UMD student calls hippie-inspired fashion 'deeply offensive'

Image result for drunk hippiesUMD student calls hippie-inspired fashion 'deeply offensive':
"A student at the University of Maryland is claiming that mainstream fashion makes “a mockery of the hippie movement” because hippies vehemently opposed “consumerism and commercialism.”
In an op-ed for The Diamondback, senior Aiyah Sibay asserts that the modern fashion industry selfishly steals hippie clothing styles to make money while ignoring the larger implications of the hippie movement, calling it a “great irony” that hippies represented “a brave rejection of the mainstream” and thus would never be interested in popular culture or fashion.
Sibay argues that while the hippie movement had its roots in opposition to the Vietnam War, it soon became a “way of life” that “would not accept the rigid system of capitalism,” contending that selling clothing meant to imitate their culture “is contradictory to the values the hippie movement represented...”

7 government programs that increase poverty

7 government programs that increase poverty:

"For all the obsessing in Washington over income inequality, why isn’t there more outrage over government policies that exacerbate the problem? There are hundreds of programs that increase poverty in America. Last week, at the Heritage Foundation forum on this very topic, my colleagues exposed many of these programs.

Economist Don Boudreaux of George Mason University unmasked two such policies. "

California Collapsing Under the Weight of Leftist Policies | The Federalist Papers:
"As California continues to caterwaul about Calexit and fighting President Donald Trump, their state is literally collapsing under the weight of insane leftist policies.
Thomas Del Beccaro wrote an op-ed in Forbes that laid out the sorry state California has put itself in after years of infrastructure neglect, with those funds being diverted to illegals, global warming, and other such social-justice absurdity.
 Del Beccaro wrote:
It is said that California has over $77 billion in deferred road, highway and bridge maintenance.  It showed this week with a sink hole in LA because of the rain they didn’t predict.  There is also the collapse of part of one of its main highways in the North, Highway 50, from the rain they didn’t predict – not to mention the Oroville dam, the break in a Central Valley levee and over-flowing dams causing flooding in places like the southern part of Silicon Valley.
Of course, there is the whole issue of the lack of water infrastructure in California.  There is not enough of it to store and supply the water needed for its industry and residents.  Indeed, the system was designed for half those living in California today. Keep in mind that, three years ago, even the EPA said California needs $44.5 billion to fix the infrastructure that it has..."

Can an Airline Really Just Yank You Off the Plane?

Can an Airline Really Just Yank You Off the Plane?:
"By now there's a good chance you've seen the shocking video from a United Airlines plane at Chicago's O'Hare airport.
united-seating-division.jpgThe clip—in which a bloodied man is forcibly dragged off an overbooked flight to make room for an airline employee—has justifiably caused a sensation on social media. And lots of people who saw the fracas must have wondered:
Does the airline really have the right to do this?
The short answer, according to aviation and government sources, is that airlines have a lot of leeway to remove a traveler from a plane, for any reason.
"Passengers have far fewer 'rights' than they imagine," says George Hobica, president of AirfareWatchdog.com.
...That's when the "involuntary denied boarding" rules kick in, and if you want to know everything about the sorry-sounding legal term, it's all spelled out in plain English in a government consumer guide called Fly Rights.
Basically: When airlines have exhausted all other options, they have to start picking which customers they'll bump, and explain their reasoning in writing.
Usually it's based on the fare paid (whoever paid the least gets bumped first), but other factors can be weighed.
...So why can't a passenger simply refuse to leave, as the man in the video did?
(He reportedly told the crew he was a doctor and he too needed to be at his destination the following morning for work.)
Well, at that point the airline had another legal weapon:
Any action or behavior that is judged to be "interfering with the flight crew" is against the law. "Interfering" is vague and can cover a broad range of passenger behavior, and can encompass almost anything that makes the flight crew feel uncomfortable..."

From Responsibility to Protect to Slave Markets - The American Interest

From Responsibility to Protect to Slave Markets - The American Interest:
"If a Republican President had invaded Libya and overthrown its government, then left bloody chaos, terrorism and rampant arms smuggling behind, our courageous press corps would be all over the story like a chicken on a June bug.
But fortunately all this happened under President Obama, so we don’t hear all that much about it. And when we do, nobody tries to assign blame to the arrogant ignoramuses who “organized” this disaster.
But the latest news, that slave markets are now operating in Libya, where desperate black Africans are being bought and sold as slaves, ought to trigger some kind of response. The Guardian:
Image result for slave markets are now operating in Libya,The north African nation is a major exit point for refugees from Africa trying to take boats to Europe. But since the overthrow of autocratic leader Muammar Gaddafi, the vast, sparsely populated country has slid into violent chaos and migrants with little cash and usually no papers are particularly vulnerable.
One 34-year-old survivor from Senegal said he was taken to a dusty lot in the south Libyan city of Sabha after crossing the desert from Niger in a bus organised by people smugglers. The group had paid to be taken to the coast, where they planned to risk a boat trip to Europe, but their driver suddenly said middlemen had not passed on his fees and put his passengers up for sale.
“The men on the pick-up were brought to a square, or parking lot, where a kind of slave trade was happening. There were locals – he described them as Arabs – buying sub-Saharan migrants,” said Livia Manante, an IOM officer based in Niger who helps people wanting to return home.
She interviewed the survivor after he escaped from Libya earlier this month and said accounts of slave markets were confirmed by other migrants she spoke to in Niger and some who had been interviewed by colleagues in Europe.
Again, if Republicans were responsible for this it would be the Biggest. Disaster. Ever.
As it is: crickets.

Regulation madness: Judge prevents Seattle from forcing Uber/Lyft drivers to join Teamsters union – TheBlaze:

"The Seattle ordinance is just the latest effort on the part of taxi drivers and the powerful unions that represent them to use the coercive power of state and local governments in an attempt to drive up costs for Uber and Lyft so that Taxis will face less price competition from ride-sharing companies. As always seems to happen in stories like this, the liberal local government doesn’t care if the consumer is forced to pay higher prices in order to advance their special interests’ agendas."

Notre Dame Snowflakes Melt in Anticipation of ‘Unsafe’ Mike Pence Address | Mediaite:
"On Monday, Notre Dame’s student newspaper, The Observer, spotlighted a protest campaign by left-wing undergraduates decrying the supposedly “racist, sexist, homophobic, [and] xenophobic” Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence, who is set to be the commencement speaker this year at the university.
The newspaper noted that the #NotMyCommencementSpeaker initiative was started by seniors Imanne Mondane and Jourdyhn Williams, who claim that Notre Dame’s “selection of Mike Pence … represents an endorsement of the values supported by President Donald Trump, which they said silences certain minority groups.”
Mondane played up that “for many people on our campus, it makes them feel unsafe to have someone who openly is offensive but also demeaning of their humanity and of their life and of their identity.”
Williams emphasized that “during his time as governor of Indiana and also during his campaign trail, along with Trump, he has made offensive statements towards minority groups…like women and African-Americans...”"

Odds are, if you're reading this in the United States, you live within a zone where U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents have the right to stop you and ask if you're a U.S. citizen or resident.
The Immigration nand Nationality Act gives the CBP authority to operate without a warrant within a "reasonable distance" of the U.S. border.
In 1953, the Justice Department defined "reasonable distance" as 100 miles—a number that has never been revisited since, even though it means a huge chunk of the country is now a "border zone" where U.S. citizens can be stopped and questioned."
