History Lessons Are Turning My Kid Into a Scofflaw (and I Couldn’t Be Happier) - Reason.com
"If I'd lived then, I'd have still gone to saloons," Anthony, my 11-year-old son, said as we watched the Ken Burns documentary, Prohibition.
"But I'd have carried a gun in case I had to deal with police or militia."
He commented after a scene in which Portland, Maine's Mayor Neal Dow—nicknamed "the sublime fanatic"—ordered troops in 1855 to fire on an angry crowd outside City Hall.
Image result for history repeatsThey had gathered to protest the statewide ban on alcoholic beverages that Dow pushed through in his zeal to make the world a better place as he conceived such a thing.
Like most fanatics, sublime or otherwise, the mayor didn't have a lot of patience for disagreement. One man was killed and seven wounded that day by the forces of mandatory sobriety.
...So a couple of weeks after Anthony learned about Woodrow Wilson criticizing the idea of the Constitution restraining government power, he read about war-time President Wilson muzzling critics of his administration, seizing sectors of the American economy, and conscripting men into the military.
Huh.
Didn't see that coming.
Well, my kid sort of did.
He long ago realized that history lessons aren't just snapshots of the past.
They're also case studies of how people responded in certain situations—and insights into how their descendants might behave when faced with crises and opportunities.
And not just other people.
Because, as you read through history, exploring the outcomes of movements, individual activists, crusades, and dissenters, you test your own values..."

Bellwood, IL school board enables superintendent’s wild spending — despite deep debt | EAGnews.org

Bellwood, IL school board enables superintendent’s wild spending — despite deep debt | EAGnews.org:
BELLWOOD, Ill. – Illinois’ Bellwood School District 88 has some really serious financial problems.
As the Chicago Tribune put it, “the district is steeped in debt, and many of the students come from low-income homes.
...Most people would assume that means the Bellwood district lacks resources.
But as it turns out, the management of resources may be at the root of the problem.
Last summer a Tribune report revealed a very worrisome spending pattern in the district involving Superintendent Rosemary Hendricks and other top officials.
For instance, the school board voted to “replenish” a $105,103 retirement account that Hendricks had cashed out a long time ago, the news report said.
But getting that money back could be a problem.
Image result for Superintendent Rosemary Hendricks“District 88’s attorney said previously that Hendricks is required to repay the money to the district,” the Tribune reported.
“But documents obtained by the Tribune last week show Hendricks is six months behind on the repayment agreement, which was adopted in September 2015 when District 88 paid the Illinois Teachers Retirement System on her behalf. As of May, Hendricks had repaid $7,300.
...The added pension contribution from the school district will increase Hendricks’ annual retirement benefit from about $14,000 per year to about $77,000 under the state formula, the news report said.
...“Hendricks, 66, is now eligible to retire with the pension benefits of someone who has paid into the system for 25 years, though, as of last year, she had paid into it for only 4 1/2 years,” the Tribune wrote. “Taxpayers across the state will pick up the tab, potentially for years to come.”

"...So I’ll just pause to note here that this is yet another case of absimilation
Here yet again is the relevant passage from We Are Doomed, the one book you need to explain the modern world. Chapter 10, edited quote:
The English word “assimilation” derives from the Latin prefix ad-, which indicates a moving towards something, and the same language’s verb simulare, “to cause a person or thing to resemble another.” You can make a precisely opposite word using the prefix ab-, which marks a moving away from something. Many immigrants of course assimilate to American society … Many others, however, especially in the second and following generations, absimilate.
That’s what Salman Abedi did:
He absimilated, ending up hating the country that had taken in his parents.
It wasn’t just him, either.
His younger brother Hashim, 20 years old, and so presumably also born in England, seems to have been an accomplice to the bombing.
He was arrested by authorities in Libya on Tuesday.
There’s also a slightly older brother, 23-year-old Ismail, arrested by British police in Manchester, also on Tuesday..."

The blasphemy case against Bret Weinstein, and its four lessons for professors | HeterodoxAcademy.org:
"In the wake of the violence at Middlebury and Berkeley, and in the aftermath of the faculty mob that coalesced to condemn gender studies professor Rebecca Tuvel, many commentators have begun analyzing the new campus culture of intersectionality as a form of fundamentalist religion including public rituals with more than a passing resemblance to witch-hunts
Perhaps the clearest case yet of these dynamics is currently underway at Evergreen State College, in Olympia, Washington.
The accused witch is Heterodox Academy member Bret Weinstein, a professor of biology.
Image result for public rituals witch-hunts.On Tuesday, a group of Evergreen students disrupted a class he was teaching, surrounded him, cursed at him, screamed at him, and called for him to resign or be fired.
Campus police have told Weinstein that for his own physical safety, he should stay off campus for a few days. He held his Thursday class in an off-campus park.
What did Weinstein do to cause this reaction?
He violated blasphemy laws.
Here’s how.
For several years, Evergreen has held a “day of absence” in which students, staff, and faculty of color are invited to stay away from campus and take part in discussions about racism and other intersectional issues, organized by the school’s Director of First Peoples Multicultural Advising Services, Rashida Love.
But this year, the event was inverted; people of color were instructed to stay on campus while all white people were told to stay away from campus.
White professors were told they should not teach their classes.
White students were told they should not attend their classes.
You may or may not think this is a good idea.
But do you think that all professors should simply accept it and do as they are told by Ms. Love? Or do you think that it should be permissible for a professor to question the policy – perhaps even object to it?
Professor Weinstein objected...."

The True Purpose of the University | City Journal

The True Purpose of the University | City Journal:
"Yale University’s president recently provided a window into the modern university’s self-conception—an understanding embraced by both liberals and conservatives but flawed in essential ways.
Image result for yale students shouting downA primary purpose of a Yale education, President Peter Salovey told Yale’s freshman class last year, is to teach students to recognize “false narratives.”
Such narratives, Salovey claimed, are ubiquitous in American culture: “My sense is that we are bombarded daily by false narratives of various kinds, and that they are doing a great deal of damage.” Advocates may “exaggerate or distort or neglect crucial facts,” Salovey said, “in ways that serve primarily to fuel your anger, fear, or disgust.”
(Salovey repeated this trilogy of “anger, fear, and disgust” several times; it was impossible not to hear a reference to Donald Trump, though Salovey tried to stay nonpartisan.)
According to Salovey, the Yale faculty is a model for how to respond to false narratives: they are united by a “stubborn skepticism about narratives that oversimplify issues, inflame the emotions, or misdirect the mind,” he said.
Two things can be said about Salovey’s theme:

  • first, it is hilariously wrong about the actual state of “stubborn skepticism” at Yale.
  • Second, and more important, Salovey mistakes the true mission of a college education.

To assess whether Yale is, in fact, a bastion of myth-busting, it is necessary to return to one of the darkest moments in Yale’s history: the university’s response to a shocking mass outbreak of student narcissism in October 2015.
The wife of a college master had sent an e-mail to students, suggesting that they were capable of deciding for themselves which Halloween costume to wear and didn’t need oversight from Yale’s diversity commissars. (Halloween costumes have been the target of the PC police nationally for allegedly “appropriating” minority cultures.)
The e-mail sparked a furor among minority students across Yale and beyond, who claimed that it threatened their very being.
In one of many charged gatherings that followed, students surrounded the college master, berating him for the pain that his wife had caused them.
One female student was captured on video violently gesturing at the master and shrieking, “Be quiet!” as he gently tries to answer her tirade.
She then screams: “Why the fuck did you accept this position [of college master]? Who the fuck hired you?”..."
