As congresscritters chug toward the fiscal cliff, they should gaze upon a $151 billion plan by Amtrak to upgrade 457 miles of its system.
Adjusting for inflation, just three times that price allowed an earlier Congress to build the entire Interstate Highway System, which was then more than 100 times the mileage of this proposed Amtrak fix-up.
nd unlike the national choo-choo train, the highways were paid off entirely by user fees, rather than juiced along with lots (and lots) of general taxpayer dollars.
