Staff working at the Berlaymont building received a text at midday, reading: “BERL -- URGENT -- Due to extreme weather conditions, forced shut down of air cooling system from floor 1 to 7 for the rest of the day.”

The 13-story building is home to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, her 26 commissioners and about 3,000 staff. Von der Leyen works on the 13th floor, and most of her commissioners’ offices are housed on floors eight or above...

As for our professional, independent civil service — it is to laugh. 

The civil service isn’t independent: 

• It happily does the bidding of Democratic presidents. 
• It’s just partisan, in that it does its best to stall and undermine the work of Republican presidents. (By now we’ve all seen the emails.)

But more importantly, the proof of the pudding is in the eating: 

We’ve run America with and without a “professional, independent civil service,” and 

• there was more trust in government — and 
• better execution of policy — 

before the creation of the civil service than after...

This furtive cooperation, and not Fauci, is the crux of the issue generated by the released documents. The public has a right to know about clandestine meetings between public health officials and the CIA. And if true, it is not out of the realm of possibility that there was self-serving connivance between Fauci and the agency, or that a self-justifying information loop kept the American public at bay. What would the public reaction be to that? Especially if the COVID origin turned out to be a preventable occurrence.
