After weekend bloodbath, Chicago police chief makes surprising admission about city’s tough gun laws – TheBlaze

After weekend bloodbath, Chicago police chief makes surprising admission about city’s tough gun laws – TheBlaze:

"The head of the Chicago Police Department is now admitting that more gun laws don’t necessarily result in less gun violence because criminals don’t “play by society’s rules.”

Chicago, a city run by Mayor Rahm Emanual, former White House chief of staff to President Barack Obama, reported double the number of killings throughout Christmas weekend this year than last year. At least 27 people were shot, 12 of them fatally, "

My farewell column

My farewell column:
"Even the best things come to an end. After enjoying a quarter of a century of writing this column for Creators Syndicate, I have decided to stop. Age 86 is well past the usual retirement age, so the question is not why I am quitting, but why I kept at it so long.
It was very fulfilling to be able to share my thoughts on the events unfolding around us, and to receive feedback from readers across the country – even if it was impossible to answer them all.
Being old-fashioned, I liked to know what the facts were before writing. That required not only a lot of research, it also required keeping up with what was being said in the media.
During a stay in Yosemite National Park last May, taking photos with a couple of my buddies, there were four consecutive days without seeing a newspaper or a television news program – and it felt wonderful. With the political news being so awful this year, it felt especially wonderful.
Image result for thomas sowellThis made me decide to spend less time following politics and more time on my photography, adding more pictures to my website (www.tsowell.com).
Looking back over the years, as old-timers are apt to do, I see huge changes, both for the better and for the worse.
In material things, there has been almost unbelievable progress. Most Americans did not have refrigerators back in 1930, when I was born. Television was little more than an experiment, and such things as air-conditioning or air travel were only for the very rich.
My own family did not have electricity or hot running water in my early childhood, which was not unusual for blacks in the South in those days.
It is hard to convey to today’s generation the fear that the paralyzing disease of polio inspired, until vaccines put an abrupt end to its long reign of terror in the 1950s.
Most people living in officially defined poverty in the 21st century have things like cable television, microwave ovens and air-conditioning. Most Americans did not have such things, as late as the 1980s. People whom the intelligentsia continue to call the “have-nots” today have things that the “haves” did not have, just a generation ago.
In some other ways, however, there have been some serious retrogressions over the years. Politics, and especially citizens’ trust in their government, has gone way downhill.
Back in 1962, President John F. Kennedy, a man narrowly elected just two years earlier, came on television to tell the nation that he was taking us to the brink of nuclear war with the Soviet Union, because the Soviets had secretly built bases for nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from America.
Most of us did not question what he did. He was president of the United States, and he knew things the rest of us couldn’t know – and that was good enough for us. Fortunately, the Soviets backed down. But could any president today do anything like that and have the American people behind him?
Years of lying presidents – Democrat Lyndon Johnson and Republican Richard Nixon, especially – destroyed not only their own credibility, but the credibility which the office itself once conferred. The loss of that credibility was a loss to the country, not just to the people holding that office in later years.
With all the advances of blacks over the years, nothing so brought home to me the social degeneration in black ghettos like a visit to a Harlem high school some years ago.
When I looked out the window at the park across the street, I mentioned that, as a child, I used to walk my dog in that park. Looks of horror came over the students’ faces, at the thought of a kid going into the hell hole that park had become in their time.
When I have mentioned sleeping out on a fire escape in Harlem during hot summer nights, before most people could afford air-conditioning, young people have looked at me like I was a man from Mars. But blacks and whites alike had been sleeping out on fire escapes in New York since the 19th century. They did not have to contend with gunshots flying around during the night.
We cannot return to the past, even if we wanted to, but let us hope that we can learn something from the past to make for a better present and future.
Goodbye and good luck to all."

It's Official: Clinton's Popular Vote Win Came Entirely From California

It's Official: Clinton's Popular Vote Win Came Entirely From California | Stock News & Stock Market Analysis - IBD
"Democrats who are having trouble getting out of the first stage of grief — denial — aren't being helped by the fact that, now that all the votes are counted, Hillary Clinton's lead in the popular vote has topped 2.8 million, giving her a 48% share of the vote compared with Trumps 46%.
...But look more closely at the numbers and you see that Clinton's advantage all but disappears.
...California is the only state, in fact, where Clinton's margin of victory was bigger than President Obama's in 2012 — 61.5% vs. Obama's 60%.

