3. Chart of the Day I (above). The market for NYC taxi medallions has been very thin lately, with no sales or transfers at all in many recent months. But based on the sales that have taken place (including only one March sale for $241,000), the chart above shows that prices have fallen back to the January 2004 level. And compared to the peak of more than $1 million as recently as the summer of 2014, taxi medallion prices have tumbled in value by more than 75%. A tough economic lesson for the NYC taxi cartel that cartels aren’t forever when something better like Uber comes along….. but a great boon for consumers.

4. The Italian Taxi Cartel Prevails Though, as Uber is now banned in Italy for unfair competition. “Unfair” for whom? Well, taxi drivers of course, certainly not for consumers.

Note: I was in Rome last week and used Uber several times. UberX isn’t available so it’s only Uber Black Car, which are all black BMWs and Mercedes, and the drivers wear suits and ties. The cost is about the same as a taxi, but Uber is much more convenient (no cash involved) and the service is much better. Losing Uber in Italy will be a big loss for consumers."

"U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is withdrawing protections put in place by former President Barack Obama for students who have mismanaged or are defaulting on their college loans.
In a letter to Federal Student Aid (FSA) operating officer James Runcie, DeVos withdrew several policy memos, issued by former Obama education secretary John King, which concerned the servicing of student loans and how student loan debt is collected."

"...the organisation is having to turn away young applicants due to a lack of adult volunteers willing to teach them life skills such as how to tie knots, launch watercraft and work together to achieve a goal.
According to Bear Grylls, Chief Scout, the waiting list is now upwards of 51,000 young people (it was 35,000 this time last year), with an extra 17,000 volunteers needed to cope with the demand.
...Sadly, the truth is that volunteers aren’t stepping up for good reason.
...The second barrier is a more general red flag: the very real fear among many men who want to work with children that they will be branded a potential paedophile.
And this leads into a third factor.
Since 2007, it has been compulsory for girls to be admitted to the UK Scouts (no reciprocal agreements allow boys into the Brownies or Girl Guides)..."
