White House Makes Startling Admission About Americans Who Have Fought Alongside Islamic State | TheBlaze.com:
"Some American citizens who have traveled to Syria and Iraq to fight with Islamic State militants have already returned to the United States, White House officials reportedly confirmed on Monday.
A senior White House official told reporters that the FBI is currently “looking at” the individuals, including “those who’ve gone, those who’ve tired to go, some who’ve come back and are under active.”

The War on Poverty Has Been a Colossal Flop

The War on Poverty Has Been a Colossal Flop:

"Today, the U.S. Census Bureau will release its annual report on poverty. This report is noteworthy because this year marks the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson’s launch of the War on Poverty. Liberals claim that the War on Poverty has failed because we didn’t spend enough money. Their answer is just to spend more. But the facts show otherwise."

How to lose a war before it begins

How to lose a war before it begins « Hot Air
Retired Marine Gen. James Mattis, who served under Obama until last year, became the latest high-profile skeptic on Thursday, telling the House Intelligence Committee that a blanket prohibition on ground combat was tying the military’s hands. “Half-hearted or tentative efforts, or airstrikes alone, can backfire on us and actually strengthen our foes’ credibility,” he said. “We may not wish to reassure our enemies in advance that they will not see American boots on the ground.”
Mattis’s comments came two days after Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, took the rare step of publicly suggesting that a policy already set by the commander in chief could be reconsidered.
Despite Obama’s promise that he would not deploy ground combat forces, Dempsey made clear that he didn’t want to rule out the possibility, if only to deploy small teams in limited circumstances. He also acknowledged that Army Gen. Lloyd Austin, the commander for the Middle East, had already recommended doing so in the case of at least one battle in Iraq but was overruled.
...The course the president has committed the nation to following will be a dangerous one. As this conflict drags on for months with coalition partners enjoying only limited successes, Americans will soon tire of it.
Presuming ISIS is unable to export terrorism to the West, the American public is likely to want to see this war over long before the mission objectives have been achieved. That’s a recipe for disaster for Iraq and Syria and, eventually, the world.
Obama’s domestic political considerations are leading him to make calls that his generals are uncomfortable with. They would be serving their boss well by keeping quiet, but Obama will only be the boss for another 28 months. Their duty to posterity is far weightier, and it is understandable – even commendable — that U.S. military brass would want to put all the pressure on Obama that they can to get this war right.

Animal cruelty or family fun? 100 protest at Van Andel Arena, accusing circus of hurting animals | MLive.com:
"GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Holding signs denouncing “circus cruelty” of animals, about 100 people protested Saturday outside Van Andel Arena during the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus shows.
Protestors, wearing shirts with the slogan “Circus = Cruelty,” waved posters showing suffering elephants and attempted to pass out informational pamphlets as families streamed out of the arena Saturday afternoon.
Although many families moved quickly past the crowd, avoiding any materials protestors offered, Rockford attorney Ginny Mikita was undeterred by the cold response.
“It’s not about trying to scare children, it’s about trying to educate them,” said Mikita, 50, who specializes in animal protection cases.
It’s about “what goes on behind the scenes and how we treat these magnificent sentient beings.”"

The Crumbling Climate-Change Consensus

The Crumbling Climate-Change Consensus | National Review Online
But they certainly didn’t act like a movement that was winning.
There was a tone of fatalism in the comments of many with whom I spoke; they despair that the kind of radical change they advocate probably won’t result from the normal democratic process.
It’s no surprise then that the rhetoric of climate-change activists has become increasingly hysterical.
Naomi Klein, author of a new book on the “crisis,” This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate, said, “I have seen the future, and it looks like New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.”
In her new book she demands that North America and Europe pay reparations to poorer countries to compensate for the climate change they cause.
She calls her plan a “Marshall Plan for the Earth” and acknowledges that it would cost “hundreds of billions if not trillions of dollars.”
But she has an easy solution on how to pay for it:
“Need more money? Print some!”
What’s a little hyperinflation compared to “saving the planet”?

