Read it all and never forget------Captain's Log: Fallen Soldier

Captain's Log: Fallen Soldier:
Fallen Soldier
"Another 4th of July is here and all across the nation, millions of us will celebrate in thousands of different ways.
Our military members around the world will miss out on hometown celebrations, instead, performing the duties assigned to them.
This story is in honor of them.

As a commercial pilot, I too see the effects of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Last month I showed up to start a trip and was approached by a gate agent.
“Captain, good morning, I wanted to inform you that we have H.R. on this flight”, she said.
H.R. stands for human remains.
“Are they military?”, I asked.
“Yes”, she said.
“Is there an escort?”, I asked.
“Yes, I already assigned him a seat”, she said.
“Would you please tell him to come to the flight deck, you can board him early”, I said.
A short while later, a young army sergeant entered the flight deck.  He was the image of the perfectly dressed soldier.  He introduced himself and I asked him about his soldier.  The escorts of these fallen soldiers talk about them as if they are still alive and with us.  “My soldier is on his way back to Virginia”, he said.  He proceeded to answer my questions, but offered no words on his own.  I asked him if there was anything I could do for him and he said no.  I told him that he has the toughest job in the military and that I appreciated the work that he does for the families of our fallen soldiers.  The first officer and I got up out of our seats to shake his hand.  He left the flight deck to find his seat.

We completed our preflight checks, pushed back and performed an uneventful departure.  About 30 minutes into our flight I received a call from the lead flight attendant in the cabin.  “I just found out the family of the soldier we are carrying, is onboard”, he said.  He then proceeded to tell me that the father, mother, wife and 2-year-old daughter were escorting their son, husband, and father home.  The family was upset because they were unable to see the container that the soldier was in before we left.  We were on our way to a major hub at which the family was going to wait 4 hours for the connecting flight home to Virginia. The father of the soldier told the flight attendant that knowing his son was below him in the cargo compartment and being unable to see him was too much for him and the family to bare.  He had asked the flight attendant if there was anything that could be done to allow them to see him upon our arrival.  The family wanted to be outside by the cargo door to watch the soldier being taken off the airplane.  I could hear the desperation in the flight attendants voice when he asked me if there was anything I could do.  “I’m on it”, I said.  I told him that I would get back to him.

Airborne communication with my company normally occurs in the form of email like messages.  I decided to bypass this system and contact my flight dispatcher directly on a secondary radio. There is a radio operator in the operations control center who connects you to the telephone of the dispatcher.  I was in direct contact with the dispatcher.  I explained the situation I had onboard with the family and what it was the family wanted.  He said he understood and that he would get back to me.
Two hours went by and I had not heard from the dispatcher.  We were going to get busy soon and I needed to know what to tell the family.  I sent a text message asking for an update.  I saved the return message from the dispatcher and this following is the text.
“Captain, sorry it has taken so long to get back to you.  There is policy on this now and I had to check on a few things.  Upon your arrival a dedicated escort team will meet the aircraft.  The team will escort the family to the ramp and planeside.  A van will be used to load the remains with a secondary van for the family.  The family will be taken to their departure area and escorted into the terminal where the remains can be seen on the ramp.  It is a private area for the family only.  When the connecting aircraft arrives, the family will be escorted onto the ramp and planeside to watch the remains being loaded for the final leg home.  Captain, most of us here in flight control are veterans.  Please pass our condolences on to the family, thanks.”

I sent a message back telling flight control thanks for a good job.  I printed out the message and gave it to the lead flight attendant to pass on to the father.  The lead flight attendant was very thankful and told me, “You have no idea how much this will mean to them.”  Things started getting busy for the descent, approach and landing.

After landing, we cleared the runway and taxied to the ramp area.  The ramp is huge with 15 gates on either side of the alleyway.  It is always a busy area with aircraft maneuvering every which way to enter and exit.  When we entered the ramp and checked in with the ramp controller, we were told that all traffic was being held for us.  “There is a team in place to meet the aircraft”, we were told.  It looked like it was all coming together, then I realized that once we turned the seat belt sign off, everyone would stand up at once and delay the family from getting off the airplane.  As we approached our gate, I asked the copilot to tell the ramp controller we were going to stop short of the gate to make an announcement to the passengers.  He did that and the ramp controller said, “Take your time.”

I stopped the aircraft and set the parking brake.  I pushed the public address button and said, “Ladies and gentleman, this is your captain speaking.  I have stopped short of our gate to make a special announcement.  We have a passenger on board who deserves our honor and respect.  His name is private XXXXXX, a soldier who recently lost his life.  Private XXXXXX is under your feet in the cargo hold.  Escorting him today is army sergeant XXXXXXX.  Also onboard are his father, mother, wife, and daughter.  Your entire flight crew is asking for all passengers to remain in their seats to allow the family to exit the aircraft first.  Thank you.”

