GM Crops Like Golden Rice Will Save the Lives of Hundreds of Thousands of Children - Quillette

GM Crops Like Golden Rice Will Save the Lives of Hundreds of Thousands of Children - Quillette
"Any day now, the government of Bangladesh may become the first country to approve the growing of a variety of yellow rice by farmers known as Golden Rice.
If so, this would be a momentous victory in a long and exhausting battle fought by scientists and humanitarians to tackle a huge human health problem—a group that’s faced a great deal of opposition by misguided critics of genetically modified foods.
Golden Rice, by contrast, was produced in the 1990s by carefully inserting just two naturally occurring genes known to be safe—from maize and from a common soil bacterium—into a rice plant, disturbing no other genes.
It is quite literally golden: its yellow color indicates that it has beta carotene in it, the precursor of vitamin A.
It was developed as a humanitarian, non-profit project in an attempt to prevent somewhere between 200,000 and 700,000 people, many of them children, dying prematurely every year in poor countries because of vitamin A deficiency.
(Vitamin A deficiency causes children to go blind and lose immune function.)
Yet the rice has been ferociously opposed by opponents of GM foods and, partly as a result, has been tied up in red tape for 20 years, preventing it from being grown.
One study in 2008 calculated that in India alone 1.38 million person-years of healthy life had been lost for every year the crop has been delayed..."

Why the elites really hate Trump - American Thinker

Why the elites really hate Trump - American Thinker
"...Donald Trump is a salesman.
What he sells is himself and the Trump brand.
Bill Gates made his money with computer software, so he might not be too concerned with how people view the name Gates.
Donald Trump made his money in hotels and resorts, where it's important to have a name like Hilton as opposed to a name like Motel 6.
...Donald Trump is a modern-day P.T. Barnum.
...The character that Donald Trump has become is loathed by a large portion of society to a degree that many of us find hard to understand.
Nobody hates anyone this much unless it is personal, and the hatred of President Trump by the elite is very personal...

  • The elite pretend to be compassionate, but they hated people in fly-over country for years before the people in fly-over country finally started to hate them back.
  • The elite believe themselves to be brilliant, but they turned world production over to a brutal regime in China, creating not only a ruthless superpower, but also an unsustainable world economy where we keep printing and borrowing money to buy goods from the Chinese plantation factories.
  • The elite believe themselves to be honest, but they cannot see their own corruption, or the corruption of their elite friends, and they cannot see the reasonableness of asking for that corruption to be investigated, as in the case of Hunter Biden.

Donald Trump is an intelligent, compassionate though sometimes ruthless businessman who took on a persona to build his business.
After our elite ran the country into the ground by their corruption and incompetence, it was Donald Trump who led the revolt against them.
Then Donald Trump came into Washington still having the persona he used to build his business, still playing a caricature of society's elite.
This is divine intervention.
When Hollywood actors, or the media and political elite, look at Donald Trump, they see themselves.
They may not realize they see themselves, but they do.
But unlike President Trump, the elite truly are egomaniacs, and they are blowhards, and they are buffoons.
This is why they hate President Trump so much."

Both books, as you say, are essential to our understanding of what has turned out to be the most serious political scandal in the history of the American Republic...because the nature of the scandal—the weaponization of our intelligence community in order to overturn a Presidential election—is at once so grievous and so misreported by the organs of a co-opted Fourth Estate that the usual niceties about declaring an interest pale before the egregious reality of this attempted coup.
Again, I am not being hyperbolic in deploying the phrase “attempted coup.”
What we have seen in the response to both books is a perfect storm of unspoken media collusion to bury the books in order to preserve The Narrative..."

The Cobra Effect: Lessons in Unintended Consequences - Foundation for Economic Education

The Cobra Effect: Lessons in Unintended Consequences - Foundation for Economic Education:
  • Human beings react to every rule, regulation, and order governments impose, and their reactions result in outcomes that can be quite different than the outcomes lawmakers intended.
"Every human decision brings with it unintended consequences.
...Other times unintended consequences have far-reaching, dramatic effects.
The US health care system is a case in point.
It emerged in its present form in no small part because of two governmental decisions.
First, wage and price controls during World War II caused employers to add health insurance as an employee benefit.
Why?
The law prohibited employers from raising wages, so to attract workers, they offered to provide health insurance.
Then, in 1951, Congress declared that employer-provided health insurance benefits would not count as taxable income.
This made it cheaper for employees to take raises in the form of increased tax-free insurance benefits rather than in the form of increased taxable wages.
Unintended consequences happen so often that economists call them “Cobra Problems,” after one of the most interesting examples..."

Societal suicide-----Portland considers "mandatory rest spaces" for the homeless on private property

Portland considers "mandatory rest spaces" for the homeless on private property
"Portland, Oregon, like many cities on the left coast, is struggling with a growing homelessness crisis.
But what can they do about it?
One idea that’s now being floated is to change the building codes so that all new structures (including private property, not just government buildings) include spaces for people to “rest” and “feel welcome and safe.”
This understandably has prospective property owners concerned, since the wording is all quite vague and suggests that they will be forced to allow the homeless to camp in and around their buildings..."

  • The economy booms, the construction cranes jam the skylines while the homeless set up camp on the sidewalks and bathe in the public fountains
"...For all the electronic chatter about the comeback of Detroit, it is hard to see it here at the Social Security office, miles from the refurbished office towers of downtown...
Out here in the real Detroit, where 650,000 of the poorest people in America live, no one seems to blame a guy for pulling the invisible-dog hustle.
Out here in the other Detroit, the glass is perpetually nearly half-empty: nearly half the children live in poverty; average household income is nearly half that of the United States in general; nearly half the adults are functionally illiterate and consequently nearly half the adult population are not only unemployed, but they’re not even looking for a job.
...Today, the budget is balanced, condominiums are being built and thousands of people have moved downtown to live and work.
Development is booming, much of it with substantial public subsides.
It’s welfare for the rich..."
