"Combating hate crimes is a worthy endeavor.
But the new campaign announced by Attorney General Dana Nessel has the real potential to morph into thought policing.
Nessel, in partnership with Agustin Arbulu, director of the Michigan Department of Civil rights, say they will create a process to document incidents of hate and bias that don't rise to the level of criminal or civil infractions.
That could translate to speech or expressions of opinion that some may find offensive, but are protected by the First Amendment.
Bias is protected by the Constitution until it infringes on the rights and freedoms of others, and hate is often in the eye of the beholder..."

They need you now, but when they don’t, they’ll cast you out like a leper. See, their morals, their code, it’s a bad joke, to be dropped at the first sign of trouble. They’re only as good as the world allows them to be. I’ll show you, when the chips are down, these civilized people? They’ll eat each other.
He might as well have been talking about Silicon Valley.
Twenty-eighteen was a bad year for the totalitarian titans of tech.
Faced with one scandal after another, the industry retreated behind a wall of lobbying money, hoping their bank accounts would shield them from their increasingly ugly image in the public eye as politically bigoted, misanthropic, overgrown children, incapable of following rules, norms, or even laws.
Twenty-nineteen doesn’t look to be much better.
...As a result, the industry is doing what any group of cornered predators does, and eating each other to try to stay alive.
Thus, a piece in Forbes magazine informs the reader that:
Microsoft, the industry’s journeyman of governmental warfare, is cleverly advocating regulation of a narrow slice of potentially creepy technology: facial recognition. Apple is pointing fingers, suggesting its data-privacy stance is holier than Facebook’s and Google’s. Facebook, in a preview of how the industry will battle its adversaries, has simultaneously called for some form of regulation while darkly warning of the unintended consequences of the wrong kind...
Probably the most encouraging development listed is Apple’s turn against Facebook and Google..."

Image result for +Vistria Martin Nesbitt"We're probably the first administration in modern history that hasn't had a major scandal in the White House," Obama himself said.
A new book puts the lie to that statement.
Never mind that the left-leaning big media basically ignored major scandals during the Obama years, ranging from the IRS targeting scandal and the VA's deadly waiting lists for veterans to Hillary Clinton's illegal use of an unsecured, hackable home-brew server for her official duties as secretary of state and the Fast and Furious gunwalking program.
...But now comes Peter Schweizer's new book, "Secret Empires: How Our Politicians Hide Corruption and Enrich Their Families and Friends," which shows that the Obama administration and its cronies were up to their necks in questionable business deals and may even have intentionally distorted public policy to accommodate their own profit-making.

Schweizer's book, based on extensive research, says that Obama acted to regulate certain industries in such a way that the regulations lowered the value of some of the companies, wrote Katelyn Caralle of the Washington Examiner.
These actions let two family friends to profit handsomely on deals through their own investment firm.

Anti-Semitism & socialism: Peas in a poison pod - WND

Anti-Semitism & socialism: Peas in a poison pod - WND:

Image result for flickr commons images Carl MarxIlhan Omar did not need to read Marx. The vile slurs she peddles have stalked Jews long before Marx dressed them up in an intellectually respectable costume of political-economy. A recent survey found anti-Semitism is rampant among Muslims. Tellingly, the most popular anti-Semitic myth in sub-Saharan Africa – Omar’s place of birth – is “Jews are more loyal to Israel than the country they live in.”
Ilhan Omar is a garden variety anti-Semite. Those who refuse to say so are being willfully ignorant. Her type is easily recognizable.
The biggest villains in the recent spectacle are not Omar and her cheerleading squad.
It’s the Democratic leaders who have let the party of Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy be hijacked by socialists and anti-Semites.
And it’s no accident the hijackers came on board together.

