They only became the dominant popular political and social movements because of cowardice by leading conservatives. It became the fashion of conservatives to keep quiet or gently embrace leftist causes in order to shut them up temporarily. In this way, the childish, wishful thinking of the left, and its many fraudulent opportunistic leaders, incrementally came to hold legitimacy and the moral high ground. It was the children of the greatest generation, those schooled on the dishonesty and danger of leftist politics, the people who heard William Buckley and Ronald Reagan and Ayn Rand who voluntarily let the left become ascendant. They, and many of us of the generation, failed to speak up, failed to defend, failed to object as our schools were taken over by Washington bureaucrats and our celebrity culture entertainment and news media slowly buried American values from view.
