To the more cynical among us, “seven percent” seems like an abnormally high number...
Given the climate at your average American university, seven percent seems almost generous.
Our campuses have an ideology problem.
It’s not simply that more and more colleges have begun kowtowing to the absurdist, shrieking demands of hysterical student mobs (though that is a problem, and a significant one); it is, rather, than progressive professors and administrators increasingly have nobody with which to disagree, and nobody who will disagree with them.
We all experience this in our lives to certain degrees: most people have family, or friends, or both, with whom they are more or less ideologically aligned.
But a too-homogenous network of friends and family can be, in the end, intellectually poisonous, sort of like a vaccination in reverse.
You can very easily forget that there are other people with other opinions out there, individuals who might not see the world in just the same way you do.
And such political insularity can be intellectually and philosophically dangerous..."

"EAST LANSING - An item found on a stairwell door handle in a Michigan State University residence hall and initially believed to be a noose was, in fact, a shoelace, MSU police say.
...A matching packaged shoelace was found outside Holden Hall, the residence hall where the incident was reported, MSU spokesman Jason Cody said in a news release.
MSU police spoke with the student who lost both shoelaces which "are packaged in a way that someone could perceive them to look similar to a noose," Cody said..."

"I was distressed this morning to learn of a racial incident in one of our residence halls. A student reported a noose was hung outside of her room. I want to recognize the courage it took for the student to report this incident.
MSU Police and our Office of Institutional Equity were immediately notified, and both promptly began investigations. I want to be clear: This type of behavior is not tolerated on our campus. No Spartan should ever feel targeted based on their race, or other ways in which they identify. A noose is a symbol of intimidation and threat that has a horrendous history in America.
While at this time we do not know all of the details, the Spartan community can be assured we are vigorously investigating this situation."
