...This is what Swope, other Michigan clerks and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson say they need for the general election in November:
- ...They need double the number of workers for November — for jobs demanding increasingly long hours and relatively low pay, combined with the risk of exposure to the coronavirus. For the primary, at least one clerk used federal aid money to pay poll workers $50 bonuses in the form of hazard pay.
- They support another bill before the Legislature that would allow poll workers to spell each other off in shifts.
- Benson anticipates needing an additional $15 million in federal funds to cover the cost of hiring more people, acquiring more election equipment, such as high-speed tabulators and automated letter openers, and combating misinformation about the security of absentee voting. Whether that money is available could depend on details of a fifth — and possibly final — coronavirus relief package, still stalled in Congress.
