Citizens for Fair Taxes announced the initiative Thursday in several cities, saying Michigan families are shouldering too much of the state's tax burden.
It would increase the state's corporate tax from 6 percent to 11 percent.
The coalition, which includes the Michigan Labor District Council, Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights and Operating Engineers, says the proposal would "recoup about $900 million" from past corporate tax cuts.
Opponents say the proposal is a jobs killer..."

"As critics of the major electric utilities have been saying all along, there is only a slim chance for a shortfall of electricity supplies in Michigan in 2016.
The Michigan Public Service Commission issued an order Tuesday that “an electric shortfall in 2016 is not as likely as once believed in the state’s Lower Peninsula.”
...However, the PSC said Michigan must continue working to ensure that adequate electric resources are available to meet demand beyond 2016.
The PSC noted the uncertainty exists because it is unknown what the impact will be of the federal Clean Power Plan, which calls for 30 percent reduction of greenhouse gases by 2030.
As a warning, the PSC said MISO’s 2015 survey, conducted in June, projects a 1,200 megawatt shortfall in zone 7, or Michigan, through 2017.
But the PSC felt there is no imminent danger because MISO’s entire 13-state region shows a 1,700 megawatt surplus during that period.
Still, the PCS cautions that MISO’s electricity survey indicates a potential shortfall in reserve capacity by 2020, if nothing is done to increase capacity or reduce electricity usage through energy efficiency programs."

More people going on federal benefit rolls in the last several years, in Michigan and nationwide, is taking its toll at the federal trust fund for workers who left the labor force due to a long-term disability claim.
A new report last week by the board of trustees for the trust embroiled in the debate — the Old-Age, Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance Trust Funds — indicates the fund that pays benefits to former workers with qualifying disabilities had just $60.2 billion in reserve assets at the end of 2014. That's down from $90.4 billion at the end of 2013.
The trust, established in 1957, has been losing money since 2008, when a slightly better than break-even year had put its reserve assets to an all-time high of $215.8 billion.
At the current rate of cash burn, Social Security expects the trust to be depleted before the end of 2016...

Just under 514,000 people — one of every 12 adults aged 18-64 statewide, and one of every 10 people in Michigan's current labor force — collects either Social Security Disability Insurance, Supplemental Security Income or both, according to the most recent data from the Social Security Administration.
In fact, Michigan has the seventh-largest population of such beneficiaries and had the fifth-largest increase in recipients for the 10-year period ending December 2013.
And that's even though it's only the 10th most populous state — and the only state whose total population fell during that period..."

 Christopher Burke, who was recently sentenced to four months in jail and five years of probation in the case, denied any sexual involvement with the girl, though did admit she was a fellow "furry" and joined in the cuddle piles at his Ann Arbor apartment, according to the report, obtained by The News via a Freedom of Information Act request.
As Burke explained to Ann Arbor police detectives, "furry fandom" is an activity in which people dress up in mascot costumes, sometimes for sexual purposes.
While he said when questioned by police that he didn't have sex with the 15-year-old, Burke eventually pleaded no contest to one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct in June.
Burke also declined to take a polygraph test in the case.

Emergency calls began at 4:12 a.m. Saturday, July 18, when residents in the area of Chevrolet and Jackson avenues reported a white Chevrolet Impala left the road and hit a tree.
Tolbert said the police department couldn't send anyone because officers were tied up at two priority scenes: a homicide investigation and a separate shooting.
Instead, dispatch sent a Mobile Medical Response ambulance following the initial 911 calls, city officials said.
But when the first ambulance arrived at 4:26 a.m. — just one minute after it was dispatched — the crew reported there was no one in the vehicle, and the report was downgraded to a less-serious call of a single-car property damage accident, abandoned vehicle, Tolbert said.

Kim’s problems stem from something a little more sophomoric:
“I used it to budget for school clothes and college break money.
I probably should have not done that.
I took a trip to Europe…

Kim used a voice changer and didn’t provide her last name to the show, which is probably a good thing since the young woman’s story is pretty much guaranteed to induce a facepalm.
From Kim’s point of view, there are only two people to blame for her current predicament:

They never sat me down and had a real serious talk about it.”
Kim went on to explain that she went to her parents for more money, who refused any more handouts.
“They said there was nothing they could do for me.
They’re not being honest with me saying they don’t have [money] because my dad has worked for like a million years and they have a retirement account.
My parents suggested I go take out a loan at a credit union and I’m like, how am I supposed to do that?…
I have to go inside the bank to get a loan?”
The young woman said she would consider getting a job to cover her costs, but it’s just “so embarrassing.”
