"California’s new governor has wasted little time continuing the state’s seemingly limitless expansion of government. 
Governor Gavin Newsom’s first budget proposal, published last week, suggests instituting a tax on drinking water in the name of cleaning up California’s water systems.
The “Environmental Protection” section of the 2019-2020 budget seeks to:

• establish a new special fund, 
• with a dedicated funding source from new water, fertilizer, and dairy fees, 
• to enable the State Water Resources Control Board to assist communities, 
• particularly disadvantaged communities, 
• in paying for the short-term and long-term costs of obtaining access to safe and affordable drinking water..."

"Mississippi, along with 46 other states, allows law enforcement to use civil forfeiture to take possession and ownership of property, even if they never convict the owner or file criminal charges. 
Thanks to its powers of confiscation, law enforcement in the Magnolia State has seized over $2.3 million worth of property over the past 18 months, including 54 vehicles, dozens of firearms, and several iPhones.
But a bill introduced last week would revive “administrative” forfeiture in Mississippi, a form of civil forfeiture that has even fewer safeguards for innocent property owners. 
If enacted, property seized under the state’s Uniform Controlled Substances Law and valued at under $20,000 could be permanently confiscated without Mississippians ever getting their day in court..."

"It’s become common to point out that those who most preach “tolerance” are often themselves highly “intolerant.”

But why is that?

As University of Texas professor and ethics expert J. Budziszewski explains, it may have a lot to do with tolerance’s character as a virtue.

Let me explain. 

Or rather, I’ll explain Budziszewski’s explanation from his excellent article, “The Illusion of Moral Neutrality.” 

This explanation involves three steps:
1) Tolerance is a virtue.
...Thus, for instance, we may tolerate someone voicing a wrong opinion because suppressing it: 

1) could lead to further, more insidious suppressions of free speech; 

2) could eliminate the chance for truth to shine through when pitted against error.

According to Budziszewski, the extremes to be avoided in exercising tolerance are “softheadedness”—“putting up with something we should suppress”—and “narrowmindedness”—“suppressing what we should put up with.”
