1831 - Belgium became independent as Leopold I was proclaimed King of the Belgians.


1861 - The first major battle of the U.S. Civil War began. It was the Battle of Bull Run at Manassas Junction, VA. The Confederates won the battle.


1925 - The "Monkey Trial" ended in Dayton, TN. John T. Scopes was convicted and fined $100 for violating the state prohibition on teaching Darwin's theory of evolution. The conviction was later overturned on a legal technicality because the judge had set the fine instead of the jury.

"UC Berkeley’s SHIP, the Student Health Insurance Plan, will add two new benefits for transgender students beginning next month: fertility preservation and laser hair removal.

According to SHIP Manager Bahar Navab, the former is necessary as hormones used to treat gender dysmorphia — “the common diagnosis of individuals whose gender assigned at birth does not match their gender identity” — can lead to fertility issues.

The latter “provides a less painful, less frequent method of hair removal,” she says, and is one of the “critically important and often under-supported treatments for transfeminine people.”
According to The Daily Californian, last year SHIP expanded its transgender benefits to include “male-to-female top surgery.”..."

"A majority of Americans feel mainstream media coverage of President Trump is "too negative" according to a poll released Wednesday.
A Zogby Analytics poll showed that 57 percent of likely voters found the coverage of the president to be too negative, while 44 percent disagreed.
The poll is predictably split along party lines, with 87 percent of Republican voters saying the coverage is too negative and just 32 percent of Democrats agreeing.
Among independent voters, 54 percent believe coverage of Trump is too negative.
Fifty-five percent women and 51 percent of African-Americans, two groups that don't normally give high marks to Trump, also told pollsters that coverage is too negative.
Trump has often referred to the media as dishonest, "fake news" and the opposition party as Republicans continue to show less trust in the Fourth Estate.
The Zogby poll comes on the heels of an NPR-PBS Newshour-Marist poll this month that found that 91 percent of Republicans and 93 percent of Trump supporters don't trust the media.
The Zogby nationwide survey of 856 likely voters had a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points."

Then you’ll love this: Mike Allison at Turning Point News is reporting that students in a Purdue University class were given “Privilege Scorecards,” which is somehow stupider than it sounds.
The questionnaire takes eleven totally arbitrary categories and awards points based on your answers. Because that is how equality works. 
There is much of the usual nonsense present: White and Asian people earn 25 and 10 points, respectively, while Latino and Black people are deducted points; Women lose 50 points, but gain back 20 points if they are cisgender women.
...For some reason, Jews (against whom the majority of religiously-motivated hate crimes are committed) are awarded 25 points, while Christians are awarded 5 and Muslims lose 50. Jewish exclusion is not a surprise, since this comes from the same branch of leftism as the Chicago Dyke March (of “Zio” fame).
....Purdue, by the way, is a publicly-funded university."
