After Alfie’s ventilator was removed on April 23, the boy continued breathing overnight, motivating Evans and James to launch another last-ditch appeal to an emergency High Court to take Alfie to Italy. The court rejected their appeal. It is unclear what will come next for the family."

Michigan Economy Rebounds, But Medicaid Enrollment Soars [Michigan Capitol Confidential]

Michigan Economy Rebounds, But Medicaid Enrollment Soars [Michigan Capitol Confidential]
"The total number of Michigan residents receiving either food stamps or Medicaid assistance increased by over a half-million people between February 2009 and February 2018.
While there was a modest decline in the number of food stamp recipients, it was swamped by much larger increases in the number collecting Medicaid benefits.
...But the number getting Medicaid benefits grew by 815,714 over the same period, according to data from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
As of February 2018, 2.6 million residents received either food stamps or Medicaid.
...The increase occurred even as Michigan was rebounding from sharp job losses during the 2000s and total employment hit a low of 3.9 million in 2010.
Since then, the trend has reversed, with 4.4 million Michigan residents having jobs in 2017, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The rise in the number of people getting medical welfare has been largely driven by the Obamacare Medicaid expansion championed by Gov. Rick Snyder and Republican legislative leaders in 2013.

Victor Davis Hanson-Respect Unearned - American Greatness

Respect Unearned - American Greatness:
"Washington’s self-righteous establishmentarians talk of professionalism when they act unprofessionally.
They refer at length to their intellectual and professional pedigrees when they prove incompetent.
And they cite their morality and ethics when they possess neither.
Image result for clinton comey mueller hypocrisyAnd then, adding insult to injury, when the public expresses abhorrence at their behavior, they accuse critics of unprofessionalism, a lack of patriotism, or reckless demagoguery.
...But what in their past has earned them the moral high ground?
...Trust in the Obama-era directorships of the Justice Department, FBI, and, indeed, the federal courts themselves are now horses that have long ago left the proverbial judicial barn.
...The public is sorry, but once bitten, twice shy.
The Humpty Dumpty federal FISA court process and the FBI credibility shattered in 2016 will not so easily be reconfigured.
...This growing loss of confidence in a compromised justice and investigatory elite is a symptom of a larger failure of our so-called best and brightest, whether in the media, government or the university.
We need to return to an older American idea that where we went to school, who wrote us recommendations, what titles we self-reference, and which grandees we know, mean little in comparison to what we actually do each day.
Self-righteousness and self-referencing become fatal when combined with incompetence and malfeasance.
James Comey is our touchstone to a morally confused age."

Democrats Release Tax Hike Plan:

Image result for free clip art Higher taxes"This week, Congressional Democrats released a detailed tax hike plan that they promised to implement if given majority control of the House and Senate after the 2018 midterm elections. So much for the crocodile tears about the deficit--Democrats want to raise taxes not to reduce the debt, but rather to spend that tax hike money on boondoggle projects.

As you might expect, hold onto your wallets. Here are the details:"

Farrell and Department of Public Health Director Barbara Garcia said on Monday that the city would allocate $750,000 to hire the new employees through a contract with the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.
“People are, quite frankly, fed up with the conditions of our streets, and so am I,” Farrell said, speaking at a news conference assembled in an alley at the corner of Natoma and Russ streets.
“The status quo on our streets today is simply unacceptable, and we’re not going to stand for it,” he said..."

"The New York Times agrees that "people with cancer and other terminal conditions who experience excruciating pain" should have access to opioid analgesics, albeit as "a last resort."
But the paper's editorial board seems to think that other patients—people with gunshot wounds or broken bones, people recovering from surgery, people who are not on the verge of death but have chronic conditions that cause severe pain—should take Attorney General Jeff Sessions' advice to "take some aspirin" and "tough it out."...

Chicago Is Trying to Pay Down Its Debt by Impounding Innocent People’s Cars - Reason.com
"On June 21, 2016, Chicago police pulled Spencer Byrd over for a broken turn signal.
Byrd says his signal wasn't broken, but that detail would soon be the least of his worries.
Ever since, Byrd has been trapped in one of the city's most confusing bureaucratic mazes, deprived of his car and his ability to work.
He now owes the city thousands of dollars for the pleasure.
Byrd, 50, lives in Harvey, Illinois, a corrupt, crime-ridden town south of Chicago where more than 35 percent of the populace lives below the poverty line.
...Byrd had run afoul of Chicago's aggressive vehicle impound program, which seizes cars and fines owners thousands of dollars for dozens of different offenses.
The program impounds cars when the owner beats a criminal case or isn't charged with a crime in the first place.
...In total, Chicago fined motorists more than $17 million between March 2017 and March of this year for 31 different types of offenses, ranging from DUI to having illegal fireworks in a car to playing music too loud, according to data from the Chicago Administrative Hearings Department.
About $10 million of those fines were for driving on a suspended license, and more than $3 million were for drug offenses like the one that resulted in the impoundment of Byrd's car.

Climate change is ‘not as bad as we thought’ say scientists | UK | News | Express.co.uk
"CLIMATE change is likely to be markedly less severe than forecast, a study claimed yesterday.

It predicted that the impact could be up to 45 per cent less intense than is widely accepted.
...It is based on analysing the warming effect of greenhouse gases and other drivers of climate change, from the mid 19th century until 2016.
It forecast that future warming will be between 30 per cent and 45 per cent lower than suggested by simulations carried out by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel one Climate Change."

Image result for immigrants living in households on food stamps"A recent report by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) reveals that the rising level of education among new immigrants in the U.S. has done very little to relieve increasing poverty levels for new arrivals.
The report indicates that in 2017 the number of new immigrants living in households on food stamps grew from 4%in 2007 to 13%t in 2017 -- three times more than a decade before.
...Additionally, the percentage of new immigrants on Medicaid grew from 6% in 2007 to 17% in 2017 -- an increase of 11 percentage points.
Though the percentage of Americans on Medicaid also saw a slight increase of 9%, the study showed that new immigrants are two times more likely to live in poverty than those born in the U.S, regardless of increased education levels among new arrivals..."
