A 10-panel comic explores a subtle kind of racism many people of color experience.
"If we're being honest, we all make assumptions about other people, right?
We look at their skin, their clothes, and their car, and we make guesses about them that we don't even realize we're making.
Everyone does it.
You ask a pregnant female coworker if she'll keep working after the baby is born — but you wouldn't think to ask that question of a guy who was about to become a dad.
You ask that nice girl behind the counter at the bagel shop whether she'll ever go to college so she can get a better job — only to learn that she's an underemployed Ph.D.
You ask a hipster-looking guy on the subway whether he's into artisanal pickles — but he just happens to be a bad dresser who has no idea what you're talking about.
The fact is, though, that people of color deal with other people's assumptions constantly.
Research shows that other people's expectations can have a profound effect on us.
They can determine our success or failure.
And black women deal with this nonsense more than others.
In a recent study, nearly half of the female black and Latina scientists polled reported being mistaken for janitors or administrative staff.
Let's agree to fix this.

Levin: We'll Lose The Country If We Don't Have A Reawakening Of Americanism | Daily Wire:
"Progressives also seek to create a society based on positive rights, where the government provides a right to "health care and food and shelter." But this is not what the founders wanted.
"They figured we'll take care of that," Levin said. "We want our liberty, we want our freedom. … if we do not engage in the battle of ideas — not so much against elites, but elitism — we're going to lose because most societies are formed by the elites, by the intellectuals by the academics whether we like it or not.""

And Yet President Trump, in His Classically Inartful Way, Was Absolutely Right | The American Spectator:
"The media get exercised when President Trump does not parrot their scripts, but they never minded that Barack Obama would not call out leftist rioters and violent leftist organizations by name. As inner cities would burn, with innocents watching their life savings go aflame as mobs would burn down their inner-city stores in cities from Baltimore to Ferguson, the Obama Administration avoided planting blame or naming hate groups. When a Jihadist murdered Americans serving our nation faithfully at Fort Hood, Obama attributed the murders to “workplace violence.” Obama never could articulate the term “Radical Islamist terrorist,” as though he were Lou Costello fearing what would happen to him if he said “Niagara Falls.” When Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot by her own former supporter, a mentally ill clinger who had backed the Democrat, the media blamed the violence on Republicans like Sarah Palin"

Great American Eclipse, and along most of its path, there live almost no black people.-----davidthompson: Excruciatingly Woke

"Excruciatingly Woke
"Excruciatingly Woke
In today’s competitive grievance culture, unearthing new sorrows, or reheating old sorrows, can require prodigious, indeed bewildering, feats of contortion.
And so, in the pages of The Atlantic, we find one Alice Ristroph railing at the heavens.
First, a little context:
On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will arrive mid-morning on the coast of Oregon. The moon’s shadow will be about 70 miles wide, and it will race across the country faster than the speed of sound, exiting the eastern seaboard shortly before 3pm local time.
Clouds permitting, it should be quite a thing to witness.
It has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, and along most of its path, there live almost no black people.
There we go. If that one caught you off guard, here’s another:
As the eclipse approaches, the temperature will fall and birds will roost, and then, suddenly, the lights will go out. For each place within the path of totality, the darkness will last a minute, maybe two, and then daylight will return. Oregon, where this begins, is almost entirely white. The 10 percent or so of state residents who do not identify as white are predominantly Latino, American Indian, Alaskan, or Asian.
...The message, it seems, is that people – specifically, black ones - aren’t arranged geographically as Professor Ristroph would wish..."

"IT’S ON: Kamala Harris Will Be ‘Knocking on Doors in Iowa.’
Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D.) said California Sen. Kamala Harris (D.) will be “knocking on doors in Iowa,” indicating Saturday he expects she will run for president.Villaraigosa, who is running for Governor of California in 2018, was asked by MSNBC host Hugh Hewitt about Harris, a newly elected senator considered a rising star in the Democratic Party. Hewitt predicted she would be the nominee for the Democrats in 2020.
“Has she got a stake in this governor’s race?” Hewitt asked.“Well, not yet,” Villaraigosa said. “I hope she will support my candidacy, but as you say, she is a great candidate. She’s going to be knocking on doors in Iowa, I expect. But in any case, I’m focused on this race, not the presidential race.”
"An unaccomplished first-term Senator with nothing going for her but skin color, a telegenic personality, and a predictably progressive record?
Nah, could never happen."

