History’s Bad Ideas Are an Inspiration for Progressives - American Greatness

History’s Bad Ideas Are an Inspiration for Progressives - American Greatness
"What we now consider stupid and dangerous ideas of the past, progressives see as useful in the present.
Even liberal historians usually label as disastrous two decisions by the Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration:

  • the adoption of the Earl Warren-McClatchy newspaper inspired plan to intern Japanese-American citizens
  • and the Judicial Procedures Reform Bill of 1937—better known as FDR “court-packing scheme.”

The latter was a crazy scheme to remake the Supreme Court, given that Roosevelt wanted no more judicial interference in the implementation of the New Deal...
...The embarrassing plan properly died.
See the source imageBut progressives once again are advocating something like it, now that they fear Trump’s second Supreme Court nominee might cement a 5-4 hard conservative majority—and with a possible third appointment opening up in the next 30 months...
..Nullification Revisited
...The nihilistic idea of nullification helped spark the Civil War...
...The common themes in all these schemes are innate to progressivism.
To survive and spread, exalted righteousness always excuses tawdry methods, given the supposed ignorance and gullibility of the unenlightened.
Short-term expediency is well worth the goal of regaining power.
Any smell from low tactics later can be perfumed away—once power is back in the correct hands.
There is no such thing as a bad precedent that others less progressive, in Corcyraean or French Revolution fashion, might one day find useful in retaliation—given that the past is a mere construct that can be continually refashioned.
Today’s rhetoric can easily redefine yesterday’s reality.
Filibusters can be bad, then good, and soon bad again as the anointed need dictates, just like limits on speech and ideological or racial segregation.
We are in bad times, with much worse to come."

The Daddy Gap: 1 in 4 Fathers Don’t Live with Their Kids | Intellectual Takeout

The Daddy Gap: 1 in 4 Fathers Don’t Live with Their Kids | Intellectual Takeout
"Over the last 20 years, I’ve spent a good deal of time working with kids from the inner city.
Absent FathersThrough this interaction, I’ve grown accustomed to the fact that biological fathers are virtually non-existent in the homes of the children I know.
...a startling conversation with a handful of kids.
They explained, quite matter-of-factly, that the offspring of their fathers numbered in the upper teens.
I was amazed at the sheer number of siblings this gave each kid.
But when I pressed the issue further, I found they seemed oblivious to this fact.
They explained that they usually just viewed the children of their mother – many of whom were half-siblings – as their real siblings.
...So why did they view half-siblings by their mothers as closer kin?
Then I realized what was going on.
Their mothers and their children were present.
Their fathers ...were not.
And that made all the difference..."

What "action" they talkin' about?-----Anti-violence protesters shut down Dan Ryan: 'Today was the attention-getter, but now comes the action' - Chicago Tribune

Anti-violence protesters shut down Dan Ryan: 'Today was the attention-getter, but now comes the action' - Chicago Tribune
"The showdown between police and the organizers of a march against gun violence culminated Saturday in the shadow of the 76th Street overpass on the Dan Ryan Expressway.
For weeks, the Rev. Michael Pfleger said his intention was to shut down the busy South Side expressway for a demonstration designed to focus a spotlight on crime, joblessness and poverty plaguing city neighborhoods.
Chicago police urged him to use a neighborhood street instead of the interstate.
Illinois State Police threatened arrests.
...After about an hour, with protesters pressing toward the police line and traffic squeezing by in single file, officers agreed to close off the remainder of the lanes.
...The full blockade lasted about an hour, with northbound traffic at a standstill and southbound travelers gawking at the scene throughout the morning.
Authorities reported no arrests.
“We came out here to do one thing: to shut it down,” Pfleger said. “We came here to get their attention. Hopefully we got their attention. …
Today was the attention-getter, but now comes the action.”...

These numbers for ALL immigrants, not only illegals-----Wait–How Many Immigrants Are On Welfare Again? - Matt Vespa

Wait–How Many Immigrants Are On Welfare Again? - Matt Vespa
"This is the land of opportunity, and anyone who wants the come here can…legally.
That’s not the issue.
See the source imageFor the Trump White House, it’s been their stated position to shift our immigration policy toward allowing more high-skilled workers into this country.
As for the families of the low-skilled working immigration population in the country, 51 percent (76 percent counting immigrant-led households with children) are collecting some sort of check from our welfare services.
Is that good?
No.
Does that mean we shut it all down?
No.
...About 51% of immigrant-led households receive at least one kind of welfare benefit, including Medicaid, food stamps, school lunches and housing assistance, compared to 30% for native-led households, according to the report from the Center for Immigration Studies, a group that advocates for lower levels of immigration.
Those numbers increase for households with children, with 76% of immigrant-led households receiving welfare, compared to 52% for the native-born...."

CBS is positive?!-----Is President Trump already winning the trade war with China? - CBS News

Is President Trump already winning the trade war with China? - CBS News
"After months of threats and gamesmanship, President Trump's tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese industrial imports took effect a minute after midnight Friday.
It's the latest in a line of protectionism aimed at the U.S. trade deficit with China, which totaled nearly $600 billion in 2017, and includes tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum as well as items like washing machines and solar panels.
And much more has been threatened.
See the source imageMr. Trump said on Thursday that another $16 billion worth of tariffs against China are coming in two weeks -- and U.S. total alone could reach $550 billion in the next few months.
The actions appear to be having the intended effect, if at the cost of pushing up inflation (prices for washing machine in the U.S. have spiked 16% in recent months, for example).
The U.S. trade imbalance with China in May totaled $43.1 billion, down from the $47.2 billion posted in March; it's the smallest monthly deficit since October 2016 and caps the largest three-month reduction in 10 years..."

Looking For Evidence That Democrats Are The Real Racists?
"Modern-day liberals like to parade around as if they have the moral high-ground against President Donald Trump, whose alleged racism makes him a disgrace to the values of the United States.
But liberals most recently supported a candidate with a storied history of racist connections and statements: Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Because of her cozy relationship with the mainstream media, Clinton’s bigoted history was swept under the rug while she was on the campaign trail in 2016. Here are some of her greatest racist hits:
Here is Crooked H in her own words professing that former West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd to be her friend and mentor. Robert Byrd was an avowed racist and leader of the Ku Klux Klan who was celebrated as a hero by Democrats for years despite his history as a vile hatemonger.
Crooked H also admires Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger and received an award in her honor. Sanger’s diabolical plan – aided by politicians such as Hillary Clinton – to push abortion as eugenics has resulted in the slaughter of millions of black babies in the womb.
This is a holocaust that Adolf Hitler could have only dreamed of..."
