Chicago To Shutdown Composting Business Because Regulations Don't Cover Worms - Slashdot

Nature's Little Recyclers is a father-son business that does composting on empty residential lots, transforming organic waste into nutrient-rich soil. Last year, the business's worms processed 10 tons of banana peels and cups from the Chicago Marathon that would otherwise have gone to a landfill. But Chicago officials are going to shut the business down -- and not because the city doesn't think composting is a good thing (the city's sustainability website directs people to Nature's Little Recyclers). Rather, the city's business and zoning regulations weren't designed to accommodate small and innovative operations like Nature's Little Recyclers.
"None of these operations met the criteria for garden composting or an on-site organic waste composting operation," said Anel Ruiz, spokesperson for the Department of Public Health, in a statement to Block Club Chicago, adding "Further, these sites are not properly zoned for commercial composting."
But another perspective was shared by lawyer Amy Hermalik, associate director of the Institute for Justice Clinic on Entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago.
"The city will unofficially imply there's wiggle room, saying it only enforces certain ordinances against 'bad operators,' but that leaves businesses subject to shifting political winds or personal whims, Hermalik said.
'They [the city] have an incredible amount of power to do as they please.'"

In prehistoric times, back about 25,000 years ago, when starvation was the norm, the most revered female figures were fat, really, really fat, as you can see from these pictures of several Paleolithic Venuses.

The factory workers’ pallor was so unhealthy it could never be mistaken for the pearlescent glow of the idle rich.
Things changed, though, when young women left dusty, unhealthy factories and moved into offices. Suddenly, they too had white complexions.
And because they were earning decent money, they could afford clothes that, at least from a distance, aped their “betters.”
So what happened?
The rich suddenly discovered sun bathing
...The way I see it (and I’ll just remind you that I’m being tongue-in-cheek here), we’re being prepared for another division between the elite and the rest of us.
...I call it the hungering.
This hungering will end up with ordinary people in America being very skinny.
So if the riffraff are skinny, what will the next generation of models look like?
...To say that the above young women are reminiscent of the Paleolithic Venuses is not meant to be fat shaming, because I’m not making any judgment about their health, beauty, sexual desirability, or anything else.
It’s just a statement — and a reminder that the elite always likes to keep itself separate from the rest of us.

When he got outside he saw the shooter dressed in armor and a balaclava face mask and he saw two people who had already been shot lying on the ground.
The shooter was trying to retrieve another gun from his car so Aziz threw the credit card machine at him.
The attacker pulled out a gun and started shooting at Aziz who was able to take cover behind another car.
“And I was screaming to the guy ‘Come, I’m here,’ I tried to put his focus on me,” Aziz said.
The shooter went inside and began shooting while Aziz was outside: “And I screamed at him ‘Come on I’m outside, come on I’m outside.’ I [was] swearing at him and everything.”
He cursed at Aziz and drove away.
Aziz chased him down the street with the empty shotgun.

There was no ammunition left for the shotgun but picked it up anyway. The shooter went inside and began shooting while Aziz was outside: “And I screamed at him ‘Come on I’m outside, come on I’m outside.’ I [was] swearing at him and everything.”

He ran and I chased him.
I chased him [and] he run to his car and sit in the driver’s seat.
When he sit on the driver’s seat I didn’t know if he had another gun or things.
He might get another gun to shoot me.

Aziz clarified that when the car window broke the shooter may have believed he’d been shot at.
That was enough confrontation for the shooter. He cursed at Aziz and drove away.

To suggest you have the solution to the eternal problem of evil in the form of addressing your pet peeve or of blaming and attacking your political opponents is disgraceful.
It is to use the bodies of the slain for a soap box.
It degrades you and insults the victims.
It is likewise absurd to extrapolate from the murderer’s philosophy in order to condemn philosophies that may have something in common with it.
There are psychopaths on the right and left.
...I think the Democratic party has lost its collective mind.
But I am more than willing to stipulate that Ted Cruz and Chuck Schumer, Jim Jordan and Nancy Pelosi can all agree that murdering innocents at their prayers is bad.
This is not where our disagreements lie.
