What if the celebrities, the politicians, and the medical experts are wrong, and the alleged bigots are on to something? What if transgender individuals aren't suffering from a mental dysphoria that can be treated externally with surgeries and internally with hormone replacement therapies? What if by acquiescing to the desires of those with gender dysphoria, and labeling those who challenge those desires as bigots, we are doing harm?"

In April 2010 a furor arose when it was reported that Mabus made the controversial proposal to name a United States Navy warship the USS John P. Murtha (LPD-26) after the late Pennsylvania Democratic congressman, John Murtha. Additional naming controversies occurred due to the naming of auxiliary ship after civil rights activist Cesar Chavez who has described his service in the U.S. Navy as, "...the worst two years in my life,"^[21][22] and a corvette/littoral combat ship after former Arizona Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords following her suffering life-threatening wounds in a 2011 mass shooting in her home district of Tucson, Arizona.^[23]

...Subsequent ship naming controversies include his January 6, 2016 announcement of his naming of another auxiliary ship after civil rights activist and sitting incumbent Georgia Democratic Congressman John Lewis. Mabus further stated that this particular class of auxiliary ship, of which the John Lewis would be the lead ship, would all be named after civil rights leaders.^[24] Mabus followed this action with his July 14, 2016 naming of the subsequent after gay rights icon and former San Francisco Democratic politician, the late Harvey Milk.^[25]

On January 1, 2016, Mabus ordered the United States Marine Corps to devise a plan on co-integration of male and female recruits in basic training, giving top brass a two-week planning period, along with requesting a subject matter expert, to report the best method of said plan.^[30]

Assistant Navy Secretary Sean Stackley has served as acting Secretary of Navy since Mabus departed.^[31]

Business ventures[edit]

In August 2007, he joined the board of EnerSys, the world's largest manufacturer, marketer and distributor of industrial batteries.^[32] From 2006 to April 2007, he was Chairman and CEO of Foamex International and helped lead it out of bankruptcy.^{[citation needed]} Less than nine months after his appointment, Foamex emerged from Chapter 11.^{[33][verification needed]}In February of 2009 Foamex again sought bankruptcy protection.^{[34][verification needed]}

Personal life[edit]

In 2012, he appeared in the movie Battleship as the Commanding Officer of USS Ronald Reagan.

Mabus made a cameo appearance as himself in the "It's Not a Rumor" episode of the TV series The Last Ship, issuing orders to the crew of the Nathan James via a recorded message; in the storyline, by the time the ship received the orders, Mabus had succumbed to the "Red Flu" virus.^[40]

"Brown University has announced it will be the recipient of a $30,000 grant from the Association of American Colleges and Universities to address “racial justice and equality.”

The Ivy is one of ten “Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation campus centers” according to The Brown Daily Herald, and as such its duty will be “addressing the historic and contemporary effects of racism and leading transformative change.” 

Appropriately enough.

Two of the initiatives the university is planning are discussion groups for female Muslim students and another for black students. 

The latter will focus on — wait for it! — “issues of identity, race, gender, colorism, classism, [and] dynamics within communities of color.”

“Colorism.”

"Taxpayer-funded PBS and NPR are now in the polling business with Marist College, and like the other networks, their polls are often used to support putting heat on Republicans. 
On Wednesday, they announced they had found a majority of Americans were disappointed with the president’s responsive to the violence in Charlottesville. 
PBS then ignored their own finding that 62 percent favored leaving Confederate statues in place, while only 27 percent want them removed. 
NPR reported it once, and then insisted that had nothing to do with Charlottesville.

Buried in the weeds: They also asked if Americans approve or disapprove of Black Lives Matter: 50 percent disapproved, and only 33 percent approved. 
They even asked about approval of Antifa, but few had heard of them yet: Five percent approved, 24 percent disapproved, 18 percent said they had no opinion either way, and 53 percent were unsure.