Instead of Protesting, Climate Marchers Should Read This

Instead of Protesting, Climate Marchers Should Read This:
"World leaders will gather for the United Nations climate summit this week after tens of thousands of protestors marched through Manhattan on Sunday urging action on climate change.
Their time would have been better spent reading Steven Koonin’s Wall Street Journal piece, “Climate Science is Not Settled.”
Before you go labeling Koonin a climate denier, check out his resume.
He served as the undersecretary of science for the Department of Energy during President Obama’s first term.
He’s a theoretical physicist and the director of the Center for Urban Science and Progress at New York University.
And his message is clear and straightforward:
Yes, the climate is changing as it always has.
But the science is far from settled, and there’s great uncertainty into all that goes into a changing climate.
Climate models have serious limitations, and we’re nowhere near understanding variations in the climate enough to make sound policy decisions.
Yet the administration is forging ahead with regulations on conventional fuels that will drive up energy costs for American households and businesses."

....“The company has a very strong view that we should make decisions in politics based on facts, what a shock, and the facts of climate change are not in question anymore,” Schmidt said.
“Everyone understands that climate change is occurring, and the people who oppose it are really hurting our children and grandchildren and making the world a much worse place.
And so we should not be aligned with such people.
They’re just literally lying.”"

Higher Fast Food Wages Could Leave Some Workers Behind

Higher Fast Food Wages Could Leave Some Workers Behind:
chart-featured
"But the reactions wouldn’t stop there:
Faced with higher prices, consumers would buy less fast food, substituting home cooking, prepared food and sit-down dining.
The appeal of fast food, after all, lies in its cheap convenience.
With lower sales, restaurants would most likely raise prices even more (and lay off staff) to maintain profitability.
Sherk estimates that in the short run, prices would rise 38 percent, production and hours worked would fall 36 percent, and wages would decrease to 1 percent of revenue from 3 percent in 2013.
In the long run, some restaurants would close, and the survivors would shift to fewer, higher-skilled workers and more labor-saving technology.
Some workers would come out ahead from a $15 fast-food wage: those with the most experience and the highest efficiency.
Sadly, marginal workers–including those with the worst alternatives and the fewest marketable skills–would be left behind."

A rape epidemic — by women?

A rape epidemic — by women? Column

New CDC report reveals troubling equality when it comes to sexual assault rates.

Writing in Time, Cathy Young notices something interesting in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention figures on rape: Women rape a lot more than people think..

If the CDC figures are to be taken at face value, then we must also conclude that, far from being a product of patriarchal violence against women, "rape culture" is a two-way street, with plenty of female perpetrators and male victims.

How could that be? After all, very few men in the CDC study were classified as victims of rape: 1.7% in their lifetime, and too few for a reliable estimate in the past year. But these numbers refer only to men who have been forced into anal sex or made to perform oral sex on another male. Nearly 7% of men, however, reported that at some point in their lives, they were "made to penetrate" another person — usually in reference to vaginal intercourse, receiving oral sex, or performing oral sex on a woman. This was not classified as rape, but as "other sexual violence." And now the real surprise: when asked about experiences in the last 12 months, men reported being "made to penetrate" — either by physical force or due to intoxication — at virtually the same rates as women reported rape (both 1.1% in 2010, and 1.7% and 1.6% respectively in 2011).
In short, men are raped by women at nearly the same rate women are raped by men.

10 Of The Creepiest Commercials To Ever Hit The Small Screen

10 Of The Creepiest Commercials To Ever Hit The Small Screen - Listverse:

This 1980s commercial was originally created to help sell those horrible chocolate eggs filled with a “surprise” item inside. It features a nightmarish Humpty Dumpty knockoff that Italian candy company Ferrero believed would sell more product.

The company’s CEO at the time, Michele Ferrero, apparently didn’t realize that an increase in sales wasn’t linked to the emotional scarring of children.

Kinder Surprise eggs have been banned from the United States due to an FDA ruling banning confectionery products with embedded non-nutritional objects. The fine for violating this act is currently $2,500.
In 2012, Brandon Loo and Christopher Sweeney had a candy-related run-in on their way back to the US from Canada when border patrol agents found them in possession of the illicit ova, meant to be exotic treats for American family and friends.
Since neither man knew the eggs were illegal, they were let off with a warning.
