Millikin University allegedly threatens frats with sanctions for face-painting

Millikin allegedly threatens frats with sanctions for face-painting
"Members of a fraternity at Millikin University will allegedly no longer be allowed to paint their faces during an annual recruitment event because the school’s office of inclusion deemed the tradition “cultural appropriation.”
“Members of [Tau Kappa Epsilon] are prohibited from wearing black and red paint, wigs/and or clothing items that mimic or depict an ethnicity or culture. Failure to comply with the expectation will result in immediate removal from the event, and additional student conduct sanctions,” warns an email allegedly sent to the president of TKE, whose name was removed from the email for purposes of anonymity.
Traditionally, members of TKE and four other fraternities at Millikin paint their faces with each organization’s respective colors as part of an annual recruitment event.
Some students, however, apparently complained about the event this year, alleging that face-painting is disrespectful to certain cultures and ethnicities..."

Test Scores in Trinidad Skyrocketed After This One Simple Change

Test Scores in Trinidad Skyrocketed After This One Simple Change | Intellectual Takeout:
"In recent weeks, the big topic of discussion has revolved around bathrooms and whether or not there is value in limiting them to a single sex.
Although not as visible, another gender debate has been in the works for years.
That debate has to do with whether or not there is value in separating the sexes in the classroom.
Scientists have examined this topic for years and come up with a variety of conclusions.
But the latest finding suggests that separating the sexes can have a number of benefits – at a cost-effective price.
Published by Northwestern University, the study involved several disadvantaged public schools in Trinidad and Tobago that were transitioned from coed schools to single-sex institutions over a period of several years.
The study found that the change improved test scores in a number of subjects for both boys and girls, providing the same benefits as students would have had in “going from a teacher at the 6th percentile of teacher quality to one at the 50th percentile of teacher quality.”
In addition to higher test scores, the study found that single-sex classrooms resulted in the following:

  • Increased the tendency of students to take and succeed in advanced placement courses
  • Increased high school graduation rates
  • Decreased the likelihood of male arrests
  • The study augments earlier research that showed that single-sex education encourages better attendance, participation, and behavior in class.

Separating the sexes in school won’t solve every educational woe in the American system, but if there are empirical benefits such as those cited above, does single-sex education perhaps deserve a second look?"

Have we heard this pipe dream before?-----State puts $7,500 on table for first-time, move-up home buyers

State puts $7,500 on table for first-time, move-up home buyers | MLive.com:
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – First-time home buyers can get up to $7,500 toward a down payment and closing costs, thanks to a couple of programs offered by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.
The MI First Home program also is available to past homeowners who lost their homes to foreclosure and have restored their credit for at least three years, according to Mary Townley, MSHDA's director of homeownership.
The program, which is funded through the sale of bonds, is enjoying a resurgence in the past two years as the state's housing market recovers and its residents re-enter the housing market after The Great Recession.
...While homebuyers welcome the extra cash at closing, it's not costing the taxpayers anything, Elsenheimer said.
Money for the program is raised through the sale of tax-free bonds by the state.
MHSDA also is promoting a program called MI Next Home, which puts up to $7,500, or up to 4 percent of the sale price, on the table at the closing for qualified homeowners who need the cash to make the leap to a new home..."

Whitewater: Twelve Versions of Hillary Clinton Draft Indictment, 451 Pages, Withheld By National Archives - Judicial Watch

Whitewater: Twelve Versions of Hillary Clinton Draft Indictment, 451 Pages, Withheld By National Archives - Judicial Watch:

"New details continue to emerge from Judicial Watch’s Freedom of Information Act fight with the National Archives over the release of draft indictments of Hillary Clinton in the Whitewater case. According to the Archives, release of the indictments—drafted by an independent counsel examining the Clintons’ relationship to a corrupt Arkansas S&L and an alleged cover-up—would violate grand jury secrecy and Mrs. Clinton’s personal privacy. FOIA request denied.

Judicial Watch declined to take “no” for an answer, and so off to court we went. The case is now in the hands of a federal judge.

