Kagan warns Supreme Court will lose legitimacy if it strays from ‘public sentiment’
"The Supreme Court may lose its legitimacy if it strays too far from public sentiment, according to Justice Elena Kagan.
Kagan, a liberal judge appointed to the court in 2010 by former President Barack Obama, tied the standing of the court to its “connection to the public,” noting it could be dangerous if people continue to view Supreme Court justices as increasingly partisan, likely an allusion to the recent contentious court term that saw the overturning of Roe v. Wade and an expansion of gun rights..."

Grand jury indicts "undocumented" man in rape of 9-year-old girl

Thursday indicted an undocumented immigrant on two counts of rape for allegedly sexually assaulting and impregnating a young girl, who was then forced to cross state lines to seek an abortion in Indiana, where the procedure is still legal.

The indictment revealed that the alleged rape victim was just 9 years old when she was assaulted — contrary to previous reports saying she was 10 at the time she had her pregnancy terminated.

The girl’s case became a lightning rod in the national debate over abortion rights, with President Biden publicly invoking the child’s plight to highlight the detrimental effects of the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Nolte: Alleged Lee Zeldin Attacker Already Released Without Bail
  • The man accused of attacking Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) with a sharp weapon has already been released back into society.
Zeldin, the Republican nominee for governor, was campaigning in Perinton, New York, Thursday night when the suspect, identified as 43-year-old David G. Jakubonis, walked across the stage, stopped in front of Zeldin, and appeared to thrust a weapon towards Zeldin’s neck.
Zeldin blocked the first thrust.
Then the suspect was tackled.
  • “His fingers were like two finger holes in the blade and lunged at the congressman. And Congressman Zeldin blocked the first lunge. And then as he tried to lunge again, I grabbed him from behind and tackled him down to the ground and held him on the ground.”..."

"I heard about President Biden's COVID diagnosis and found it interesting that contact tracing was unable to discover the source of his infection.
If contact tracing can't provide clarity for the most protected, observed and scheduled human on the planet it leads to a bit of humility when one thinks about applying it to an entire population.
I wonder if all the emphasis on it during 2020 overestimated its efficacy or underestimated the airborne virus.

Manger condemned the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia for not criminally charging the production crew despite the ample evidence showing they broke the law.

"It is unfortunate that despite all of the evidence the Department presented, including that the group or its leader had been told several times that they could not be in the buildings without an escort, that the U.S. Attorney’s office declined to prosecute any members of the group for Unlawful Entry," Manger said.

When the Soviet Union Chose the Wrong Side on Genetics and Evolution | Science| Smithsonian Magazine
  • "Science cannot long remain unfettered in a social system which seeks to exercise control over the whole spiritual and intellectual life of a nation. The correctness of a scientific theory can never by adjudged by its readiness to give the answers desired by political leadership". --Charles A. Leone, "Lysenko versus Mendel," Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science, 1952.
Whenever I hear that some political figure has attempted to legislate science to suit the convenience of their political beliefs—and this happens fairly frequently, even here in the United States—I think back to biology class and the story of Trofim Lysenko in the early years of the Soviet Union.

Lysenko, Joseph Stalin's director of biology, was head of a group of animal and plant breeders who rejected the science of genetics...
Michurinist biology, which later morphed into Lysenkoism, was convenient for a Soviet government trying to engineer the perfect social utopia. Under this system, they thought they could quickly force plants and animals, even the Soviet people, into forms that could serve practical requirements...

Lysenko came to dominate Soviet biology with a 1948 speech—prepared in part by Stalin himself—in which Lysenko denounced Mendel and declared proponents of such science to be enemies of the people. Scientists who disagreed with Lysenko's theories were purged—some were sent to the gulags while others simply disappeared..."