We continued the turn to the gate, came to a stop and started our shutdown procedures.
A couple of minutes later I opened the cockpit door.
I found the two forward flight attendants crying, something you just do not see.
I was told that after we came to a stop, every passenger on the aircraft stayed in their seats, waiting for the family to exit the aircraft.  When the family got up and gathered their things, a passenger slowly started to clap their hands.  Moments later more passengers joined in and soon the entire aircraft was clapping.  Words of “God Bless You, I’m sorry, Thank you, Be proud, and other kind words were uttered to the family as they made their way down the aisle and out of the airplane.  They were escorted down to the ramp to finally be with the loved one lost.

I never did see the family.  Another soldier died, another family grieved and we did what we could.  That is the way it works sometimes.  I get a call from the cabin and we work as a team to do what we can.  That day everybody from the flight crew, to the operations center, to the 184 passengers onboard, we did what we could.  Many of the passengers disembarking thanked me for the announcement I made.  They were just words, I could say them over and over again, but nothing I say will bring that soldier back.  I respectfully ask that all of you reflect on this day and the sacrifices that millions of men and women have made to ensure our freedom, safety, and the right to live a good life.

Be safe,

FlyGuy."

Krauthammer Sounds off on Hillary Email Dump, Explains Why He Thinks ‘Whole Release Is a Farce’ | Video | TheBlaze.com:

"Conservative political pundit Charles Krauthammer reacted to the release of the first batch of Hillary Clinton emails, calling the “whole release” a “farce.”

“This is an echo of what her own press secretary said, who said there isn’t a shred of evidence. And as I’ve said there is no shred of evidence because she shredded the evidence. This whole release is a farce,” the syndicated political columnist said. “What is being released now … is stuff that was scrubbed and cleansed and decided upon, chosen by her own people, acting in her own interest, rather than … people with obligation to the public.”

Georgia family wants Berghdahl held accountable

Georgia family wants Berghdahl held accountable - KYTX CBS19.tv - News, Weather, & Sports | Tyler-Longview:
"LOGANVILLE, GA (WXIA) – Once hailed a military hero, US Army Sergeant Bowe Berghdahl could now face life in prison.
Nine months after he was freed in a controversial prisoner swap, Berghdahl is charged with desertion and endangering fellow soldiers.
Shannon and Mark Allen (Photo: Shannon Allen's Facebook Page)Soldiers from Georgia, from the National Guard's 48th Infantry Brigade, risked their lives searching for Bergdahl when they thought he was an unwilling captive of the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Master Sgt. Mark Allen of Loganville was among them; he risked his life during the search and he will never be the same.
He cannot speak for himself now. He is paralyzed and needs constant care because he was shot in the head by an enemy sniper in Afghanistan.
Allen was wounded while he and his fellow Georgia National Guard soldiers were trying to find and rescue Bergdahl soon after he disappeared in 2009.
Allen's wife, Shannon Allen, was not aware of the circumstances when she and the community welcomed her wounded husband home in December, 2011.
But now, many blame Bergdahl -- not only for Master Sgt. Allen's brain injuries and paralysis, but also for the deaths of at least six other soldiers who also helped search for Bergdahl.
They could never have known, then, that Bergdahl would be charged with desertion.
This past June when the U.S. traded Bergdahl for five Taliban prisoners and brought Bergdahl home, Shannon Allen unleashed her fury in a Facebook post that shot around the world --
"Meet my husband," she wrote, "injuries directly brought to you by the actions of this traitor," Bergdahl.
On the phone with 11Alive News on Wednesday, Ms. Allen said she would not comment now on the decision to charge Bergdahl with desertion.
But last June she was quoted in the Walton Tribune [subscription required], saying, "I wish [Bergdahl] no ill will. I am glad he is no longer a prisoner... People lost their lives - even Mark, who no longer has the life he had before. I just think [Bergdahl] needs to face the consequences. He still needs to be held accountable for what he did."
One of the two charges against Bergdahl -- endangering the lives of fellow soldiers -- carries a maximum penalty of life in prison."

Constitution Revolution: How One Amendment is Actually Unraveling the Constitution | TheBlaze.com:

"Unfortunately, in 1913 we ratified the 17th Amendment which set up the system we have today where senators are directly elected by the people. That amendment stripped the states of their voice in Washington, D.C. More importantly, it removed the biggest check we had on the power of our federal government.

If you want to know why it seems like it’s impossible for us to rein in our federal government, this is a huge part of it."

Do Helmets Prevent Head Injuries?

