SEPTEMBER 11, 2014

SO NOW IT’S THE 13TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11. Back then, InstaPundit was shiny and new new. Now it’s not, and some people have been warning of “blogger burnout.” But I’m still here. On prior 9/11 anniversaries, I’ve given shooting lessons to a Marine, I’ve taken the day off from blogging, and I’ve even gone to a Tea Party with Andrew Breitbart.

This year, as in most past years, it’ll be blogging as usual. And here’s a link to my original 9/11 coverage — just scroll on up. At this late date, I don’t have much new to say on 9/11. But these predictions held up pretty well. Which is too bad.

The picture above is by my cousin-in-law Brad Rubenstein, taken from his apartment that day. You might also want to readthis piece by James Lileks.

And here’s a passage from Lee Harris’s Civilization And Its Enemies.

Forgetfulness occurs when those who have been long inured to civilized order can no longer remember a time in which they had to wonder whether their crops would grow to maturity without being stolen or their children sold into slavery by a victorious foe.

They forget that in time of danger, in the face of the Enemy, they must trust and confide in each other, or perish.

They forget, in short, that there has ever been a category of human experience called the Enemy. And that, before 9/11, was what had happened to us. The very concept of the Enemy had been banished from our moral and political vocabulary. An enemy was just a friend we hadn’t done enough for — yet. Or perhaps there had been a misunderstanding, or an oversight on our part — something that we could correct. And this means that that our first task is that we must try to grasp what the concept of the Enemy really means.

The Enemy is someone who is willing to die in order to kill you. And while it is true that the Enemy always hates us for a reason — it is his reason, and not ours.
I’ve mentioned it before, but it bears repeating today.

Now, of course, with the Syria debacle last year, leading into this year’s Iraq rerun, it seems like we’ve gone from tragedy to farce and back to tragedy. Are you feeling the hope and change? I’m not.

God bless America. We need it.

"Wonder drug" gotta few glitches------Teens who Smoke Cannabis Daily 'Seven Times More Likely to Commit Suicide'

Teens who Smoke Cannabis Daily 'Seven Times More Likely to Commit Suicide':
"Teenagers who start smoking cannabis daily before the age of 17 are seven times more likely to commit suicide, a study has found.
According to the paper, published in the Lancet Psychiatry journal, youths who smoke marijuana on a daily basis are also 60% less likely to finish high school.
Researchers led by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at the University of New South Wales analysed results of three large, long-running studies from Australia and New Zealand involving nearly 3,800 people.
They examined the connections between the frequency of cannabis use before age 17 - ranging from never to daily - and seven developmental outcomes assessed up to age 30, including frequency of suicide attempts, high-school completion and attainment of university degree by age 25.
...The findings showed a link between a considerable use of cannabis and a high risk of suicide as well as poor educational outcomes.
Researchers also found that teenagers who use cannabis very often are at an eight times greater risk of using other illegal drugs in their twenties, and they can also develop an addiction to marijuana."

L.A. teachers demand 17.6% raise despite 68% graduation rate

L.A. teachers demand 17.6% raise despite 68% graduation rate - EAGnews.org:
"LOS ANGELES – Teachers in the nation’s second largest school system are angling for a massive pay raise based on assertions from union officials that the district can afford it.
But Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy contends the 17.6 percent raise proposed by United Teachers Los Angeles would bankrupt LA schools, and board members have offered a series of smaller raises, instead, the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
Deasy contends that even the smaller raises – 2 percent now and a 2 percent bonus later in the year, as well as another 2 percent in 10 months and 2.5 percent in 2016 – will put the district in a projected $100 million budget hole, according to the news site.

UTLA President Alex Caputo-Pearl told board members in a letter this week “It’s clear that the money is there to take care of these (union) bargaining proposals,” which include the 17.6 percent teacher raise, a reduction in class sizes – essentially hiring more educators – and discussions with district officials about teacher evaluations.
Currently, “the average weighted salary of elementary and secondary school teachers in 2013-14 came to $70,000, while benefits such as health care and pension brought the budget figure up to $96,176 per year on average,” according to budget figures cited by the Daily News."

