Thefts at Bangor Community Garden prompt addition of surveillance — Homestead — Bangor Daily News — BDN Maine:
BANGOR, Maine — Jerry Ledwith has no problem giving away a tomato to someone who needs it.
But he does have an issue with folks coming in and taking without permission what he and his fellow gardeners are growing in their plots at the Bangor Community Garden.
“Listen, if you want a tomato, come see me — I’ll give you one. But don’t come and rip off premature vegetables that aren’t even ready to be eaten,” Ledwith said. “We put a lot of effort into this stuff, and I just think it’s a shame that people come out and steal from you.”
Tracy Willette, Bangor Parks and Recreation director, said this theft isn’t uncommon, given the department has received theft complaints each year since the garden opened in 2011. Parks and Rec runs the community garden.
But this summer the thefts have been more common than in past summers..."

Young people on the left are much more inclined to say that they are engaged in politics as an X, concerned about other Xs and those issues touching on X-ness. And they are less and less comfortable with debate.

Over the past decade a new, and very revealing, locution has drifted from our universities into the media mainstream: Speaking as an X…This is not an anodyne phrase. It sets up a wall against any questions that come from a non-X perspective. Classroom conversations that once might have begun, I think A, and here is my argument, now take the form, Speaking as an X, I am offended that you claim B. What replaces argument, then, are taboos against unfamiliar ideas and contrary opinions.

Moments later, the crowd pulled on the rope and the statue fell.  One man quickly ran up and spat on the statue and several others began kicking it.

It’s not clear where law enforcement officers were during the protest.

But Klan delegates defeated the platform plank in a series of floor debates.
To celebrate, tens of thousands of hooded Klansmen rallied in a field in New Jersey, across the river from New York City. 
This event, known subsequently as the “Klanbake”, was also attended by hundreds of Klan delegates to the convention, who burned crosses, urged violence and intimidation against African Americans and Catholics, and attacked effigies of Smith.

A new paper compares how people considered to have high and low nomophobic tendencies perceive and value their smartphones.

In the pay-to-publish journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, Seunghee Han and Jang Hyun Kim, PhD, Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, Republic of Korea and Ki Joon Kim, PhD, City University of Hong Kong, Kowloon, created a model that they say has identified a link between factors such as personal memories and user's greater attachment to their smart phones, leading to nomophobia and a tendency to phone proximity-seeking behavior.