The Folly of Solar Energy | Power Line

The Folly of Solar Energy | Power Line
"The late January brownout in central Minnesota, during a time of Arctic cold, showed that reliance on “green” energy can be life-threatening.
Xcel Energy instructed customers to turn thermostats down to 60 degrees and refrain from using hot water.
See the source imageXcel went so far as to put some customers up in hotels.
Investigation of the brownout has been informative.
The principal problem, given that Minnesota has invested massively in wind energy, was that the wind wasn’t blowing.
But there was another problem, too, which came out in testimony before the state’s Public Utilities Commission by an Xcel official.
My colleague Isaac Orr explains:
During their testimony, Xcel Energy representatives stated that the company’s solar panels only produced 8 to 10 percent of their potential output because of snow cover.
Everyone understands, I suppose, that solar panels can’t produce electricity at night–which, coincidentally, is when we need to turn lights on.
It is less well recognized that in the North, solar panels are also more or less useless during the Winter. But, you may ask, can’t they be cleared off and thus made functional?
Xcel Energy posted a profit of $1.1 billion in 2017, and you’re telling me they can’t pay a high-schooler to scrape off their solar panels for a little extra cash?
***
To me, the fact Xcel didn’t bother to clear the snow off their solar panels suggests they didn’t think it was worth it, from a cost/benefit standpoint..."

Pelosi Calls For Illegal Immigrants To Have The Right To Vote

Pelosi Calls For Illegal Immigrants To Have The Right To Vote:
Image result for flickr commons images nancy pelosi
House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi has let the cat out of the bag and revealed exactly what it is Democrats want to do.
Republicans have long suspected that Democrats want illegal aliens to be able to come into the nation freely in order to rig elections for the Democrats.
The Democrat Party has long argued that Republicans were conspiracy theorists and that they were only concerned with the “humanitarian crisis.”
But as Pelosi gets older it becomes tougher for her to keep her secrets and a slip of the tongue may have revealed the not so hidden truth.

...What about the identity of the perp?
According to the  WaPo (using CrowdStrike, DOJ, and their usual hush-hush sources), the attack was executed by a Russian unit lead by Lieutenant Captai Nikolay Kozachek who allegedly crafted a malware called X-Agent and used it to get into the network and install keystroke loggers on several PCs.
This allowed them to see what the employees were typing and take images of the employees’ computer screens.
But if that was the case, then how did the DOJ learned all of this without the FBI ever evaluating the DNC/HRC computers?
And the enigma doesn’t stop there..."

MOTUS A.D.: Socialism Is The Cool New Liberalism

MOTUS A.D.: Socialism Is The Cool New Liberalism
It’s the natural progression of things: Millennials believe calling yourself a socialist is sexy.
Image result for socialism is sexy red shirt
Remember the way-cool Sixties when guys used to attend protests and rallies to get laid, because young women could not resist such caring, passionate, liberal guys? Now there’s an app for that. But as in the way of all flesh the guys have had to up the ante on their care, passion and liberalism - all the way to socialism:
Things have gotten so social with socialism that the young and restless now can consult a dating app called Red Yenta to find the fellow socialist of their dreams.  Creators Marissa Brostoff, 33, and Mindy Isser, 28, were concerned that socialist men were not dating socialist women, and described their new dating platform as a "communal service" to help filter through a potential date's political leanings.

...After 12-18 years of publicly funded brainwashing the Millennials and their follow-on generation have been  primed to embrace the utopian ideal of socialism.
"Coolheaded Obaman technocracy is out; strident left-wing moral clarity is in.  And while this atmospheric shift is felt most acutely among the left-literary crowd, it's also bled into the general discourse, such that Teen Vogue is constantly flacking against capitalism and one of the most devastating insults in certain corners of the internet is to call someone a neoliberal,"
..."These socialists insist they don't support repressive states like the Soviet Union or North Korea," The Post said, and instead "point to Scandinavian-style socialism in nations like Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden as 'true socialism.'  One problem: Those countries aren't socialist."
They tried it, but they don’t necessarily like it.

Now they’re fixing it.

How Government-Guaranteed Student Loans Killed the American Dream for Millions - Foundation for Economic Education:
  • When government-guaranteed checks keep rolling in, there's no incentive for colleges and universities to lower their prices. In fact, they do the opposite.
"In Basic Economics, Thomas Sowell wrote that prices are what tie together the vast network of economic activity among people who are too vastly scattered to know each other.