But California is the exception that proves the true genius of the Electoral College — which was designed to prevent regional candidates from dominating national elections.
In recent years, California has been turning into what amounts to a one-party state.
Between 2008 and 2016, the number of Californian's who registered as Democrats climbed by 1.1 million, while the number of registered Republicans dropped by almost 400,000.
What's more, many Republicans in the state had nobody to vote for in November.
There were two Democrats — and zero Republicans — running to replace Sen. Barbara Boxer. There were no Republicans on the ballot for House seats in nine of California's congressional districts.
At the state level, six districts had no Republicans running for the state senate, and 16 districts had no Republicans running for state assembly seats.
...If you take California out of the popular vote equation, then Trump wins the rest of the country by 1.4 million votes.
And if California voted like every other Democratic state — where Clinton averaged 53.5% wins — Clinton and Trump end up in a virtual popular vote tie. (This was not the case in 2012. Obama beat Romney by 2 million votes that year, not counting California.)
Meanwhile, if you look at every other measure, Trump was the clear and decisive winner in this election."

Reports of mall disturbances light up social media
"A flurry of reports of mall melees and disturbances rippled across social media Monday on a day Americans swarmed shopping hubs for post-holiday bargains.
Disturbances that led to some malls being evacuated included reports from Elizabeth, N.J.; Fayetteville, N.C.; East Garden City, N.Y.; Aurora, Colo.; Tempe, Ariz.; Beachwood Place, a suburb of Cleveland; and Memphis.
About 10 people were injured during a melee at the Jersey Gardens mall in Elizabeth on Sunday evening, Mayor Chris Bollwage said in a tweet.
The injuries were non-life-threatening, Bollwage said.

How Trump Can Gain 100% Control at His Press Conference from Day One

How Trump Can Gain 100% Control at His Press Conference from Day One:
"The Washington press corps has long since lost any trace of adult behavior.
Once a President stands in front of them and asks for questions, the press corps turns into a shouting pack of petulant teenagers. They shout out their questions in a cacophony of chaos.
Here is how Trump can take control.
First, as each reporter enters the room, he/she is handed a 3x5 card and an instruction sheet.
The instruction sheet says this.
You have been given a 3x5 card. This card is for one question. Make it a good one. Make it precise. Please print clearly. President Trump will answer it unless it is a national security issue of the highest importance, which is unlikely. So, you really will get an answer. Ask exactly the question you want answered.
Pass your card to the person collecting the cards.
The cards will be set on the table at the table at the front of the room. One of you will be selected by the person collecting the cards to shuffle them. Then another one of you will be selected to shuffle them a second time.
The shuffled pack of cards will be handed to the President. He will answer them in order. If it takes five hours, he will answer all of them.
He cannot do this if there is constant shouting after each answer. That is why he has set up this arrangement. Here are the ground rules.
1. Anyone who shouts out a question will be removed from the room. (This will take extra time.)
2. The person escorted out will be banned from any future press conference in President Trump's term of office. There will be no appeals. Your employer will have to send another representative.
3. We will take a video of each ejection. This will be made available to every news outlet. They will also be posted on the White House site.
President Trump has said this: "I am not bluffing. Do not call my bluff. I am determined to keep these Q&A sessions quiet, efficient, and civil. You will get what you want: answers. I will get what I want: press conferences that are are not chaotic."
He would then come in. He would be handed the stack of cards. He would start answering.
Some loudmouth reporter will eventually yell out a question. Trump will have that person removed.
He would then say: "One more time: I am not bluffing. That person will not be allowed back to one of my press conference under any circumstances. If you want to stay on the White House beat, please do not imitate [him/her]." He would then answer another question.
He would stick to his guns, no matter what. If he has to clear the room, one by one, he would stick to his guns.
He would not have to do this more than four times in the first meeting. They will have gotten the memo. They will believe it.
This is a legitimate quid pro quo. He will not dodge questions. In turn, they will sit there, well behaved, as adults should.
They will all lust after a follow-up question for clarification. They won't get it.
He would establish the tone for his Presidency: the media are guests of the President. They must behave accordingly.
Every President should adopt something like thus. Trump can be the first."

