Prof claims microaggressions disprove notion of 'meritocracy'
- An Associate Professor at the University of Rhode Island argues that microaggressions invalidate “meritocracy” and “equal-opportunity” for minorities.
- The same professor, Annemarie Vaccaro, also recently identified a brand new category of
microaggression that doesn't even require a person to say or do anything offensive.
Annemarie Vaccaro, who teaches about higher education, explained in an article published Tuesday that the experience of microaggressions “challenge[s] dominant ideologies of colorblindness, meritocracy, and equal opportunity” surrounding higher education.
...She maintains that “meritocracy and equal-opportunity” are ideologies that “ignore the differential treatment…experienced by individual women,” citing “microaggressions” that students of color “must overcome to be successful.”
Vaccaro, who also invented a brand new category of “invisibility microaggressions” in another article this week, began her research after being approached by a student named Chantel, who “offered to help recruit participants for a study” that would “document pervasive and covert racism at [her college] and convey women’s concerns to the administration.”...

"The National Science Foundation is spending over $130,000 on a study that asks four-year-olds about their "internal sense of gender identity."
A grant for a two-year study was awarded to the University of Washington this summer.
..."However, tests of these theories have been limited because, for most children, internal gender identity and environmental socialization substantially overlap, rendering it impossible to distinguish the relative impact of each factor on gender development."
The study will investigate whether gender theories, such as Gender Schema Theory that blames society on differences between genders, are sufficient for today's "wider range of human gender experiences," where there can be anywhere between 3, 37, and 58 genders..."

"Along the Santa Ana River in the shadow of Disneyland and Anaheim Stadium, scores of homeless people young and old have set up makeshift encampments of tarps and tents.
They have swelled in recent months and become the latest symbol of Orange County’s worsening homeless problem.
“Many times, things appear hopeless because we have nothing — not even restrooms,” said Tammy Schuler, 41, who shares her cluttered tarp-covered plot on the trail with her boyfriend and younger brother.
“We trade and try to help each other.
We have no choice.”
But this way of life has sparked a backlash from nearby residents as well as joggers and cyclists who say the camps have increased crime and blight.
Anaheim this week declared a state of emergency, clearing the way for the removal of hundreds of people living in a landscape dotted with trash and used hypodermic needles and lacking toilet facilities.
It’s the latest and perhaps boldest move to date to deal with the county’s homeless problem.
Earlier this summer, Anaheim removed bus benches across the street from Disneyland following complaints about the homeless population sleeping on them around the amusement park..."

"NEW YORK – Hundreds of students and parents gathered in front of New York City Hall last week to decry the $63 million “Remediation Tax” they were forced to pay after their public schools failed to prepare them for college.
“This ‘Remediation Tax’ affects 21,000 New York City college students who have graduated from city high schools but are unprepared for college-level coursework,” according to the StudentsFirstNY website.
“The $63 million Remediation Tax refers to the cost of remedial courses that college students are forced to take before they can enroll in classes that earn credit towards a degree.
This undue burden is imposed disproportionately on low- and middle-income New Yorkers who attend K-12 schools that fail to provide their graduates with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in college.”
The pro-charter school StudentsFirstNY published a reportThursday that shows the city school graduates spent an average of $3,000 a year to gain the basic knowledge they should have learned in high school.
“Students are forced to pick up the slack for a K-12 system that failed them — depleting whatever grants, scholarships, loans or personal resources they had planned to use to pay for college,” according to the report..."

(2) In fact, even on “liberal” campuses, most students don’t support this, they’re just bullied into keeping quiet.

Columbia University students recently voted against a proposal that would make all restrooms on a dorm-floor “gender inclusive.”
Students living in at least five of the elite school’s residence halls voted floor-by-floor to determine whether their male- and female-designed restrooms would be made “gender inclusive,” a practice made possible under a new Columbia University Residence Life Policy. . . .Krish Bhatt, president of the Columbia Queer Alliance, slammed the new policy as one that privileges the voices of “cisgender” students.
“The voices of cisgender residents, who likely outnumber transgender or gender nonconforming students and are more or less unimpacted by the decision, are being centered [in this decision],” Bhatt told The Spectator, adding that trans-students are not properly represented under such a “democratic fallacy.”
“While I understand the intention of this decision…this rule reinforces a democratic fallacy, where those who would benefit from a decision to designate bathrooms as gender-inclusive are not necessarily represented or represented to the extent of their need,” Bhatt elaborated.
