Donald Trump’s Idea to Cut National Debt: Get Creditors to Accept Less - The New York Times

Donald Trump’s Idea to Cut National Debt: Get Creditors to Accept Less - The New York Times:

"Experts also described Mr. Trump’s proposal as fanciful, saying there was no reason to think America’s creditors would accept anything less than 100 cents on the dollar, regardless of Mr. Trump’s deal-making prowess.

“No one on the other side would pick up the phone if the secretary of the U.S. Treasury tried to make that call,” said Lou Crandall, chief economist at Wrightson ICAP. “Why should they? They have a contract” requiring payment in full.

Mr. Trump told CNBC that he was concerned about the impact of higher interest rates on the cost of servicing the federal debt."

Who's Been Voting for Them?

Mullings An American Cyber Column By Rich Galen
  • Here's what I don't understand.
  • I have been told, and have retold, the theory that people who vote in primaries - Republican and Democrat - are far to the right and left of the total members of their respective political parties.
  • That those who actually come out to vote are the true believers. The most righteous of the Right, and the most, uh, lefteous of the Left.
  • Yet, here were are in 2016.
  • The most loyal members of the Democrat party are voting for Hillary Clinton over the most Liberal choice, Bernie Sanders.
  • The most loyal members of the Republican party are voting for Donald Trump over the most Conservative choice, Ted Cruz.
  • As every 2nd tier stand-up comedian of the past 20 years might have said: What's up with that?
  • Nationally, according to the most recent USA Today/Suffolk University poll, Donald Trump's Fave/Unfave was 28.2 - 61.4.
  • But.
  • Hillary Clinton's Fave/Unfave in that same poll was 37.4 - 54.2.
  • Seven percentage points better, but not exactly Doris Day numbers.
  • So, if neither Clinton nor Trump is the most Liberal nor the most Conservative, and if a wide swath of the American public hates their guts; who the hell has been voting for them?
  • Read on!

McCrory’s statement came after the Justice Department announced earlier this week that the state’s controversial House Bill 2 violates federal civil rights laws.

The Justice Department stated Wednesday that it informed McCrory and other state officials that they have until Monday to “confirm [sic] that the State will not comply with or implement HB2.” McCrory called the deadline “unrealistic.”

"The Cornell Student Assembly voted 26-1-0 this past Thursday to recommend creation of a “diversity and inclusivity training program” for all university employees.
Black Students United Co-President Samari Gilbert used a collection of “racial insensitivity” stories culled from an anonymous student survey to defend the need for the training.
“One student shared a story about professors calling her a name different than her given one because it was easier to pronounce,” Gilbert related.

Lots of tawdry details here-----Corruption schemes ran deep at DPS

Corruption schemes ran deep at DPS:
"One by one, they confessed their crimes: six Detroit principals admitted cheating their students for money and gift cards — kickbacks from a vendor who wanted favors.
One principal said "I fell from the grace of God."
Another said she spent the kickbacks on her students.
A third man said, "I just got caught up in it."
While their demeanor and explanations varied, one common theme emerged in U.S. District Court this past week as the six Detroit Public School educators pleaded guilty to their roles in a $2.7-million kickback scheme:
Corruption was a way of life at DPS for years, where businessmen offered bribes in exchange for favors, and school officials quietly obliged.

Attack victim claims police told her to dye hair - The Local:
"A student attacked by a gang of four men has accused police of blaming her because she had blonde hair and sexy clothing.
The incident happened when the young woman, identified only by her first name Sabina, who lives in the capital Vienna had been waiting for a train on the S6 line at the city's main Westbahnhof station.
The 20-year-old, who was hospitalised after the attack by four men in which she was beaten and robbed, told Heute newspaper: "I felt so helpless."
"I had been standing on the platform waiting for the train when a man came up to me and spoke to me in a foreign language.
He then started putting his hands through my hair and made it clear that in his cultural background there were hardly any blonde women.
I told him to go away, and for a short while he really did go away."
"But it was only to get his pals and a bit later he came back with three others.
They stole my handbag and my cards."
And if that was not enough, she said that the four had then attacked her, bashing her to the ground in a rage before running off.
She said that from what they had said she understood they were from Afghanistan and that as she lay on the floor in agony nobody on the platform had helped.
After being treated at hospital for bruising to her head, shoulder and elbow as well as her spine and hips, she went to police.
And her distress had turned to anger when police had told her that she should change her hair colour and should not have been travelling alone after 8pm on public transport..."

