It was the hate crime of the century.
Or so some in the media appeared to think, judging by the condemnations and mass hysteria that followed initial footage of a group of Covington Catholic High School students — some of whom were wearing MAGA hats — supposedly harassing an older Native American man.
Except, what may have seemed to be one thing at first turned out to be something else altogether:

San Francisco — where drug addicts outnumber high school students - SFChronicle.com
"San Francisco has more drug addicts than it has students enrolled in its public high schools, the city Health Department’s latest estimates conclude.
There are about 24,500 injection drug users in San Francisco — that’s about 8,500 more people than the nearly 16,000 students enrolled in San Francisco Unified School District’s 15 high schools and illustrates the scope of the problem on the city’s streets..."

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) is pledging a gun control vote next week by exclaiming that the “right to be safe” trumps the right to bear arms.
He argues that the “right to be safe” supersedes “any other rights” possessed by Americans:

Ret. Army Colonel: Trump 'Needs to Act' on Authority to Declare Nat'l Emergency to Secure Border | Fox News Insider:

Image result for Real Us ConstitutionArmy Col. Douglas MacGregor (Ret.) said Friday that it'd be "absolutely" wise for President Trump to declare a national emergency in order to secure the U.S. border.
Trump said Friday that there is a "good chance" he'll make such a declaration if funding for a wall along the border cannot be agreed to.
Government funding is set to expire on Feb. 15, and lawmakers have until then to reach a border security agreement or be faced with another potential shutdown.
MacGregor said on Tucker Carlson Tonight that only Trump himself can address a potential declaration of emergency.
"He has the constitutional authority to do so," he said. "What he needs is an executive order."

I’ve been a senator for two weeks. Washington is worse than you’ve heard.
"I’ve been a U.S. senator for three weeks now, and I can tell you that reports of hate and incompetence in Washington are severely understated.
See the source imageThings are actually much worse than they appear.
One year ago, I called on Congress to make a simple deal on immigration requiring both Republicans and Democrats to do two things — compromise and respect the wishes of the American people.
This deal is so logical and so easy, even politicians in Washington should be able to grasp it.
But, as the events of the past few weeks have shown, they cannot.
...The truth is, the vast majority of Republicans are ready to make this deal, and are ready to provide a route for the dreamers.
But Democratic leaders are not ready to make this or any deal.
Sure, the Democrats have voiced support and cast votes for border security in the form of physical barriers in the past, but they won’t do so now because of their hatred of the president of the United States.
Hate is bad that way; it clouds your judgment.
As former senator Alan Simpson said at the funeral for former president George H.W. Bush, “Hatred corrodes the container it’s carried in.”
That’s the predicament that Democratic leaders find themselves in now.
They hate President Trump so much that they cannot behave in a rational manner..."

Blow off the Superbowl and read this-----Germany's Sixth Army in Stalingrad in World War II | HistoryNet

Germany's Sixth Army in Stalingrad in World War II | HistoryNet:
"...Stalingrad became a city of rubble, smoke and ash, where seeing and breathing became chores and movement invited anything from a sniper’s bullet to an artillery barrage. In one of modern history’s great examples of leadership, Chuikov kept his men fighting by the force of his character. He offered no rhetoric and made no promises. Instead, he projected a dour fatalism that linked the fate of the city and its garrison. German generals and colonels also led from the front, hoping that inspiration would make up for lost mobility. Compelled to substitute courage for skill and lives for maneuver, however, the German army in Stalingrad was ‘demodernizing,’ losing the capacity to fight anything but a close-quarters battle of attrition.

See the source imageGerman Chief of Staff Franz Halder warned of the risks and was dismissed on September 24. The message was clear. To meet Paulus’ calls for reinforcements in the face of mounting casualties, Weichs began stripping less active sectors north and south of Stalingrad of German formations and replacing them with Romanians and Italians. The gamble might have been justified if the German-tipped spearhead had somehow been able to recapture the initiative. Instead, the most capable German formations were being chewed up in fruitless attacks in Stalingrad. A Luftwaffe never designed for sustained operations was suffering from increasing maintenance problems. Artillery pieces were wearing out. Tanks were breaking down. The Soviets by contrast had succeeded in systematizing their reinforcement and resupply system across the Volga. More and more heavy guns were supporting the infantry.

