National planning Cyprus-style solution for New Zealand

National planning Cyprus-style solution for New Zealand | Scoop News:
"The National Government are pushing a Cyprus-style solution to bank failure in New Zealand which will see small depositors lose some of their savings to fund big bank bailouts, the Green Party said today.
Open Bank Resolution (OBR) is Finance Minister Bill English’s favoured option dealing with a major bank failure.
If a bank fails under OBR, all depositors will have their savings reduced overnight to fund the bank’s bail out.

The Disappearing Volume of the Stock Market

Captain Capitalism: The Disappearing Volume of the Stock Market:
But ask yourself a question.
"How great of a reason is THE LACK OF VOLATILITY for a stock market rally?"
It once again is another desperate excuse, a desperate reason for stock markets to rally that once again ignores the only two things that should drive a true stock market rally -
1.  Increased profits
2.  Increased dividends
The fact volume is tanking, leaving a higher percentage of trading in essentially connected firms' hands, AND there has not been the increase in profits to bring the P/E of investments down to a sane level, means this is a rally only for the connected.
You might as well be a man trying to rationalize driving a VW Cabriolet by citing its fuel efficiency."

Europe’s Cyprus blunder | AEIdeas:
"European policymakers work in strange and mysterious ways.
Over the past year, they bent many rules and threw literally hundreds of billions of Euros at Greece to prevent that country from exiting the Euro.
They did so for fear that a Greek exit might cause contagion to other countries in the European periphery. And then over this last weekend, they chose to spook financial markets and risk the very contagion that they sought to avoid in the Greek case, by demanding that as part of its bailout package Cyprus imposes a tax on bank deposits."

"required a twice-yearly report from every SWAT team in Michigan.
They would need to list the location of each raid, the legal reason for it, the details of what happened, whether shots were fired, what was seized and who was arrested. A similar law in Maryland revealed that 4.5 homes per day were being raided.
McMillin introduced the bill following the death of a 7-year old Detroit girl who was killed during a Detroit police SWAT raid on her home.
The only weapon fired was from the gun of one of the officers, who claimed (falsely) that the girl’s aunt reached for his weapon.
Yet his only shot struck the little girl in the neck.
The bill received only two co-sponsors, both Detroit Democrats.
It never got out of committee, allegedly due to strong resistance from law enforcement."

Ferry service fights that sinking feeling

Ferry service fights that sinking feeling | Matier And Ross | an SFGate.com blog:
"The much-heralded ferry service between Oakland and South San Francisco — launched just nine months ago at a cost to taxpayers of more than $42 million — is taking on water fast.
The service, which operates seven trips each weekday, carried an average of just 131 total riders a day in the last week of February.
That’s less than a third of the ridership that officials were counting on during the ferries’ first year on the bay.
And yet, rather than retrenching, the ferry operators have big plans for expansion.
You can find out about those here."

White House Announces Easter Egg Roll May Be Cancelled, After Labeling Concerns Ridiculous Last Week

White House Announces Easter Egg Roll May Be Cancelled, After Labeling Concerns Ridiculous Last Week - By Andrew Johnson - The Corner - National Review Online: "
Last Friday, White House press secretary Jay Carney lashed out at a Fox News anchor for asking whether the White House’s annual Easter Egg Roll might go the way of its cancelled tours.
Carney told Jenna Lee that the event wasn’t at risk:
“Well actually, Jenna, again, if you did a little reporting . . . it’s paid for by the sale of those eggs that come out, as well as from donations on the outside, so it’s a totally different budget.
These are apples and oranges.”
But now the White House is warning that this year’s egg roll may be nixed by the sequester as well.
According to Politico, Capitol Hill offices received an e-mail today with tickets to the event that mentioned it could be cancelled “due to funding uncertainty surrounding the Executive Office of the President and other federal agencies.”

There are obviously cases where SWAT teams are sent after clearly dangerous and violent criminals that need to spend many years in a cage.
But these home invasions are too often used against non-violent drug offenders, sometimes in situations - such as the Torres matter - where there isn’t even a clear crime being committed.
Most alarmingly, they can also happen when bad information and mistakes send cops to the wrong doors."

