Feds' role in schools re-emerges as 2012 issue

Feds' role in schools re-emerges as 2012 issue - Washington Times
During an Aug. 15 campaign stop in Iowa, Mr. Perry said he doesn’t “think the federal government has a role in education.”
A few days later, Mr. Duncan shot back, telling the Bloomberg news agency he feels “very, very badly” for the students of Texas, a rare example of the education secretary using his pulpit to take political shots at Republicans.

It does seem that more federal government $$ results in worse student performance.

Articles: That Federal Bank Bailout in 2008 Was Bigger Than We Knew. A Lot Bigger
Thanks to some hard digging and a willingness to engage in litigation by Bloomberg News, we now have the benefit of their truly astonishing analysis of the scope and dimensions of the federal government's fall, 2008 bailout of the American and European banking industries.

Remember the TARP, the U.S. Treasury Department's highly controversial, $ 500 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program?
That was only the tip of the iceberg.
Think: $ 1.2 trillion.
That's right.
One trillion, two hundred billion dollars as of December 5, 2008 - when Wall Street's emergency borrowing for the federal government peaked.

FCC finally kills off fairness doctrine

FCC finally kills off fairness doctrine - Brooks Boliek - POLITICO.com
The FCC gave the coup de grace to the fairness doctrine Monday as the commission axed more than 80 media industry rules.
Earlier this summer FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski agreed to erase the post WWII-era rule, but the action Monday puts the last nail into the coffin for the regulation that sought to ensure discussion over the airwaves of controversial issues did not exclude any particular point of view

Muskegon County reorganizes staff positions at airport

Muskegon County reorganizes staff positions at airport MLive.com
In addition to the reduction in the general fund contribution to the airport operations, the change will provide another employee to assist with snow removal from the airport's runways during the winter months.

Why is another employee needed "to assist with snow removal" when the airport has been garnering international awards for its snow removal expertise?
http://www.mlive.com/news/muskegon/index.ssf/2010/11/muskegon_county_airport_recogn.html

And doesn't hiring two employees to replace one also mean that the county's taxpayers will be supporting two part timers on unemployment when they're laid off?

Black's Dilemma With Obama

Black's Dilemma With Obama - Star Parker - Townhall Conservative
Election of our nation's first black president is delivering an unexpected message to our black population.
Blacks are discovering that what a man or woman does -- their actions -- is what matters, not the color of their skin.
It seems ridiculous to point out that this was supposedly the point of the civil rights movement. Purge racism from America.
But blacks themselves have been the ones having the hardest time letting it go.

When the motel opened in April 1964, it was the top of the local market. Among the first guests was former Vice President (and future President) Richard M. Nixon, who stayed at the brand-new Holiday Inn during a Muskegon visit June 8, 1964, to speak at a Republican fund-raiser.

Rime of the Ancient Democrat

Articles: Rime of the Ancient Democrat
I think sentient Democrats are watching their party's chances in 2012 slip away, and had they not made such a big deal of claiming all opposition to Obama was racist in motivation and effect (see, e.g., this) , they would now be urging him to quit and seeking a new contender for his office.

Like Coleridge's ancient Mariner, however, they can only stand on deck with that albatross around their neck watching both the White House and the Senate slip from their grasp just as did so many state governorships and the House of Representatives.

A new Zogby poll, “Arab Attitudes, 2011,” has revealed that President Obama’s charm offensive in the Arab world has failed.

Team Obama deals the race card against Perry

Team Obama deals the race card against Perry Timothy P. Carney Politics Washington Examiner
The MSNBC attacks on Perry were egregious. First, on Monday night, liberal host Ed Schultz ran a clip of Perry in Iowa talking about the national debt. Perry spoke of "that big black cloud that hangs over America -- that debt, that is so monstrous," Perry said.
But Schultz cut off the Perry clip before the words "that debt" and asserted flatly, "that black cloud that Perry is talking about is President Barack Obama."

There they go again....

Three Dead In Weekend Air Show Accidents

Three Dead In Weekend Air Show Accidents

It was a tragic weekend for air shows as three fatal accidents occurred, killing a wingwalker and solo aerobatics performer in the U.S. and a member of the Royal Air Force's Red Arrows at a show in England.

On Sunday, wingwalker Todd Green was trying to perform his signature transfer from a wing to the skid of a helicopter when he fell about 200 feet to his death at the Selfridge Air Show near Detroit. By tragic coincidence, Kyle Franklin, whose wingwalking wife Amanda died of burns suffered in a March crash in Texas, was performing in his first air show since his wife's death and witnessed the accident. "It's really tragic," Franklin told reporters. "We are not thrill seekers trying to cheat death. We love what we do. We all know the risks involved."

On Saturday, Red Arrows pilot Flt. Lt. Jon Egging died after a low-level ejection in his Hawk aircraft at the Bournemouth Air Show and Bryan Jensen was killed when his highly modified Pitts Special, called The Beast, crashed on the field at the Kansas City Aviation Expo Air Show.

Egging was in formation with the Red Arrows when he split from the others and called a Mayday. Witnesses said he maneuvered the small jet trainer away from populated areas. His body was found face down in a river, not far from the wreckage of his aircraft. His wife and other members of his family attended the air show. Egging is being hailed as a hero. Jensen, a Delta Airlines 747 pilot, had been performing in air shows for 15 years. The aircraft, which had a modified Russian radial engine boosted to 412 horsepower, impacted vertically and caught fire.
