"The crisis at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants continues.
Amazingly, a 40-year-old power plant built to withstand a 7.9 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale shut down automatically as designed when the Earth began shaking.

In fact, it stood up to an earthquake that released more than 40 times the amount of energy the plant was designed to survive.
At the moment it appears that the 33-foot tsunami that knocked out its backup diesel generators for its coolant pumps was the plant's undoing."

Gov. Rick Snyder says pensions should never have been tax exempt in Michigan

Gov. Rick Snyder says pensions should never have been tax exempt in Michigan MLive.com
"Gov. Rick Snyder today said elected officials made a mistake back in 1994 when they exempted private sources of retirement income, including pensions, from the state income tax.

Until then, only public pensions had been exempt from tax.
At the time, Gov. John Engler told lawmakers either to start taxing public pensions, including their own, or begin exempting private pensions from tax.

Lawmakers in both parties, of course, chose the latter, allowing joint filers to exclude up to $60,000 in private pension from tax.
Adjusted for inflation because the law also does that, the exemption is now up to $90,240."

The issue is legitimate for discussion unless public employee pensions are exempt.
Protecting the big union pensioners from paying their fair share and then taxing those private pensions to pay for the non-taxed unions members is simply an invitation for revolution!

"The government decides to try to increase the middle class by subsidizing things that middle class people have:

If middle-class people go to college and own homes, then surely if more people go to college and own homes, we’ll have more middle-class people.

But homeownership and college aren’t causes of middle-class status, they’re markers for possessing the kinds of traits — self-discipline, the ability to defer gratification, etc. — that let you enter, and stay, in the middle class.

Subsidizing the markers doesn’t produce the traits; if anything, it undermines them."

The policemen who were there, and who were standing in close proximity to these events as they unfolded, did nothing to assist those collecting the petitions as they were being destroyed, despite such an action being a Felony under Wisconsin law.
Police also did nothing to clear the walk way for citizens that wanted to sign the petitions.

Into the mind of liberal self delusion

Letters: Seek the real truth about Wisconsin MLive.com
Teachers and other public employees have been staging huge protests in the Wisconsin capital in opposition to Gov. Scott Walker’s attempts to take away the right of collective bargaining.
On the comics page, Mallard Fillmore is outraged.

He has nothing but contempt for these protesters.

They are a bunch of vicious, greedy, union bullies carrying signs showing the governor in the crosshairs, and waving posters that say, “Wanted: Walker, DEAD or alive!”
But could it be that those signs were planted by conservative union-haters in order to make the real protesters look bad?
It seemed like a good idea to Mark Williams, a conservative radio personality.
He suggested to his listeners that they infiltrate the protests at the Madison capital wearing SEIU T-shirts. (SEIU stands for Service Employees International Union.)
They should carry signs under their shirts that say rude things like “Screw the taxpayer” and “You OWE me,” and they should pull them out for the cameras.
“Timing is important,” Williams explains, “because they will take them away from us.”
He ends his online post with this optimistic note: “Even if it becomes known that we are plants, the quotes and pictures will linger as de facto truth.”
The real protesters seemed like a mannerly bunch.
My guess is that the signs Mallard Fillmore screeches about were, indeed, plants, but so what?
All it takes is a few Mallard Fillmores to establish the phony signs as “de facto truths.”
How tawdry.

Impounding cars of unlicensed drivers: LAPD limits impounding of cars at sobriety checkpoints

Impounding cars of unlicensed drivers: LAPD limits impounding of cars at sobriety checkpoints - latimes.com
"Under criticism that it was unfairly targeting undocumented immigrants, the Los Angeles Police Department on Friday announced changes to its rules for impounding cars of unlicensed drivers at sobriety checkpoints.

Previously, LAPD officers at such checkpoints followed stringent protocols that called for them to impound a car whenever the driver was found not to have a valid license, regardless of whether the driver had been drinking.

