American “mainstream media” often act as apologists for China’s Communist Party, noted Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), offering his remarks on Friday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Tonight with host Alex Marlow while discussing the coronavirus outbreak.
Marlow invited Cotton’s assessment of America’s news media “parroting Beijing propaganda” to their audiences “as if it’s true.

"A recent study by the University of Leeds in the U.K. says rich people are most to blame for human-induced climate change.
As reported by the BBC, the wealthiest 10% of people in the 86 countries surveyed consume 20 times more fossil fuel energy than the poorest 10%.
The largest disparity is in the transportation sector, where the top 10% consume 187 times more fossil fuel energy than the bottom 10%.

Britain placed second with a score of 77.9, Netherlands third at 75.6., Australia fourth at 75.5 and Canada fifth at 75.3.”

"I think it’s also worth pointing out that we’re not very good at preparing for things that happen every hundred years.
The last comparable event was in 1918.
So we pay people to prepare, but it’s like an army that hasn’t fought a war in a while — they go through the motions, but then have to learn on the job when something actually happens.
I’ve been very critical of the CDC and the FDA for getting in the way, but nobody has a fire brigade ready to go for something that happens less than once in a lifetime.--Posted by

"Today, New York is suffering the nation’s worst outbreak of coronavirus and is pointing the finger of blame at the federal government.
But listen to the deadly advice that New York City’s leadership was giving to it residents even as the plague exploded."

As this deadly virus emerged from Eastern China and began to spread inexorably across the globe, clearly headed here, leaders in New York not only failed to shield their citizens from it. They took affirmative and aggressive steps to increase the risk to the population. Why would they do that? Because they were far more worried about being called racist than protecting human lives. That’s not an overstatement.

Who can argue against this common sense?

"Los Angeles County’s sheriff on Tuesday had initially urged all gun stores on Tuesday to close this week and threatened enforcement, calling such businesses “non-essential” amid the coronavirus outbreak.
But by the evening, after the top lawyer for the county expressed an opposing view, arguing those shops should be open, Sheriff Alex Villanueva reversed his stance, deciding to suspend enforcement efforts to close gun stores.
...But Villanueva’s calls for gun shop closures contradicted with a statement issued by the top lawyer for the county..."

Barr Smacks Down Report That DOJ Sought Ability to Detain Defendants Indefinitely
"...Some reports said the Justice Department was asking for the power to detain defendants indefinitely.
However, Attorney General William Barr told Fox News on Thursday that those reporters are false, “It’s cockamamie nonsense.”
“It’s a gross mischaracterization,” he added.
Instead, Barr said that the Justice Department had asked Congress for ideas on how to help judges grappling with deadlines as courts across the country are closing due to fears about the spread of the coronavirus.
“The whole legal system is rife with deadlines,”
Barr said, adding, “You have so many days to appeal a decision and so on.”

The reports sparked bipartisan outrage
...Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) blasted the reported request as “abhorrent,” as IJR has previously reported.
“It does not matter how urgent times are. We have to make sure that we retain our civil rights. And there’s no reason for us to be waiving folks’ civil rights in an emergency,” she said during an interview on CNN."

Clarice Feldman - The Great Iggy weighs in: Seems to me there's a...
"The Great Iggy weighs in: Seems to me there's a lot of confirmation bias going on for just about everybody.
First, that Imperial College Ferguson guy didn't "correct" his earlier claims
His original numbers [which I didn't even see until today] were his estimate of what would happen in the UK and US if nothing was done.
I believe he had a range but the only numbers quoted by the press of course were his maximums of 2.2 million deaths in the US and half a mill in the UK.
His new numbers [ie 20,000 or likely many fewer than that in the UK] are not due to him looking back and saying 'OMG, I got everything wrong' the first time.
Those are the numbers based on the steps that have been taken in the UK to prevent the spread of it. He did say the R0 number may be closer to 3 than 2.5 but that doesn't change his estimate from 500,000 dead to 20,000.
And we've known since January in China that it mostly kills old people with comorbidities, so his pointing out probably half the victims would have died in the next year anyway was not some new admission or data point either.
And the Oxford study which supposedly contradicts his is based on an iffy assumption or two as detailed in this Reason article exploring its conclusions; Half of United Kingdom Already Infected With Coronavirus, Says Oxford Model.
This article notes a similar issue; Iceland is Doing Science — ~50% of People with COVID-19 Not Showing Symptoms, ~50% Have Very Moderate Cold Symptoms [UPDATED]
The update is that if, as reported, there is an 80% false positive rate on a bunch of these tests then there in fact are not scores of millions of asymptomatic carriers walking around.
The guys contradicting the other guys seem to rely on even iffier assumptions than the dudes they're "correcting".
Everybody, except our congressional and nevertrump psychos, would like this to be much less harmful than it seemed at first look.
Hopefully not so much so that we believe things that have not much basis in fact."

Bringing pharmaceutical production back to the United States would create more than 800,000 American jobs, economists say.
A study by the Coalition for a Prosperous America’s Steven Byers and Jeff Ferry reveals that the U.S. could add hundreds of thousands of good-paying manufacturing jobs for American citizens and reduce its dependence on foreign countries like China if it reshored all pharmaceutical production.

COVID-19 Deaths So Far: Where Is the Crisis? | Power Line
COVID-19 DEATHS SO FAR: WHERE IS THE CRISIS?
I have updated this chart a number of times, based on data from the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control, and will continue to do so. It shows, for one thing, how far COVID-19 has to go before it equals the average seasonal flu mortality, worldwide. If I had to predict, I would guess that it will eventually reach the average level. Will it get to 2x the average number of flu deaths, worldwide? Looking at current trends, I don’t see how that will happen. But time will tell.
Likewise in the U.S. You still can’t see the bar for COVID-19, but it is there: 994 deaths so far, per the CDC, compared with 61,000 caused by the flu virus just two years ago. The Wuhan virus might equal or even exceed that total, but it is hard to forecast that at this point. And anyway, the 2017-18 flu deaths barely merited a news story, let alone a radical, economy-destroying shutdown. What has changed?
Even if the U.S. death total eventually amounts to, say, three times the toll of the flu just two seasons ago–around 180,000 dead–what is the justification for the extraordinary measures our governments have taken, which are in the process of crushing our economy?