Then he waved his arm at the ranks of screening apparatus and long lines of haggard airline passengers and said something like: "This is all a joke. I can think of a hundred ways to sneak a weapon through all of this."
A report leaked out of the Transportation Security Administration reveals that a team of investigators from the Department of Homeland Security managed to sneak weapons and fake bombs past airport screeners in 95% of their attempts to beat the system.
That means what many of us suspected all along has now been confirmed.
All those expensive body and baggage scanning machines, all that intrusive rummaging through luggage, all those intimate pat-downs of little kids and grannies, all those nail clippers confiscated, all those bottles of liquids seized, all those shoes and belts taken off, all those laptops pulled out and all those thousands of frustrating hours wasted in line have been mostly for show.
...There have got to be smarter ways to provide real security at airports.
Treating the 99.99% of travelers who just want to get from here to there like criminal suspects has always been offensive.
Now we know it is also woefully ineffective."

The Next Big Bailout? Treasury Rejects Proposal To Cut Pension Benefits

The Next Big Bailout? Treasury Rejects Proposal To Cut Pension Benefits | Zero Hedge:
"UPS, and roughly 270,000 retired truck drivers, construction workers, and other service workers can breathe a collective sigh of relief... for now.
...Absent an injection of funds or benefit cuts, the fund which pays out $2.8 billion in benefits a year will be insolvent within ten years...
According to the WSJ, the fund currently has $16.8 billion in assets against $35 billion in liabilities, and has roughly one active worker contributing to the fund for every four retirees that draw from it.
So we're now back to where we started.
The Central States Pension Fund will by its own estimates be insolvent within ten years, and the government safety net, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp cannot be counted on to pick up the benefits because it too is well on its way to insolvency.
If the Treasury won't allow any pension cuts, and the government created safety net won't be there to keep the benefits flowing, how will the cash continue to flow to members?
With the precedent now set by the Treasury that no cuts will be allowed, the answer will likely come in the form of a massive bailout."

Something that appears potentially scandalous on its face turns out to be innocuous, but an investigation into it reveals different questionable behavior.
The canonical case is Whitewater, a failed real-estate investment Bill and Hillary Clinton made in 1978.
Although no inquiry ever produced evidence of wrongdoing, investigations ultimately led to President Clinton’s impeachment for perjury and obstruction of justice.
With Hillary Clinton leading the field for the Democratic nomination for president, every Clinton scandal—from Whitewater to the State Department emails—will be under the microscope.
(No other American politicians—even ones as corrupt as Richard Nixon, or as hated by partisans as George W. Bush—have fostered the creation of a permanent multimillion-dollar cottage industry devoted to attacking them.)

The prestigious West Point military academy has opened an inquiry after 16 black female cadets posed for a photo with fists raised in militant style.
The pose struck by the cadets, dressed in their gray uniforms while standing on the steps of barracks in late April, is seen by some critics as an implicit show of support for the Black Lives Matter movement and thus a potential violation of a Defense Department rule against “partisan political activity.”
...The young women were following a longtime tradition at West Point, where soon-to-be graduates each year strike stern and straightlaced poses in historic style much as their predecessors have done for more than a century.

Oakland PD cancels Cinco de Mayo DUI checkpoints to avoid offending anyone

Oakland PD cancels Cinco de Mayo DUI checkpoints to avoid offending anyone « Hot Air:
"It’s the little things that make life special, but it may also be the little things that let you know when you’ve truly developed a problem.
If you happen to live in the greater Oakland, California area, this story is the sort of indicator which just might let you know it’s time to leave.
We’ve seen too many stories of political correctness infecting the government to count here, and occasionally it washes over into the field of law enforcement, but this one is simply staggering.
The Oakland PD had scheduled a series of sobriety checkpoints around the city for Cinco de Mayo and, as usual, let everyone know they would be on the job to prevent people from driving drunk after the partying was done. (Hat tip to Immigration Reform.)
This somehow raised the dander of someone in the Latino community who amazingly claimed this was a demonstration of racism. A group called Oakland Latinos United took to Facebook to voice their complaints.
“Oakland Police has posted on their Twitter account they’re going to put out Extra Patrols for you drunk Mexicans on Cinco de Mayo,” said a post on the Facebook page Oakland Latinos United. “How does it feel. As a Mexican Chicano I wonder if OPD will be posting DUI PSAs for every ethnic & culturally based holiday?”
So how did the Oakland PD respond? They cancelled the DUI checkpoints. (Fox News)
A warning about drunk-driving checkpoints during the Cinco de Mayo holiday got the Oakland (Calif.) Police Department in hot water.
The lengthy warning, titled “Fiesta Time or Jail Times,” about driving while intoxicated made many references to such drinks as tequila and margaritas, and many people complained it was offensive.
“In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become synonymous with festive fiestas and salty margaritas,” the warning said. “Historically, the fifth of May commemorates Mexico’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War, but present-day celebrations often lead to drunk driving—and there’s no victory in that.”
Criticism about the warning prompted the Oakland Police Department to issue an apology and then cancel the checkpoints...