Tic Tacs Outlawed in Schools Thanks to Michelle Obama

Tic Tacs Outlawed in Schools Thanks to Michelle Obama:
"What harm could there be in a tiny little breath mint, right? How many calories could it possibly have that would put it on the Michelle Obama hit list for removal from schools? If you thought that breath mint was innocent, think again. According to Michelle Obama’s healthy lunch and snacks standards, the Tic Tac doesn’t fit the bill and is thereby outlawed."

A day to be proud…

A day to be proud… | Power Line:

"Rescorla died a hero’s death saving his charges at Morgan Stanley in the south tower of the World Trade Center on 9/11.
Rescorla was head of security for the company; he directed the evacuation in which he had long drilled the company’s WTC employees.
Using a bullhorn, he shepherded his charges into the tower’s one usable fire escape and exhorted them that it was “a day to be proud to be an American.”
The book closes with the words of Hill, the man who remained Rescorla’s best friend until his death.

His haunting words pay tribute to Rescorla:
"One of my life’s biggest regrets is that I couldn’t have been with Rick at the moment of his great challenge and crisis of his life.
Then again, maybe it was so destined, because if I didn’t survive, there would be nobody left to tell the story.
Kipling wrote that “all men should count with you, but none too much.”
I failed there.
Rick counted as the world to me.
Somebody cautioned that if a person or thing means the world to you, and you lose that person or thing, then you have lost the world.
I lost the world when Rick died."

American madrassas----Sixth Graders Asked To Compare Bush And Hitler For Homework

Sixth Graders Asked To Compare Bush And Hitler For Homework | The Daily Caller:
A sixth-grade teacher at a Washington, D.C. public school will apologize to students but otherwise is receiving no punishment whatsoever for sending students home with an assignment this week instructing them to use a Venn diagram to compare former President George W. Bush and Adolf Hitler.
The teacher is employed at McKinley Tech Middle School, a taxpayer-funded school in the Northeast quadrant of the nation’s capital, NBC Washington reports.
The Washington Times obtained a copy of the assignment, which innovatively melds together the Holocaust and the Iraq war.
“Now that we have read about two men of power who abused their power in various ways, we will compare and contrast them and their actions,” the directions explain.
“Please refer to your texts, ‘Fighting Hitler — A Holocaust Story’ and ‘Bush: Iraq War Justified Despite No WMD’ to compare and contrast former President George W. Bush and Hitler.
We will use this in class tomorrow for an activity!”

Ignorance at Its Best By Tammy Derouin

LIBERTY REVIEW:
"....A picture of a man in Ferguson, MO is circulating online.
He is wearing a black T-shirt which bears an eerie resemblance to the ISIS flag.
His T-shirt states that he would rather be picked up by ISIS than the Ferguson Police Department. Now there’s ignorance at its best.
This man was probably born in the U.S., which means he was born into freedom.
He is free to live and believe as he wishes, provided it doesn’t harm anyone.
He lives in a country which acknowledges God given rights as stated in the Bill of Rights.
He has a Constitution, which was drafted to protect the liberties of the people, while keeping the government small and under control.
He also has a Declaration of Independence signed by those who were willing to die for their belief that man is allowed, not by a government but by nature’s law, to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
If the Obama regime has truly convinced this man he would be better off with ISIS, I would have no problem seeing his desire come true.

SCIENTISTS: 'EXTREME' SOLAR STORM HEADING TO EARTH

News from The Associated Press:
""There's been a giant magnetic explosion on the sun," Berger said. "Because it's pointed right at us, we'll at least catch some of the cloud" of highly energized and magnetized plasma that can disrupt Earth's magnetic sphere, which sometimes leads to temporary power grid problems.
Forecasters don't yet know when Wednesday's solar storm will arrive here and which part of the planet will be facing the sun and bear the brunt of the effects. It could arrive as early as Thursday morning or may take a few days.
Berger said scientists will have a better idea after they get more satellite data.
The first part of the storm, which arrives in only a few minutes, has already affected radio transmissions.
It can also damage satellites.
The flare is considered "extreme" on forecasters' scale, but just barely so, Berger said"
