So what explains those men and women who repeatedly pursue a path that leads to pain and disappointment?

I got a glimpse of it once from another patient, a woman in her early 60s who complained about her ungrateful children and neglectful friends.
As she spoke, it was clear she felt that all the major figures in her life had done her wrong.
In fact, her status as an injured party afforded her a psychological advantage: she felt morally superior to everyone she felt had mistreated her.
This was a role she had no intention of giving up.

Today (3-23-2010) there will be a full board meeting of the Muskegon County Commission.
Among other items I found these most interesting:
1. I'm against ANY porky funding for this type of public event but especially when our financial future is so bleak.
But look at the funding for the Heights "Festival".
$3000.
Does the county board "spread the money around" to the other cities?
Or is the heights just "special"? Either way, it ought to stop

To grant the Chairperson of the Muskegon County Board of Commissioners and the County Clerk the authority to sign necessary contracts with Web Tecs, Inc., and Ottawa County.

They want to hire a kid and pay him about $5,700 but the worker's comp is $1,011 for this part timer!!!!!
No wonder jobs keep leaving our state.

3. Long range financial planning for the County. The county is broke. This is something EVERYONE needs to understand. This is BIG!
4. The county commissioner's travel budget. Just how much do they really spend? Who's the biggest spender?
5. County purchasing policy. They spend our money. How do they decide?

"Just as bank executives got bonuses despite taking on dangerous amounts of risk, regulators got taxpayer-funded bonuses despite missing or ignoring signs that the system was on the verge of a meltdown.
The bonuses were part of a reward program little known outside the government.
Some government regulators got tens of thousands of dollars in perks, boosting their salaries by almost 25 percent. Often, though, rewards amounted to just a few hundred dollars for employees who came up with good ideas.
During the 2003-06 boom, the three agencies that supervise most U.S. banks - the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC), the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) - gave out at least $19 million in bonuses, records show.
Nearly all that money was spent recognizing 'superior' performance.
The largest share, more than $8.4 million, went to financial examiners, those employees and managers who scrutinize internal bank documents and sound the first alarms.

Friday's game does indeed start at 7:20 p.m. Eastern, three cheers for the ink-stained wretches. Chris Allen will play, and Tom Izzo and Durrell Summers did meet Sunday.
Also: * The Spartans will essentially be playing to avenge Illinois on Friday. At least, that's how you could look at it considering New Mexico State is a "bid bandit" that stole an at-large slot away. I have to think Illinois was the last team left out, or awfully close to it. * The Aggies are fast, athletic and high-scoring, with six guys shooting above 33 percent from long range. And you may as well ignore everything this team did in the first half of the season. Athletic forwards Troy Gillenwater (6-8, 234, 14.4 ppg, 6.4 rpg) and Wendell McKines (6-6, 224, 10.8 ppg, 9.9 rpg) joined the team in February and December, respectively, after they gained academic eligibility. This is a totally different team with those two, and a huge reason the Aggies won the WAC tourney. * The Aggies also give it up on defense (77 points, 45 percent shooting) and have poor rebounding numbers. But again, they didn't have the 16 rebounds a game Gillenwater and McKines give them. * No tickets available for this one, it's sold out and MSU's 350 will go to the luminaries and top donors. However, I'm thinking that sellout has a lot to do with Gonzaga fans expecting the Zags to be there (instead of, say, Buffalo!) so if you can find a way out to Spokane, I'll bet you can find good seats at a good price outside the arena. * For Lansing-area residents, MSU's team banquet is Monday night, at Breslin for the first time. Admission is free, concessions open, doors open at 7:30 with the program starting at 7:45. You can sit in the green seats. * Arizona was not included, meaning MSU now has the third-longest NCAA streak with 13. Kansas is at 21 and Duke at 15. MSU's streak is the second-longest in Big Ten history. Indiana went to 18 straight from 1986 to 2003. * Izzo repeated that he will "mix it up" this week and look at lineup variations. Draymond Green, though, will stay in that sixth man role. Izzo said Kalin Lucas is out to prove something, in a good way.

"Fire services will be told to follow new 'non-bureaucratic' guidelines and take a 'sensible' approach to hazardous incidents under a new policy unveiled by the Health and Safety Executive.
HSE chiefs said the guidelines aimed to ensure firefighters could do their jobs properly without employers flouting safety legislation. Brigade unions welcomed the ruling, saying a balance had to be struck between safety rules and allowing fire crews to do their job.
But one MP called for a complete overhaul of safety guidelines and their impact on rescues after the conclusion of a fatal accident inquiry into the death of Alison Hume.
The 44-year-old, from Galston in Ayrshire, spent six hours at the bottom of a pit because Strathclyde Fire and Rescue was banned from using rope equipment to rescue members of the public.
Mrs Hume, who suffered head and chest injuries after plunging 60ft, died shortly after being brought to the surface from the disused shaft 120 yards from her home."