Opposition To Soda Ban Sad Proof That Americans Still Fight For What They Believe In | The Onion

Opposition To Soda Ban Sad Proof That Americans Still Fight For What They Believe In | The Onion - America's Finest News Source
Yes, It's The Onion, but is sure rings true, don't it?
NEW YORK—The mounting opposition to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposal to prohibit the sale of large-size soft drinks served as sad and sobering proof that Americans are still willing to fight for the causes they believe in, sources confirmed Wednesday. “While many argue that people in this country lack the passion and general informedness to meaningfully participate in matters of public policy, the fierce outcry against the soda ban provides depressing evidence that this is not entirely true,” said New York University sociologist Dr. Marvin Schafer, pointing to the recent flux of pathetic petitions, public demonstrations, and fervent calls to the mayor’s office, all of which have been aimed at maintaining unimpeded access to soda and other sweetened beverages larger than 16 ounces. “This embarrassingly powerful demonstration of democracy shows that, when their backs are against the wall, Americans are unfortunately still very willing to band together and stand up for what they believe in most. Specifically, soda.” At press time, an online petition demanding the White House make clear its position on the use of combat drone strikes against American citizens had garnered 14 signatures.

Ethanol Surplus May Lift Gas Prices

Ethanol Surplus May Lift Gas Prices:
"Reasons for the ethanol surplus are even more broadly in dispute, between producers and the oil companies. Gas companies are required under federal law to blend a certain number of gallons of ethanol into the fuel.
But refiners argue that some cannot reach that requirement because they are nearing or at the so-called blend wall, the maximum percentage of ethanol in gasoline that most gas stations can handle, 10 percent.
They also note that is the maximum level recommended by auto manufacturers for most cars.
Refiners blame Congress, arguing that the ethanol quota was set at a time when gasoline demand was expected to rise steadily.
Instead, demand has declined, and refiners, obligated to blend more ethanol than they can actually use, have resorted to buying a lot of ethanol credits, known as renewable identification numbers (or RINs), to meet the mandated levels."

Intellectuals and Race: Part II - Thomas Sowell - Page 2:
"Why then do statistical differences between blacks and whites set off such dogmatic assertions -- and "disparate impact" lawsuits -- when it is common for different groups to meet employment or other standards to different degrees?
One reason is that "disparate impact" lawsuits require nothing more than statistical differences to lead to verdicts, or out of court settlements, in the millions of dollars.
And the reason that is so is that so many people have bought the unsubstantiated assumption that there is something strange and sinister when different peoples have different achievements.
Centuries of recorded history say otherwise.
But who cares about history anymore?
Certainly not as much as they care about the millions of dollars available from "disparate impact" lawsuits."

Pathology of race on full-blown display during Detroit emergency manager announcement

Matthew Davis: Pathology of race on full-blown display during Detroit emergency manager announcement | MLive.com:

Mostly, though, and especially in terms of public policy, racial pathology appeals only to the most vile in humanity.
That pathology was on full-blown display Thursday when Gov. Rick Snyder named Kevyn Orr -- a highly respected bankruptcy attorney -- as the city's emergency financial manager.
Outside the press conference, deeply pathological racists like Rev. Charles Williams II (of Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network) called Orr, who is black, an "Uncle Tom."
Tom Barrow, another protester, said the state's financial manager law is "Jim Crowesque."
Said the Rev. Horrace Sheffield: "This is colonialism in its neo-negro form."
There are only two possible explanations for such despicable behavior, the likes of which is every bit as contemptible as their contemporaries in the Ku Klux Klan.
First, that Sharpton's organization is using race to gain some pecuniary advantage from Detroit's misery.
This practice is also known as "race hustling," and Sharpton is an expert at raising some claim of racism to force the alleged racist to hire him or some crony to provide racial sensitivity training or some other meaningless drivel.
Thus, the pathology takes on a form of venality.
It may never be prosecuted as extortion, but it's a practice that -- if this county were ever serious about improving race relations -- should be condemned, or at least shunned, by mainstream opinion leaders who allow Sharpton to appear on their shows.

An Important Day for Detroit

An Important Day for Detroit | Via Meadia
"The report follows Detroit’s descent from one of America’s greatest cities into a Third World-style wasteland of incompetence and corruption where streetlights are dark, police don’t respond to calls, and the poor are left to fend for themselves.
The process of ruin took decades and is the work of more than one generation of a degenerate political class. But Kwame Kilpatrick’s story is a reminder that the hyenas are still picking at what little is left of the city’s corpse."

Why do Hollywood celebrities hate fracking?