Do Helmets Prevent Head Injuries? « Science-Based Medicine
A cycling enthusiast asked me about helmets. It seems compellingly obvious to me that a head impacting the pavement without a helmet is likely to sustain more damage than a head protected by a helmet. He challenged that, citing BMJ article by Ben Goldacre that questioned whether the evidence showed that helmets do any good. He said I was making a non-evidence-based assumption and challenged me to actually look at the evidence, so I did.
Goldacre says there is a:
complex contradictory mess of evidence on the impact of bicycle helmets. Like most places where there’s controversy and disagreement, this is a great opportunity to walk through the benefits and shortcomings of different epidemiological techniques, from case control studies to modeling.
He proceeds to give a lesson in epidemiology. He points out that there are a lot of emotion involved, and that epidemiologic studies, because of their inherent imperfections, are probably not capable of resolving the debate.
There are basically two questions:
  1. What is the effect of wearing a helmet for the individual?
  2. What is the effect of a public policy that promotes or requires helmet use?
He shows why research has difficulty answering both of those questions, and covers some of the possible confounding factors:...

Secret Bank of England taskforce investigates financial fallout of Brexitian

Secret Bank of England taskforce investigates financial fallout of Brexit | Business | The Guardian
News of undercover project emerges after Bank staff accidentally email details to the Guardian including PR notes on how to deny its existence
Bank of England officials are secretly researching the financial shocks that could hit Britain if there is a vote to leave the European Union in the forthcoming referendum.
The Bank blew its cover on Friday when it accidentally emailed details of the project – including how the bank intended to fend off any inquiries about its work – direct to the Guardian.
According to the confidential email, the press and most staff in Threadneedle Street must be kept in the dark about the work underway, which has been dubbed Project Bookend.
Brexit – what would happen if Britain left the EU?
It spells out that if anyone asks about the project, the taskforce must say the investigation has nothing to do with the referendum, saying only that staff are involved in examining “a broad range of European economic issues” that concern the Bank.
The revelation is likely to embarrass the bank governor, Mark Carney, who has overhauled the central bank’s operations and promised greater transparency over its decision-making..."

Man burned in blast making hash oil sues butane businesses

Man burned in blast making hash oil sues butane businesses - Washington Times:
"PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon medical marijuana patient who was badly burned in an explosion while he was legally using butane as a solvent to make hash oil is suing the makers and sellers of the fuel.
Kevin Tveisme, 28, of Portland, was injured in 2013 when his furnace clicked on, igniting butane vapor.
The explosion destroyed his garage and injured a friend, Joseph Westom, who died 18 days later.
Treating marijuana with butane as a solvent extracts the potent hash oil at a low cost, but butane vapor is volatile.
Explosions have become more common with the spread of legal medical and recreational marijuana.
As a medical marijuana cardholder, Tveisme was allowed to make hash oil under Oregon law, the lawsuit says.
Although the butane canisters had a “flammable” marking, the lawsuit says, the butane should have come with stickers and instructional brochures specifically warning of the volatility of the butane’s vapor.
The lawsuit also says the odorless butane should have been treated, like natural gas, with a smelly chemical to make its dangers obvious."

We are "educating" a generation of wimpy morons-----Students think John Boehner should resign because of 'Deflategate'

VIDEO: Students think John Boehner should resign because of 'Deflategate':
Students and visitors at the University of Colorado think John Boehner (R-Ohio) is responsible for Deflategate and should resign "immediately," according to a series of interviews conducted on the Boulder campus.
The video, which promotes this summer's Western Conservative Summit, presented students with a non-sequitur asking if they believe John Boehner, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, should be forced to resign over the totally unrelated "Deflategate" incident in which the New England Patriots allegedly underinflated AFC championship game footballs.
"Uum...I think so, I think you just gotta keep it fair," one girl answered when asked if Boehner should resign.
"Personally, I don't think he's [John Boehner] responsible for Tom Brady's actions, and I don't know if he was involved. They need to do a little bit more investigation [sic]."

It was during his commencement address that President Obama warned the graduating class that they better not go around denying climate change, because denying climate change would be a “dereliction of duty.”

The Environmental Insane Asylum

The Environmental Insane Asylum:

"Climate change is not a threat and most certainly there is no global warming. As Prof. Bob Carter, a geologist at James Cook College in Queensland, Australia, has written, “For many years now, human-caused climate change has been viewed as a large and urgent problem. In truth, however, the biggest part of the problem is neither environmental nor scientific, but a self-created political fiasco.”

The fact that the Earth is now into the nineteenth year of a natural planetary cooling cycle seems to never be acknowledged or reported. “The problem here,” says Prof. Carter, “is not that of climate change per se, but rather that of the sophisticated scientific brainwashing that has been inflicted on the public, bureaucrats and politicians alike.”

In a book I recommend to everyone, “Climate for the Layman” by Anthony Bright-Paul, he draws on the best well-known science about the Earth noting that “Since there is no such thing as a temperature of the whole Earth all talk of global warming is simply illogical, ill thought out, and needs to be discarded for the sake of clarity. The globe is warming and cooling in different locations concurrently every minute of the day and night.”