On September 30, Hitler had announced Stalingrad’s imminent capture. Instead, it was the Germans who were pinned in place, able to drive forward only locally and episodically, with losses far out of proportion to either military or propaganda gains..."

The House bill, in other words, would prohibit ordinary Americans from purchasing any alternative health coverage, except for items such as "cosmetic surgery" or health services that government officials decide are not "medically necessary."
Not surprisingly, the Kaiser Family Foundation survey found that if the "Medicare for All" plan would "eliminate private insurance companies," respondents would oppose it by a margin of 58 to 37 percent.

"Progressives handle big issues the same way every time:
1. What? That's impossible. It wasn't in the New York Times or the Washington Post. You are an imbecile or a racist - or maybe an imbecilic racist - if you believe that!
2. The vast right-wing conspiracy is persecuting us. Yep. Just more right wing lies from the conservative-controlled media.
3. Silence...and we're gonna sue you if you keep talking about it.
4. Well, maybe it happened a little bit - but not enough to matter.
5. It happened - but it was so long ago, you can't expect us to care about something that happened THAT long ago. You guys really have to learn to let things go and move on. It's not healthy to hang on to the past.

“Being found with a straw can earn you an $800 fine.”
The Department of Energy and Environment in Washington, DC, now has someone to enforce the ban on plastic straws.
Will you sleep better tonight knowing this scourge upon society is being dealt with properly?
Fenit Nirappil reports at the Washington Post:
"On patrol with the enforcer of D.C.’s plastic-straw ban
Warning letters in hand, Zach Rybarczyk patrolled the food court at Union Station, looking for offenders.
Past Auntie Anne’s, past Johnny Rockets.
At Lotus Express, a Chinese food joint, Rybarczyk peeled the wrapper from a red straw and bent the end — the telltale giveaway.
Plastic.
Washington has become the latest city in a nationwide movement to ban plastic straws, and it’s up to Rybarczyk, an inspector for the D.C. Department of Energy and Environment, to enforce the new law..."

Meet the Philosopher Behind the Ideology of Anti-Fascists | Intellectual Takeout

Meet the Philosopher Behind the Ideology of Anti-Fascists | Intellectual Takeout
"In our last article on fascism, we promised we would explore the philosophical roots of Antifa in order to better understand how they justify the use of fascist tactics in the name of fighting it.
Antifa’s fascist tendencies are apparent by a simple surface diagnosis, but a deeper analysis reveals the bankrupt ideology that fuels the movement.

  • Defining Fascism

Defining fascism is no simple task.
In 2016, Merriam-Webster noted it was the most-searched term in its online dictionary.
There’s a reason for this: nobody really knows what fascism is.
Even among academics, there is little consensus.
See the source image“Scholars of fascism do not agree on what fascism means,” The Atlantic noted, “nor, for that matter, do fascist scholars.”
On one point, however, scholars are united.
A key component of fascism, one found in virtually every definition, is the idea that it

  • involves suppression of political opposition
  • and the use of “redemptive violence” against ideological rivals to expand influence and power.

Since Antifa routinely use violence and intimidation to prevent political opponents from assembling and publicly defend these tactics as a means to their ends, their fascist tendencies are self-evident.
To most, this connection is clear.
...the root of the modern anti-fascist ideology, and understanding the philosophical foundations illuminates why Antifa and others think they have license to behave like fascists in the name of fighting them."

Super Bowl-Bound L.A. Rams Are Building the NFL's Most Expensive Stadium, Without Public Money - Hit & Run : Reason.com:
  • There's no reason for taxpayers to finance athletic colosseums, and the Rams are providing a model for the next era of new stadiums.
"On Sunday evening, the Los Angeles Rams will battle the New England Patriots for National Football League supremacy—and they'll do in inside a brand new stadium in downtown Atlanta that cost Georgia taxpayers about $600 million to build (plus another $24 million for a useless pedestrian bridge nearby).
But back in Los Angeles, the Rams are demonstrating that it's possible to build a sporting cathedral without soaking the public with nine-figures of subsidies, taxpayer-funded bonds, or other corporate handouts.
The Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park figures to be the crown jewel of the NFL when it opens in 2020.
...The entire footprint of the site is three times larger than Disneyland, and with estimated construction costs nearing $5 billion, it's likely to be the most expensive stadium in American history.
Most remarkable of all, it's being privately funded..."

Crenshaw explained how the area is “divided up into two spots,” Brownsville and McAllen, before delving into the difference between the two.
