How Climate Change Exacerbates Gender Inequality Across the Globe | Time
"Among the lesser studied effects of climate change are the social and economic impacts on women.
Nitya Rao, professor of gender and development at University of East Anglia has been studying gender and development for decades; with the recent attention on the profound impact that global temperature changes are having on local and national economies, she decided to analyze the impact of climate change on women specifically.
...“What we found is that climate change and environmental stress are common factors that intensify pre-existing disadvantages or gender and developmental inequalities,” she says..."

Roll Call - Covering Capitol Hill Since 1955
"Jim Jones and his U.S.-founded cult is remembered for the horrific events of November 1978, when more than 900 of his mostly American followers died of murder or suicide in northwestern Guyana; also killed was investigating U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan of California, slain on Jones's orders.
A congressional investigation concluded in 1979 that the State Department had been "lax."
But this Roll Call series and podcast take a fresh look at the 30,000-page record of that investigation - some of it only recently declassified - to paint a far more damning portrait of the government's efforts before the tragedy.

Among Roll Call's findings:
- Family concerns were dismissed: Cables show that relatives of at least 48 members of Jones's Peoples Temple reached out to the State Department over more than a year, worried about loved ones' well-being and asking for help. The cases included credible examples of the temple restricting members' communications with outsiders and preventing them from leaving the Jonestown settlementy. The records detail the extent to which diplomats minimized and sometimes dismissed these concerns.
- Temple defectors were also largely ignored...

Hayward: Give Thanks for Your Freedom:
Protest movements are sweeping the world, from Hong Kong to Iraq. Protesters in each country are aware of the other movements and frequently give them shout-outs or adopt their tactics.
The fate of all these movements is uncertain, but they share a more unambiguous commitment to sovereignty than most global protest stories of the past few decades, and perhaps an understanding that national and cultural identity are vital weapons against authoritarian hegemonic powers. Smaller governments may not guarantee freedom and human rights, but big ones almost guarantee their absence.

Renaming climate change: Can a new name finally make us take action? | AdAge
"As a professional namer, I create names for companies, products and services.
After the global climate strike this past September, I found myself thinking about the terms “climate change” and “global warming.”
Are these scientific terms too neutral?
Do they do enough to grab attention and inspire people to take action?
...This leads me to wonder: Is there a better way to convey the urgency of the situation, while also encouraging folks to take action?
Could the tools of branding and brand naming create a more resonant, powerful name?
...The brand needs to reach an audience that isn’t trained in scientific terms.
We need these folks to understand the severity of what’s happening to their planet and inspire them to make more eco-friendly life choices and pro-climate choices at the ballot box...

Recycling creates more pollution than it is supposed to alleviate - Ice Age Now
"I lived in Germany in the early 90’s.
A newspaper article at the time stated that the German govt had conducted a long, large, thorough study about the benefits of recycling, something they were world leaders in.
(Bottle collection points in every neighborhood, separated garbage etc.)
They came to a disturbing conclusion:
• first, that the recycling processes created more pollution than it was supposed to alleviate;
• second, that they would continue the same recycling protocols anyway because they make people feel better (virtue signalling high!).
...If only people would stop being sidetracked by impossible monsters to slay (like ‘global climate change’) and instead deal with what can be addressed, like no end of pollution caused by poor disposal methods.
Tangentially there are big issues like agricultural pollution from pesticides and antibiotics, but really these are disposal problems too..."

"Esquire magazine's Jack Holmes has the blues.
Orange Man is treating the press as though they are unimportant.
Considering they didn't stop his nomination, didn't stop his election, didn't get him indicted for Russiagate, and won't get him impeached, I would say he is right.
They are the wind beneath his wingtips.
Holmes penned a 4,300-word thumb-sucker, "Chopper Talk: Where the White House Press Corps Goes to Get Ritually Abused by Donald Trump. In a world without press briefings, reporters are forced to ask the world's most powerful man questions over the roar of a helicopter."
The press did this to themselves.
Reporters know it.
They had a good thing going with the daily press briefings.
Cable news got big ratings.
Reporters had a shot at being the next Sam Donaldson.
Then the press got too big for its britches.
Instead of reining in Jim Acosta, it sided with him in a lawsuit.
The departure of Sarah Sanders as press secretary opened the door for President Donald John Trump to slam the door on the daily press conferences.
Instead, the president holds impromptu briefings.
He answers their questions but does not allow them to preen for the cameras.
Let the crying begin..."

Charlie Kirk: Harder Line Immigration Policies Necessary to Save America | Breitbart:
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk told Breitbart News that “huge reforms need to happen” with hard line policies regarding both legal and illegal immigration “if we’re serious about saving this country.” Kirk spoke to host Alex Marlow in a Wednesday interview on SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily.
“The reporting that Breitbart has been doing so consistently for the last, seven, eight, ten years on the cartels, I think helped President Trump come to this conclusion,” said Kirk of President Trump’s recent announcement that he would designate Mexican drug cartels as terror organizations.
