Yes. They lie. Endlessly-----The Hole in Tapper’s Ozone Tale

The Hole in Tapper’s Ozone Tale - WSJ:
"The recent Republican presidential debate is largely forgotten, but before the next one we thought at least one question is worth correcting:
Moderator Jake Tapper’s effort to conscript Ronald Reagan into the ranks of climate-change activists.
Reagan “faced a similar situation to the one that we’re facing now,” the CNN anchor said to Senator Marco Rubio, referring to concerns in the 1980s about a hole that formed each year in the atmosphere’s ozone layer.
Mr. Tapper invoked former Secretary of State George Shultz, who “says Ronald Reagan urged skeptics in industry to come up with a plan.
He said, do it as an insurance policy in case the scientists are right.
The scientists were right.”
The point of Mr. Tapper’s tale:
Why not “approach climate change the Reagan way?”
Messrs. Tapper and Shultz are reminiscing about the Montreal Protocol, a 1987 international treaty that phased out chlorofluorocarbons, then common refrigerants in freezers, air conditioners and other appliances.
The worry was that the stuff eroded the ozone layer.
Montreal is celebrated as the paragon of cooperative climate action, largely because the dire predictions—skin-cancer epidemics, for instance—didn’t materialize.
Scientists say the ozone hole has stopped growing, though it still isn’t clear that the treaty is the reason.
In any case, Montreal is no blueprint for climate change, for several reasons.

  • One is scale: Changing the refrigerant in home appliances is hardly the same as phasing out fossil fuels, a foundation for global economic growth, especially in developing countries.

Even the Montreal Protocol allowed developing countries more time to weed out chemicals; imagine how long India would need to dump coal.

  • Then there are the alternatives.

In the 1980s the DuPont company rolled out chemicals that could replace chlorofluorocarbons at a decent price.
There isn’t a similar elixir for fossil fuels.
Renewable energy sources—wind, solar, biomass—generate 13% of U.S. electricity, says the Energy Information Administration, and half of that comes from hydropower.
Solar energy cranks out less than 1%, even with enormous government subsidies.
...Mr. Tapper is not the first to spin what happened in Montreal, and no question we’ll hear the narrative again.
But Republicans should be prepared to explain how this misapplies history."

Sweden is shifting to a 6-hour work day

Sweden is shifting to a 6-hour work day - ScienceAlert:
"..."The Svartedalens experiment is inspiring others around Sweden: at Gothenburg’s Sahlgrenska University hospital, orthopaedic surgery has moved to a 6-hour day, as have doctors and nurses in two hospital departments in UmeĆ„ to the north," The Guardian reports.
While impressions of staff being happier and full of energy aren’t exactly scientific basis for declaring 6-hour work days as 'better' than the 8.7-hour work day endured by the average American, we do have evidence that what we’re doing right now isn’t working.
A study published in The Lancet last month analysed data from 25 studies that monitored health of over 600,000 people from the US, Europe, and Australia for up to 8.5 years found that people who worked 55 hours a week had a 33 percent greater risk of having a stroke than people who worked a 35 - 40 hour week, and a 13 percent increased risk of developing coronary heart disease, while a separate study found that working 49-hour weeks was associated with lower mental health, particularly in women.
And as we reported earlier this month, we probably shouldn’t even be forced to clock on at 9am anyway, with expert Paul Kelley from Oxford University’s Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute saying that society is in the midst of a sleep-deprivation crisis, because our 9-5 working hours are at odds with our internal body clocks.
"Staff should start at 10am… Staff are usually sleep-deprived," Kelley said.
"Everybody is suffering and they don’t have to.
We cannot change out 24-hour rhythms."
Hear that?
Everybody is suffering and we don't have to.
I guess until the rest of the world catches up with Sweden - which btw is also making moves to become the world's first fossil fuel-free nation - we'll all just have to move there... "

An Instance of Warmist Corruption | Power Line:
"We have often written about the fact that the world’s governments pour billions of dollars annually into the global warming project, the object of which is to increase the powers of government.
And yet governments, the main parties that stand to benefit from the warmists’ campaign, pretend that their money is somehow innocent, while any private entity that supports climate research is suspect.
Alarmist scientists have gone so far as to urge the Obama administration to prosecute criminally scientists who disagree with them.
The premise for this proposed RICO investigation was that “corporations in the fossil fuel industry and their supporters”–i.e., scientists who don’t buy the global warming hype–are deceiving the public for financial gain.
This despicable effort, which we wrote about here, is led by Jagadish Shukla of George Mason University and several of his colleagues.
...There’s apparently an $800,000 annual salary and an organization full of Shukla family members that has produced next to no results for the millions received.
Even NSF on their own web page acknowledges that only one paper has been produced out of a 4.2 million dollar grant.
If someone paid me a million dollars a year, I would at least produce some bogus, government-serving science once in a while.
...Perhaps a congressional investigation of Jagadish Shukla’s million dollar a year slush fund–and that’s just what we know about so far–will begin to lift the lid on the worst scientific scandal of all time.
In the meantime, ponder the fact that Shukla wants to send the scientists who rebut his vacuous theories to jail.
With a million dollars a year (at least) at stake, it’s no wonder."