Those rules have drawn the ire of immigration advocacy groups that said they disproportionately targeted undocumented immigrants, who are not able to obtain licenses legally in nearly all U.S. states.
Once a vehicle is impounded, law enforcement agencies often require it to remain locked up for at least a month and charge the owner hefty fees to release it.

The new LAPD guidelines soften the department's stance somewhat.
Police will be required to make an attempt to contact the registered owner of the stopped vehicle.
If the owner is a licensed driver and can respond to the checkpoint in 'a reasonable period of time,' the officers will release the car to him or her.
If the owner is unlicensed, officers will permit another person who is a licensed driver to take the car."

THIS IS INSANE!

Who Speaks for the American Worker? NetRight Daily
"I do not purport to speak for the working American, only for myself and maybe the few with whom I share most weekdays.

First of all, we don’t think of ourselves as units of a collective.

Each of us is seeking our own path in life, and while the economic collapse has left us all cautious and unsure, we carry on with the hope that, through initiative and hard work, we can make our lives better."

The Muslim wall of resistance

EDITORIAL: The Muslim wall of resistance - Washington Times
"Opponents of New York Republican Rep. Peter King’s hearings on domestic Muslim extremism have tried to make the controversy into a civil rights battle.
The more the left obfuscates the issue, the more dangerous the threat becomes."

Incredible!
The democrat party has become the "peace in our time" party.

Even in our own country.

Doctors: Husband told Giffords she was shot

Doctors: Husband told Giffords she was shot - Washington Times
“I’m very happy to report that she’s making leaps and bounds in terms of neurological recovery,” said Dr. Dong Kim, a neuroscientist.
“She’s doing spectacularly well.”

It's great that Giffords is doing well but she's obviously not up to serving those who elected her to the congress.
And with the Arizona primary less than a year away it would seem that she will be unable to campaign for her seat.

I'm getting a "duh" feeling that the media is overplaying her recovery in an attempt to legitimize her running again.
Even though it is likely she is not up to a political race or possibly the duties of a congresswoman.

Oh, did I mention she's a democrat.......

My prediction back then was that it will get nowhere near the media coverage that was given to Pat Robertson (White House responds to Pat Roberts faster than to undiebomber that tried to blow up airplane over Detroit) when he blamed Haiti's pact with the devil for its problems.
Wanna know what?
I was right!

The only reason the phrase "sole-source" was created was to mask its true meaning, NO-BID.

"The Pledge of Allegiance is being recited in Spanish each week at Reeths-Puffer Intermediate School, a practice that is being questioned by at least one teacher.

Students who began Spanish classes at the school this year recited the Pledge in Spanish twice last week, and will continue to do so once a week, said Superintendent Steve Edwards.
The fifth- and sixth-graders say the Pledge in unison daily, led by a student on the school intercom system."

"The retired city administrator of Vernon, Calif., pulls down a pension of $43,320.53 a month - or close to $520,000 a year - through the underfunded California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), which covers about half of all government workers in the state and is the nation's largest public pension administrator.

Malkenhorst receives that princely stipend by virtue of having held six four-day-a-week jobs at the same time in Vernon, a speck of an industrial town just south of Los Angeles.
He was Vernon's city manager, city clerk, finance director, treasurer, redevelopment agency secretary and director of light and power."

Bill would freeze teacher pay between contracts

Bill would freeze teacher pay between contracts MLive.com
"Republicans in the Michigan House have approved a bill that would freeze pay and benefits for union-represented public school teachers working under expired contracts.
The bill that passed by a 63-47 vote Thursday goes to the Republican-led Senate.
The bill calls for public employers to provide no more than current pay and benefits after the expiration date of a collective bargaining agreement until a new contract is in place.
It would eliminate so-called step increases sometimes paid by school districts regardless of whether a union contract is in place.
Employees would have to pay for increased costs of health insurance or other benefits.

Democrats say the proposed changes are unconstitutional and would eliminate employers' incentive to bargain new contracts.
Republicans say the changes would give unions more incentive to bargain."