In the course of litigation, new facts have come to light. Under FOIA, the Archives must produce a “Vaughn Index”—"

America's unregulated shampooer menace

Glenn Reynolds: America's unregulated shampooer menace:
"The single best anti-poverty program is a job.
So why does government at all levels make it so hard to get one?
In my home state of Tennessee, for example, it takes 300 hours of training to be licensed to shampoo hair.
That’s right: 300 hours.
That training covers things like applying shampoo, rinsing and conditioning and answering the phone and taking appointments.
Shampoo hair without a license, and you can get six months in jail.
I think I could teach everything you need to know about shampooing in under an hour:
Don’t get it in people’s eyes, keep a sharp lookout for lice and rinse thoroughly when you’re done.
Answering the phone is something you can learn on your own.
But it gets worse.
It turns out that, according to a lawsuit filed by the Beacon Center of Tennessee, a libertarian public-interest group, you can’t even get the 300-hour curriculum because there isn’t anyplace in Tennessee that teaches the course that is required to obtain the license.
So to shampoo hair you have to get a full-scale cosmetologist license, which takes even longer and costs even more..."

11 Signs That The U.S. Economy Is Rapidly Deteriorating Even As The Stock Market Soars

11 Signs That The U.S. Economy Is Rapidly Deteriorating Even As The Stock Market Soars:
We have seen this story before, and it never ends well.
From mid-March until early May 2008, a vigorous stock market rally convinced many investors that the market turmoil of late 2007 and early 2008 was over and that happy days were ahead for the U.S. economy.
But of course we all know what happened.
It turned out that the market downturns of late 2007 and early 2008 were just “foreshocks” of a much greater crash in late 2008.
The market surge in the spring of 2008 was just a mirage, and it masked rapidly declining economic fundamentals.
Well, the exact same thing is happening right now.
The Dow rose another 222 points on Tuesday, but meanwhile virtually every number that we are getting is just screaming that the overall U.S. economy is steadily falling apart.
So don’t be fooled by a rising stock market.  Just like in the spring of 2008, all of the signs are pointing to an avalanche of bad economic news in the months ahead.
The following are 11 signs that the U.S. economy is rapidly deteriorating…
#1 Total business sales have been declining for nearly two years, and they are now about 15 percent lower than they were in late 2014.
#2 The inventory to sales ratio is now back to near where it was during the depths of the last recession.  This means that there is lots and lots of unsold stuff just sitting around out there, and that is a sign of a very unhealthy economy.
#3 Corporate earnings have declined for four consecutive quarters.  This never happens outside of a recession.
...#5 In April, commercial bankruptcies were up 32 percent on a year over year basis, and Chapter 11 filings were up 67 percent on a year over year basis.  This is exactly the kind of spike that we witnessed during the initial stages of the last major financial crisis as well..."

Keeping their friends (contributors?) on the payroll?----- CDC labs repeatedly faced secret sanctions for mishandling bioterror germs

CDC labs repeatedly faced secret sanctions for mishandling bioterror germs:
"A laboratory operated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is among the handful of facilities that have secretly had their permits suspended in recent years for serious safety violations while working with bioterror pathogens, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY after winning a Freedom of Information Act appeal.
The CDC's own labs also have been referred for additional secret federal enforcement actions six times because of serious or repeated violations in how they've handled certain viruses, bacteria and toxins that are heavily regulated because of their potential use as bioweapons, the CDC admitted for the first time on Tuesday.
Before USA TODAY won access to records of the lab suspension, the CDC had repeatedly refused to answer questions about its own labs' enforcement histories.
...Only five labs have been suspended from the Federal Select Agent Program since 2003, and another five labs have faced repeated referrals for enforcement actions, according to information the CDC provided last year to USA TODAY and later to congressional investigators.
The revelation that CDC's own labs are among these small groups that have faced serious and repeated sanctions raised questions among some lab safety watchdogs about the agency’s secrecy motives..."