Why do Hollywood celebrities hate fracking? | Fox News
"Hollywood gave an Oscar to “Gasland,” a documentary that suggests fracking will shove gas into some people’s drinking water, so the water will burn.
It’s true that some water contains so much natural gas that you can light it.
But another documentary, “FrackNation,” shows that gas got into plumbing long before fracking came.
There’s gas in the earth.
That’s why it’s called “natural gas.”
Some gets into well water.
Environmental officials investigated the flames shown in “Gasland” and concluded that the pollution had nothing to do with fracking."

The Right to Vote depends on Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act

Liberal Myth of the Week» Blog Archive » The Right to Vote depends on Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act:

What is being challenged is the arbitrary and antiquated Section 5 pre-clearance system which was supposed to be temporary when it was first passed in 1965. Under this system, the jurisdictions mentioned above must seek permission from the Attorney General himself, or a three-judge federal district court panel, before implementing any voting-related changes. For example, if Shelby County wants to change the location of a polling place because an elementary school is temporarily under construction, they have to get permission from the federal government first.
Never mind that the Section 5-covered state of Mississippi has higher African-American voter turnout than Massachusetts. Or that the Bronx is required to get pre-clearance under Section 5 while neighboring Queens is not. None of this helps protect any minorities right to vote.
Justice Anthony Kennedy may side with the more conservative members of the Supreme Court and vote down Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, or he may side with the liberals and uphold it. Either way every minority in America will still have a constitutionally protected right to vote in 2014.

Muskegon city commissioners approve deal with cab company to restart senior transit program

Muskegon city commissioners approve deal with cab company to restart senior transit program | MLive.com
"Wakefield offered to provide seniors with one-way rides for $3.50 in the same geographic areas that the city provided for $3 one-way rides.
The city program was eliminated Dec. 31 for budget cutting reasons after city voters failed to approve two ballot proposals Nov. 6 that would have kept the city senior transit program funded.
The city would pay Wakefield $40,000 for a one-year contract to provide the special cab fare for city senior citizens. Port City and Yellow cabs provide service 365 days a year and 24 hours a day where the city program had limited days and hours of operation.
Muskegon used a similar public-private partnership to restore youth recreation programs when the city’s Leisure Services Department was eliminated several years ago as a budget cut."

Norton Shores city officials still considering new garbage pick up this year

Norton Shores city officials still considering new garbage pick up this year | MLive.com
"Bartoszek said residents voted for a $1.5 million, 20-year millage for street improvements in 2008 and the effort to reduce garbage truck traffic is just a larger part of reducing road damage.
"We have multiple garbage haulers running up and down our streets in a given week," Bartoszek said of the main five haulers that service residents.
"It makes our city looks trashy because there are always garbage cans out."
Bartoszek said some studies estimate road damage caused by one garbage truck equates to the wear and tear caused by 12,000 to 18,000 cars depending on the size of the truck.
Aside from curtailing road damage, maintaining a more picturesque town and saving residents money, city officials believe contracting refuse services will address safety concerns the trucks pose to motorists, pedestrians and school aged children."

The Hostess Shuffle: Feds put the ‘dough’ in this doughnut

The Hostess Shuffle: Feds put the ‘dough’ in this doughnut - Daily Inter Lake: Frank:
"This is where the devil starts to look a bit more like Jason in a hockey mask instead of a nice wholesome inviting Hostess Twinkie.
You see, according to the Department of Labor website, the Trade Adjustment Assistance program is actually money that Congress has allocated for “trade-affected workers who have lost their jobs as a result of increased imports or shifts in production out of the United States.”
But wait a minute!
Didn’t Hostess go out of business in a well-publicized blaze of glory because union workers refused to accept concessions that would have allowed the bakery to stay open?
Well, yeah, but in a brazenly Orwellian rewrite of history, the Department of Labor announced that “an investigation found that increased imports of baked products contributed importantly to the company’s sales declines and worker separations.”
“Importantly.”
That’s a nice vague word, isn’t it?"

NLRB Policies Help Unions, Not Workers

NLRB Policies Help Unions, Not Workers | NetRight Daily
"Consider the NLRB’s recent rulings against Prime Healthcare Services, a California-based hospital company that was forced to continue collecting union dues even after the expiration of its collective bargaining agreement.
That decision overturned a half-century of legal precedent.
Then there was the agency’s ruling against Kent Hospital — in which the board held employees were no longer permitted to opt out of paying the percentage of union dues spent on political activity.
Not only that, the same ruling removed language requiring unions to provide employees with an accounting of what they spend on political activity."