An object’s value in the free market is not how much it costs to produce, but rather how much a consumer is willing to pay for it.
...The Problem with Government-Backed Student Loans
... According to Forbes, the average price of tuition has increased eight times faster than wages since the 1980s.
In 2018, the Federal Reserve estimated that there is currently $1.5 trillion in unpaid student debt.
...The government’s backing of student loans has caused the price of higher education to artificially rise; the demand would not be so high if college were not a financially viable option for some.
Young people have been led to believe that a diploma is the ticket to the American dream, but that’s not the case for many Americans.
...Nor can student loans be discharged by filing for bankruptcy..."

How nerds smothered American culture | Spectator USA

How nerds smothered American culture | Spectator USA:
  • It is a morbid sign for a democracy when the electorate chooses superheroes to do its bidding, rather than politicians
"...‘It used to be that cool people looked down on nerds. Now I know a lot of cool people who pretend to be nerds.’
Alonso was right.
The nerds have taken over Hollywood, America and the world.
...President Obama praised the trend:
‘I think America’s a nerdier country than it used to be when I was a kid – and that’s a good thing!’
Obama, with typical glibness, had forgotten a crucial general point about nerds: they are not happy people.
There were good reasons why there was a stigma around being a nerd; those who loved stories about dragons and superheroes into adulthood tended to be nebbish, poorly-tailored and sexually inadequate.
They needed to escape into fantasy worlds because the real world was brutal, cruel and completely uninterested in playing tabletop wargames.
The wholesale nerdification of America began when the certainties and comforts of the 1990s gave way to the pessimism and paranoia of the post-9/11 world.
...The bleak worldview of the traditional nerd – quietly seething, victimized, powerless, friendless, obsessed and solaced by trivia, disenchanted with the authorities and institutions that fail to protect them from predatory bullies – has become the worldview of many Americans.
...If many people in a society feel like outsiders and the major mass culture tells them loudly and constantly that this is a noble thing to be, then what kind of politics will you have?..."

Levin explained that in fact, the resolution does the opposite, though the New York Times and Washington Post have already scorned the Republicans who voted against it.
“This resolution, cobbled together by the Democrat party leadership — which includes Jewish Americans — did not condemn Omar, Tlaib, Ocasio-Cortez. It did not condemn anti-Semitism qua anti-Semitism. You know what it condemned? The American people. It condemned the American people as an anti-Semitic people, which we are not,” he said. “As a racist people, which we are not. As a homophobic people, which we are not. And down the list.”

RECYCLING IS STILL GARBAGE: Fiscal realities are finally persuading towns to junk their recycling…

Instapundit  Blog Archive  RECYCLING IS STILL GARBAGE
"RECYCLING IS STILL GARBAGE: Fiscal realities are finally persuading towns to junk their recycling programs, as the Atlantic reports sorrowfully
Alana Semuels nicely analyzes the fatal economic flaws of recycling but ends with a bit of green sermonizing:
Americans are going to have to come to terms with a new reality: All those toothpaste tubes and shopping bags and water bottles that didn’t exist 50 years ago need to go somewhere, and creating this much waste has a price we haven’t had to pay so far.
See the source imageActually, we’ve already paid the price by building landfills with with expensive liners and other environmental safeguards.
And we’ve paid a lot more for recycling programs that were never necessary.
Yes, those water bottles do have to go somewhere — and there’s plenty of room for them right back where they came from, in the ground.
Why are greens horrified by the prospect of a plastic bottle made from petroleum being buried in a landfill?
The plastic poses less of an underground threat  than the petroleum did.
It’s much better environmentally (and cheaper) to put plastic bottles in a local landfill instead of shipping them  off for recycling to Asia (the only place with any market for them), because some of those bottles end up in rivers that send the plastic waste into the Pacific Ocean.
Eric Boehm at Reason has a much savvier take on the scrapped recycling programs:
Like most other civic issues, recycling programs should be judged by their costs and benefits. That means an honest assessment of the costs and benefits, one that leaves out the social signaling of environmentalism and the feel-good effects of putting an empty Coke bottle in a plastic bin that’s painted blue instead of black. There is no need to recycle all the things all the time, and the market seems to be sending towns and cities a powerful signal about the benefits of calling trash, trash.
