Xi smiles-----Cal Poly fires chemistry lecturer after raising concerns about foreign hires | The College Fix

California Polytechnic State University reportedly pushed a chemistry lecturer out of her job after she raised concerns about foreign hires and learning assistants in general, and their inability to set up a safe laboratory. - Jeanine Yuen - Northwestern University
  • Learning assistants frequently arrived unprepared, violated lab safety rules, and lacked basic training, the lecturer alleged.
  • This created unsafe classroom conditions for her large freshman labs of up to 64 students and meant first-year students were exposed to improper laboratory practices...
Reports to the chemistry department and the school’s health and safety team went nowhere.
However, the department chair at the time did accuse the lecturer of an inappropriate “tone” in a performance review...
  • University boots Americans, brings in foreigners...
The chemist said Cal Poly relies heavily on seemingly higher-paid, non-tenure lecturers while claiming it cannot find enough American workers to fill teaching positions.
  • The school offers a relatively low wage to American workers for the cost of living in the area.
  • However, it offers higher wages to foreign workers...
Replacing experienced, non-tenure-track U.S. lecturers with entry-level H-1B hires does not address a labor shortage; it replaces incumbent faculty with workers who carry less institutional risk.”

Big Costs, Little Benefit: MI Healthy Climate plan will cost Michiganders $386B by 2050

Customers will cough up an extra $228.83 per monthly utility bill
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s MI Healthy Climate Plan will cost an estimated $386 billion by 2050, according to a new report published by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.
  • Whitmer’s plan could cost an extra $2,746 per energy customer annually, or an additional $228.83 per monthly utility bills, the report warns.
  • It also raises the specter of days-long blackouts.
Michigan’s Expensive Net-Zero Gamble” comes on the heels of Whitmer saying she would lower the cost of living for state residents...

Trump admin 'cleans house,' busts 50 suspected fugitive felons living in taxpayer-funded housing in just one Ohio city | Blaze Media

A law enforcement operation found that more than 50 fugitives with felony warrants were taking advantage of taxpayer-funded housing in Columbus, Ohio. U.S. Marshals partnered with agents from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office on "Operation Clean House," targeting suspects living in HUD housing.

Democrats' ICE hysteria hides their deepest midterm fears - Victor Davis Hanson

Behind this stale Democrat boilerplate lies a deep fear that the Nietzschean Trump, just as he beat all their lawfare ambushes, will also do the impossible and avoid losing Congress in November.
Their Trump obsessions result in three now well-worn strategies.
  • The first, of course, is still more chaos in America’s streets...
  • Second, Democrats seize on every Trump art-of-the-deal excess or coarse putdown...
  • Third, Democrats still rely on their ossified partnerships with the media, academia and popular culture to mouth the old talking points...
Behind this stale Democrat boilerplate lies a deep fear that the Nietzschean Trump, just as he beat all their lawfare ambushes, will also do the impossible and avoid losing Congress in November.
And they should fear.
No one can now stop
  • massive deregulation,
  • new tax cuts and incentives,
  • recalibrated tariffs,
  • unprecedented foreign investment,
  • record energy development and
  • emerging technologies.
All that’s needed before the midterms is more focus on the
  • current GDP boom,
  • lower inflation and
  • increased purchasing power — all in contrast to Biden’s economic disaster...

Michigan Public Service Commission rejects U.P. company’s energy plan

A leading employer in the Upper Peninsula fears significant economic harm from the mandate, as do lawmakers from the area. - Jamie A. Hope
  • Michigan Public Act 233 of 2023, enacted by a Democratic trifecta, requires utility companies to get 100% of their power from so-called green energy sources by 2040.
If the state does not change its renewable energy law, the Upper Michigan Energy Resources will have to scrap some RICE generators (Peaker power plants provide power when "green" energy like solar/wind can't. During night, snow, light/too much wind) that it uses to produce electricity but has not yet paid for...
The utility and its customers will be obligated to pay off the RICE generators until 2049, even if they are unusable.
Cleveland Cliffs, a large employer in the U.P., has said it may cease operations at its open-pit Tilden Mine (iron mine) south of Ishpeming if electricity prices soar, as CapCon previously reported.
The mine employs about 900 people and had a total economic impact of $452 million as of December 2017, according to a 2018 Cleveland Cliffs fact sheet...

Not to worry—Trump did not post a racist video about the Obamas

Having said that, the claim is going viral on the left, so you need to have your facts lined up to challenge your TDS-suffering friends and acquaintances. - Andrea Widburg
  • The problem with the video Trump posted is that it’s a dead certainty that he reposted it without bothering to watch the whole thing.
  • Had he watched it to the end, he would have known that there was a problem.
You see, the video is a screen recording captured by an unknown third party.
And what the unknown third party was also clearly unaware of (or, possibly, didn’t care about) was the automated beginning of another, entirely unrelated video.
So, what you get after 58 seconds of a serious video about a serious topic is two seconds of an automatically played video showing Michelle and Barack Obama’s heads attached to the cartoon bodies of simian creatures. (Apes? Chimps? I have no idea.)
You can see for yourself what happened:
As I can attest from my slow learning curve in making video-podcasts, failing to clip the end of a screen recording is a classic amateur mistake...

The Lie of Outsourced Virtue - by Michael Smith

Sympathy Observes, Empathy Feels—Only Compassion Acts - Michael Smith

In thinking about the concept of “suicidal empathy,” I’ve found myself reflecting more broadly on the human condition.
That reflection keeps circling back to three words we often treat as interchangeable, even though they require distinctly different levels of involvement and produce radically different outcomes:
sympathy, empathy, and compassion.
  • Sympathy is feeling for someone. You recognize hardship from a safe distance and feel pity.
  • Empathy goes further—it is feeling with someone. You step into their emotional experience and share their pain.
  • Compassion is the synthesis of both. It combines understanding suffering with a willingness to relieve it.
Put simply: sympathy observes, empathy experiences, and compassion acts.

This is not merely semantic. It is a progression that any healthy civil society must complete if it hopes to solve real problems, moving from awareness, to emotion, to responsibility...

It's official!

6 Things I Learnt From Watching Chris Uhlmann’s ‘The Real Cost of Net Zero’

Australians are already feeling the cost of the ‘renewable’ transition, but there are far higher costs to come, according to Chris Uhlmann’s new documentary ‘The Real Cost of Net Zero’. - Kurt Mahlburg
Australia could have some of the cheapest energy in the world, yet our power bills rank among the most expensive...
  • ...I normally commentate on issues more closely connected to family, marriage, life and freedom. But at a time when families can barely afford to pay their power bills — and the price of Australian energy is contributing to a historic cost-of-living crisis — all of these precious values come under threat...