IT staffers may have compromised sensitive data to foreign intelligence | New York Post:
"Alarm bells went off in April 2016 when computer security officials in the House reported “irregularities” in computer equipment purchasing. An internal investigation revealed the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars in government property, and evidence pointed to five IT staffers and the Democratic Congress members’ offices that employed them.
The evidence was turned over to the House inspector general, who found so much “smoke” that she recommended a criminal probe, sources say. The case was turned over to Capitol Police in October."

"Seeking government revenue"?-----Consumer Reports Says 42 Percent Want More Taxes On Soda | Science Codex
Consumer Reports Says 42 Percent Want More Taxes On Soda | Science Codex:
"Consumer Reports took a survey of 1,010 adults to gauge interest in using “behavior” or “sin” taxes as government weapons against obesity.
...Seeking government revenue, municipalities across the nation are seeking to hike taxes on some sugar-sweetened drinks (but controversially not others) as a way to reduce sugar consumption and calories and help prevent obesity and related chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
Though it has failed in cities like Berkeley, calories went up rather than down while soda revenue simply shifted to surrounding areas, while in Philadelphia it's cheaper to buy beer than soda, Consumer Reports seeks to lend credibility to calls for more.
Namely, that the public is demanding more taxes.
...With over 60 percent of people overweight, it makes sense that 42 percent might believe higher taxes will prevent it, but that has never been the case.
In New York City, as the American Council on Science and Health has shown, huge tax increases just led to a huge black market, and when government told police to crack down on sales of individual cigarettes to protect declining cigarette tax revenue, the highly controversial death of Eric Garner occurred.
That's the problem with government controlling behavior...."

2.7-Million-Year-Old Ice Exposes Al Gore as Complete Fraud
"...Now, a piece of 2.7-million-year-old ice is exposing his (Gore's) agenda as a complete fraud.
According to Science Daily, it was announced earlier this week “that a core drilled in Antarctica has yielded 2.7-million-year-old ice, an astonishing find 1.7 million years older than the previous record-holder.
“Bubbles in the ice contain greenhouse gases from Earth’s atmosphere at a time when the planet’s cycles of glacial advance and retreat were just beginning, potentially offering clues to what triggered the ice ages,” the article reads.
And what caused those ice ages?
Low carbon dioxide levels.
...The paper revealed that carbon dioxide levels during the era in question “did not exceed 300 parts per million, well below today’s levels.”
That would be a necessary precondition to cause a series of ice ages.
...Nobody wants to see another ice age — and it seems unlikely that we’ll get there, even though some climate scientists warned us one was imminent back in the 1970s.
It’s time that we just admit that the science simply isn’t settled and that doomsday is not right around the corner.
Liberals like Al Gore can’t have it both ways.
Either the science is settled or it’s fluid — and the evidence seems to suggest that it’s likely the latter.
That means all of the hysterics are nothing more than fraud."

Thank God for "expert advice"!-----Here’s how to avoid wrecking your car during the eclipse - The Verge
Here’s how to avoid wrecking your car during the eclipse - The Verge:
"...DON’T LOOK AT THE ECLIPSE WHILE DRIVING
"...DON’T LOOK AT THE ECLIPSE WHILE DRIVING
There are more ways to drive distracted than ever, from in-car Wi-Fi to Snapchat to Pokémon Go (which has already claimed one driver’s life). So apologies if this sounds repetitive, but really don’t do it. Plan ahead. If you really want to view the eclipse (remember: solar filter glasses), do it from somewhere that’s not your driver’s seat.
DON’T PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY EITHER
Obvious? Sure. But the path of totality will cross more than 20 interstates, and the eclipse is expected to last less than three minutes, which means the temptation to just pull over quick and take a peak will be overwhelming. But don’t do it. If you’re standing on the side of an interstate staring up at the sky, you won’t see that 18-wheeler bearing down on you until it’s too late.
THERE WILL BE MANY, MANY PEDESTRIANS OUT — DON’T KILL THEM
Motorists will be forgiven for thinking they’ve stumbled onto the set of The Walking Dead, given the hordes of pedestrians that will be out, staring zombie-like at the sky and not paying attention to their surroundings. You, the driver, will be operating a two-ton vehicle in their midst. Be mindful.