Donald Trump, Gunga Din and the return of Manliness as a virtue

Donald Trump, Gunga Din and the return of Manliness as a virtue – Da Tech Guy Blog:
"A few weeks ago we reprinted the first of what will be three pieces on movies and the culture wars on the picture Gunga Din.
When getting permission to reprint these pieces I stated that with the election of Trump the cultural significance of these pieces and these movies had increased.
Why?
Consider this passage from my Gunga Din piece:
Through the entire picture manly virtue is celebrated: It’s celebrated when the survivors of the first battle, after an arduous trek bearing their wounded, form to march into the camp parade in good order. It’s celebrated as Din, with Cutter’s support, dreams of being a soldier instead of a water bearer. It’s celebrated when Cutter allows himself to be taken so Din can give warning. Ballantine refuses to leave his friend in the lurch even for the woman he loves. Cutter and MacChesney endure torture, Din gives his life to warn the regiment, and even the villain of the piece sacrifices himself in the hope of victory for his cause.
These manly values are not only conservative values, but are instinctive human values that since 9/11 the left has been unable to suppress.
The idea of work is a manly virtue, a virtue of labor, sometimes hard and oftimes monotonous but allowing you to support yourself and your family.
And while such labor can seem oppressive, particularly to one who has never done it, it confers dignity and independence.
It says that come hell or high water my wife and my children will be fed and sheltered and it will be done by my own hand.
But it’s even more than that, it’s also conveys an optimism that given time and effort one’s hard work will be rewarded, either by one’s own success or the success that the work allows one’s family to achieve.
This is the rust belt virtue that the industries so despised by the left has rejected.
Image result for Manliness as a virtueAnd that brings us to Donald Trump.
Trump is a person embraces the manly art of doing, not just as a person who works hard, in the value of labor, but the OPTIMISM of doing the idea that working hard brings rewards!
And part of that hard work is to stand up for yourself, and when Trump bluntly defends American labor, American products, American jobs, even when these things carry a risk, he is illustrating the manly virtue of courage, the willingness to accept risk to achieve a right end.
...Those bullies of the left can’t intimidate the rust belt worker who has the courage to defy convention and to say to those who would shun him over said virtue and support for Trump.  “Who cares?”
He’s not afraid of the bullies of the left, and that’s why the bullies of the left hate them and Trump so..."

Wall of apocalyptic-looking 'sea smoke' appears over Lake Superior harbor

Wall of apocalyptic-looking 'sea smoke' appears over Lake Superior harbor | MLive.com
"DULUTH, MINNESOTA - An ominous wall of fog that would rival something out of a Hollywood disaster film appeared near a Lake Superior port earlier this week.
In a short vide captured by Minnesota photographer Levi Drevlow, a freighter can be seen moving through the Great Lakes harbor in Duluth, Minn. on Wednesday, Dec. 21. In the distance, a massive wall of cloud-like matter can be seen.
And while it looks like something similar to the end of days, it's actually a naturally-occurring phenomenon known as "sea smoke." The same effect occurred in January."

Obama Administration Finalizes Social Security Gun Ban - Breitbart

Obama Administration Finalizes Social Security Gun Ban - Breitbart:

"In other words, once the beneficiary has the SSA’s attention–by having someone help with finances–the process of determining mental health status begins, becoming incrementally intrusive. And if a ruling of mental illness sufficient to meet the reporting threshold is handed down, then the beneficiary will be reported to NICS and prohibited from purchasing firearms.

Despite public outcry, the rules have now been finalized. The NRA-ILA reports:

Barack Obama’s Social Security Administration (SSA) issued the final version of a rule that will doom tens of thousands of law-abiding (and vulnerable) disability insurance and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients to a loss of Second Amendment rights under the guise of re-characterizing them as “mental defectives.” "

In his latest column here (Europeans Will Fight Back Against Invasion–No Matter What The NEW YORK TIMES Wants, December 22, 2016), Pat Buchanan wrote:

Liberals may admonish us that all races, creeds, cultures are equal, that anyone from any continent, country or civilization can come to the West and assimilate. That discrimination against one group of immigrants in favor of another—preferring, say, Lebanese Christians to Syrian Muslims—is illiberal and undemocratic.
But people don’t believe that. Europe and America have moved beyond the verities of 20th-century liberalism.
The cruel experiences of the recent past, and common sense, dictate that open borders are Eurail passes for Islamist terrorists, who are anxious to come and kill us in the West. We have to deal with the world as it is, not as we would wish it to be.
Specifically regarding whether promised assimilation will happen, we can guess that Buchanan himself is skeptical.