TSA warned flyers' patience at "breaking point" over long lines

TSA warned flyers' patience at "breaking point" over long lines - CBS News:
"It's the irony of flying.
Planes are the fastest way to travel, but wait times just to get on board keep getting longer, reports CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller.
Now airports in New York and New Jersey are joining a growing chorus of complaints about the long wait times at airport security, saying TSA staffing isn't keeping up with increased passenger traffic.
"The flight only took two hours, but you had to get to the airport two hours early, you know, to get through the security line, which is kind of unfortunate," traveler Heidi Kerns said.
...Even if these airports do follow through with plans to hire outside security screeners, they wouldn't be in place in time for the busy summer travel season.
This problem isn't going away on its own.
The Port Authority says between mid-March and mid-April, the daily average of maximum wait times at John F. Kennedy International Airport was up 82 percent."

We MUST move now!-----We Don’t Need Billions to Prevent Zika

We Don’t Need Billions to Prevent Zika | Somewhat Reasonable:
"Controlling mosquitoes and preventing diseases requires smarter policies, not more billions
The Zika virus is increasingly linked to serious neurological complications for pregnant women and microcephaly in newborns: smaller than normal heads and brains.
It also affects areas of fetal brains that control basic muscular, motor, speech and other functions, leading to severe debilities that require expensive care throughout a person’s life.
...Not surprisingly, the request has spawned new budget battles in Washington.
The White House and congressional Democrats want to spend new money, while Republicans insist there is already plenty of money in the budget, plenty wasted that could be better allocated, and plenty being spent on climate change and other programs that have a far lower priority than this public health menace.
...Meanwhile, much can be done right now, to reduce mosquito populations and slash the incidence and spread of this disease, for far less than $2 billion.
It requires smarter policies, more focused efforts.
(go to this list!)
...They live close to houses, rarely fly more than 80 feet from where they hatch, bite during the day, and hatch from eggs laid in tires, cans, jars, flower pots, vases, bromeliads, holes in trees, and almost any other containers that hold water, indoors and outdoors, in backyards and junkyards.
That means national and international health ministries, neighborhoods and individual families can undertake simple, low-cost actions that will bring rapid, significant returns with limited time, money and resources – by eliminating mosquitoes and keeping them away from people. They should start now...
This multi-pronged approach is true “integrated vector and disease control.”
It will bring rapid returns.
...We cannot afford to deemphasize or shortchange the less sexy, but proven, highly effective, truly integrated vector and disease control programs described above.
These strategies can and must be employed now, to eliminate Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and the horrible diseases they spread.
They will save lives now – in time for the Olympics, before these bugs and diseases claim more victims.

"A man has been arrested over an online video that reportedly shows a dog making a Nazi salute.
The 28-year-old, from Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire, faces hate crime charges over the video, Police Scotland said.

UVA student: ‘American’ identity ‘the most blatant microaggression’

UVA student: ‘American’ identity ‘the most blatant microaggression’

  • During a “Managing Microaggressions” event at the University of Virginia, students spoke out against microaggressions like identifying as “American” and criticizing someone’s taste in food.
  • Attendees argued that there is a limit to the type of speech that is acceptable, but could not agree on how that limit should be determined or enforced.
  • “I’m not gonna lie; when I see somebody who looks like a stereotypical frat brother, I get scared to share certain things.”
A Hispanic student from the School of Education began by declaring that “I refuse to take up [the] identity” of “American” because “this country has decided to take it upon itself to identify as an entire hemisphere,” which he called “the most blatant microaggression in the context of this country.”
Instead of American, the student said he identifies as Latinx, queer, socioeconomically disadvantaged, and from Southern California. Later, recounting the time he told his mother he was queer, he noted her response of “I love you. Do you need to speak to a counselor?” “as if though my sexuality’s…some mental health problem that I had to deal with.”...

North Carolina to Take Federal Government to Court Over State’s LGBT ‘Bathroom Bill’ | TheBlaze.com:

"The North Carolina governor called the Monday deadline “unrealistic.” He also shared his view that the move to demand that all states allow transgender individuals to enter the bathrooms and changing facilities of their choice is a clear example of political overreach.

“So now the federal government is gonna tell almost every private sector company in the United State who can and who cannot come into their bathrooms, their restrooms, their shower facilities,” McCrory said Sunday."
