Europe’s Cyprus blunder

Europe’s Cyprus blunder | AEIdeas:
"European policymakers work in strange and mysterious ways.
Over the past year, they bent many rules and threw literally hundreds of billions of Euros at Greece to prevent that country from exiting the Euro.
They did so for fear that a Greek exit might cause contagion to other countries in the European periphery. And then over this last weekend, they chose to spook financial markets and risk the very contagion that they sought to avoid in the Greek case, by demanding that as part of its bailout package Cyprus imposes a tax on bank deposits."

Ken Braun: A gun control proposal that everyone should support

Ken Braun: A gun control proposal that everyone should support | MLive.com:
"required a twice-yearly report from every SWAT team in Michigan.
They would need to list the location of each raid, the legal reason for it, the details of what happened, whether shots were fired, what was seized and who was arrested. A similar law in Maryland revealed that 4.5 homes per day were being raided.
McMillin introduced the bill following the death of a 7-year old Detroit girl who was killed during a Detroit police SWAT raid on her home.
The only weapon fired was from the gun of one of the officers, who claimed (falsely) that the girl’s aunt reached for his weapon.
Yet his only shot struck the little girl in the neck.
The bill received only two co-sponsors, both Detroit Democrats.
It never got out of committee, allegedly due to strong resistance from law enforcement."

Hillary Clinton Endorses Same-Sex Marriage

Hillary Clinton Endorses Same-Sex Marriage - NYTimes.com:
"Mrs. Clinton’s announcement represents a switch in position; as a presidential candidate in 2008, she explicitly opposed same-sex marriage, saying that she favored civil unions but that decisions about the legality of marriage should be left to the states.
(Until last year, President Obama took that position as well; the president now favors a right to marriage for gay couples.)"

Ferry service fights that sinking feeling

Ferry service fights that sinking feeling | Matier And Ross | an SFGate.com blog:
"The much-heralded ferry service between Oakland and South San Francisco — launched just nine months ago at a cost to taxpayers of more than $42 million — is taking on water fast.
The service, which operates seven trips each weekday, carried an average of just 131 total riders a day in the last week of February.
That’s less than a third of the ridership that officials were counting on during the ferries’ first year on the bay.
And yet, rather than retrenching, the ferry operators have big plans for expansion.
You can find out about those here."

White House Announces Easter Egg Roll May Be Cancelled, After Labeling Concerns Ridiculous Last Week

White House Announces Easter Egg Roll May Be Cancelled, After Labeling Concerns Ridiculous Last Week - By Andrew Johnson - The Corner - National Review Online: "
Last Friday, White House press secretary Jay Carney lashed out at a Fox News anchor for asking whether the White House’s annual Easter Egg Roll might go the way of its cancelled tours.
Carney told Jenna Lee that the event wasn’t at risk:
“Well actually, Jenna, again, if you did a little reporting . . . it’s paid for by the sale of those eggs that come out, as well as from donations on the outside, so it’s a totally different budget.
These are apples and oranges.”
But now the White House is warning that this year’s egg roll may be nixed by the sequester as well.
According to Politico, Capitol Hill offices received an e-mail today with tickets to the event that mentioned it could be cancelled “due to funding uncertainty surrounding the Executive Office of the President and other federal agencies.”

A gun control proposal that everyone should support

Ken Braun: A gun control proposal that everyone should support | MLive.com:
"By one estimate, cited by the Cato Institute, American citizens have their homes and private property invaded 40,000 times per year by their government’s use of para-military police raids.
There are obviously cases where SWAT teams are sent after clearly dangerous and violent criminals that need to spend many years in a cage.
But these home invasions are too often used against non-violent drug offenders, sometimes in situations - such as the Torres matter - where there isn’t even a clear crime being committed.
Most alarmingly, they can also happen when bad information and mistakes send cops to the wrong doors."
