, radar and night-vision gear, and other military-style weaponry and surveillance activities.

“We were shocked ourselves to find these kinds of pervasive expenditures at an agency that is supposed to be involved in clean air and clean water,” said Open the Books founder Adam Andrzejewski. “Some of these weapons are for full-scale military operations.”

So the obvious question here is… why? Their report cites one instance where the EPA went into lands owned by a group of miners in Alaska who were potentially hostile, so they would want to be protected from any sudden attack. But even that really doesn’t make all that much sense. A journey like that would obviously require a lot pf planning and preparation, and the feds have any number of other agencies who are fully trained and equipped to handle potentially explosive situations. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to bring a team from Homeland Security or the BATF to go with them? We have to ask how much military training a group of environmental scientists have really received which might prepare them for walking into a firefight..."

The Republican National Committee announced on Friday that it is suspending its partnership with NBC News for a GOP presidential debate in February.

In a letter to NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said Wednesday night’s debate hosted by CNBC, which was universally criticized for its handling of the contest, influenced his decision to cut ties with the network for the Feb. 26 debate at the University of Houston.

“The CNBC network is one of your media properties, and its handling of the debate was conducted in bad faith,” Priebus wrote. “We understand that NBC does not exercise full editorial control over CNBC’s journalistic approach. However, the network is an arm of your organization, and we need to ensure there is not a repeat performance.”

"Refugees seeking asylum in Denmark may soon be required to take mandatory courses in sex education.
The initiative gained steam last weekend, after three Eritrean men were arrested for allegedly raping a 25-year-old Eritrean woman in Hjørring, Metroexpress reported.
Five other asylum seekers were charged with rape there last year, the site noted.
Copenhagen’s parliament expected to support of the mandatory courses in what constitutes sexual consent, and all parties across the board are in favor of the effort to help integrate foreigners into Danish society.
Similar five-hour classes were introduced in Norway in 2011, with a focus on teaching asylum seekers and refugees that, “a kiss is not a yes to sex.”
The Norwegian program was launched following a series of sexual crimes committed by refugees near one of the asylum centers, The Local reported.
Linda Hagen – who runs 34 asylum centers in Norway – explained how men from conservative countries frequently misinterpret the more open Scandinavian attitude towards sex.
“It’s difficult if you come from a country where women never go out,” she said. “When you see a girl with a short skirt dancing at a party late in the evening, what kind of message will it give you?”
“It’s important to tell them that this kind of behavior or clothing doesn’t mean that it’s allowed for you to go the whole way. If a girl says ‘no’, it’s a ‘no.’”
Peter Skaarup, Danish People’s Party Spokesman, believes the same principals should be taught in Denmark.
“If they’ve done something in Norway that works, we should just copy it,” he told Metroexpress."

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks white supremacist groups, suggested in an article last week that the arsons were carried out by white supremacists.

The group quoted a journalist who covers African-American issues who said that the fires were “both alarming and not surprising.”

“This is alarming because domestic terrorism is alive and well,” David A. Love told the SPLC. “It is such a problem that the U.S. Department of Justice recently predicted increases in violent acts by white extremists who are responding to a new reality in which people of color will become a majority in America.”

The SPLC also quoted Love blaming “a vicious cycle created by rightwing politicians, the NRA and hate groups who stir up anger, fear and resentment over changing demographics and want their country back.”