Hillary: Illegal Immigrants Could Elect Clinton

Hillary: Illegal Immigrants Could Elect Clinton - POLITICO Magazine:
"Illegal immigrants—along with other noncitizens without the right to vote—may pick the 2016 presidential winner.
Thanks to the unique math undergirding the Electoral College, the mere presence of 11-12 million illegal immigrants and other noncitizens here legally may enable them to swing the election from Republicans to Democrats.
The right to vote is intended to be a singular privilege of citizenship.
But the 1787 Constitutional Convention rejected allowing the people to directly elect their President.
The delegates chose instead our Electoral College system, under which 538 electoral votes distributed amongst the states determine the presidential victor.
The Electoral College awards one elector for each U.S. Senator, thus 100 of the total, and D.C. gets three electors pursuant to the 23rd Amendment.
Those electoral numbers are unaffected by the size of the noncitizen population.
The same cannot be said for the remaining 435, more than 80 percent of the total, which represent the members elected to the House..."

"Even more disturbing is that nearly every one of these tragic events seems to have one common factor that our politicians, pundits, and the corrupt media simply refuse to discuss.
That common factor is a particular category of drugs called Selective Serotonin Re-uptake inhibitors, SSRIs.
The first of these SSRIs to become part of the medical mainstream was Prozac, which entered the market place about 25 years ago.
It seems that these horrific events started to occur with increasing frequency also about 25 years ago. Coincidence?
It should come as no surprise that in nearly every mass shooting in the past 25 years, the shooter was under the age of 20, suffered from depression, and was proscribed an SSRI to treat the condition.
Other drugs in this class include Zoloft, Luvox, Ritalin, Xanax, Trazodone, and Ambien.
The pharmaceutical industry that created these drugs, the doctors who proscribe them like candy, and the parents who choose to medicate a child instead of raising them are equally at fault!!!"

Yes. It's ALL about the money!-----Climate Alarmist 'Largest Science Scandal in U.S. History'

Climate Alarmist 'Largest Science Scandal in U.S. History':
"The plan by climate alarmists to have other scientists imprisoned for their ‘global warming’ skepticism is backfiring horribly, and the chief alarmist is now facing a House investigation into what has been called “the largest science scandal in US history.”
Rep. Lamar Smith, Chairman of the House Committee on Space, Science and Technology, has written to Professor Jagadish Shukla of George Mason University, in Virginia, requesting that he release all relevant documents pertaining to his activities as head of a non-profit organization called the Institute of Global Environment And Society.
Smith has two main areas of concern.
First, the apparent engagement by the institute in “partisan political activity” – which, as a non-profit, it is forbidden by law from doing.
Second, what precisely has the IGES institute done with the $63 million in taxpayer grants which it has received since 2001 and which appears to have resulted in remarkably little published research?
For example, as Watts Up With That? notes, a $4.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to one of the institute’s offshoots appears to have resulted in just one published paper.
...Steve McIntyre, the investigator who shattered Michael Mann’s global-warming ‘Hockey Stick’ claim, has done a detailed breakdown of the sums involved.
He calls it Shukla’s Gold.
...Combined with Shukla’s university salary,  the total compensation of Shukla and his wife exceeded $800,000 in both 2013 and 2014.
In addition, as noted above, Shukla’s daughter continued to be employed by IGES in 2014; IGES also distributed $100,000 from its climate grant revenue to support an educational charity in India which Shukla had founded.
The story began last month when, as we reported at Breitbart, twenty alarmist scientists – led by Shukla – wrote a letter to President Obama urging him to use RICO laws to crush climate skeptics.
Shukla’s second big mistake was to send the letter not from his university address but from his non-profit, the IGES.
But his first, far bigger mistake, was his hubris in organizing the letter in the first place.
It drew the attention of Shukla’s critics to something which, presumably, he would have preferred to keep secret: that for nearly 14 years, he, his family and his friends have been gorging themselves on taxpayers’ money at IGES; and that this money comes on top of the very generous salary he receives for doing much the same work at George Mason University (GMU).
It’s the latter detail which has led former Virginia State Climatologist Pat Michaels – one of the skeptics who might have been affected by Shukla’s proposed RICO prosecutions – to describe this as “the largest science scandal in US history.”
Under federal law, state employees may not be remunerated for doing work which falls under their state employee remit.
As a Professor at GMU, Shukla is definitely an employee of the state.
And the work for which he has most lavishly been rewarding himself at IGES appears to be remarkably similar to the work he does at GMU as professor of climate dynamics.
If GMU was aware of these extra-curricular payments, then it was in breach of its own policy on “financial conflicts of interest in federally funded research.”
If it wasn’t aware of them, then, Shukla legally may be required to send half of that $63 million in federal grants to his employer, GMU.
For many readers, though, perhaps the biggest take-home message of this extraordinary story is: Who do these climate alarmists think they are?..."

Liberal "tolerance".-----Campus speaker touting men’s rights has fire alarm pulled on her

Campus speaker touting men’s rights has fire alarm pulled on her - The College Fix:
"Cathy Young, a prominent writer critical of exaggerated campus rape statistics and radical feminism, elicited protests during a recent two-stop speaking tour at college campuses in Canada, which included having a fire alarm pulled during one of her speeches.
She and her hosts – the Canadian Association for Equality, or CAFE – were also called “rape apologist scum” by campus protesters and her speech at the University of Toronto on Sept. 24 was moved off campus after a comment urging violence against feminists was posted online.
“Amid an intense reaction to the threat, university administrators felt it was inadvisable to hold my event on campus; the venue was moved to a nearby hotel,” Young explained in Newsday.
“One student activist wrote on a Tumblr blog that ‘chasing these misogynists off campus is a victory.’”
However, the decision to relocate the event was amicable and mutual, agreed upon between CAFE and campus leaders to defuse the situation, the association told The College Fix.
As for Young’s talk at Saint Paul University in Ottawa on Sept. 25, a fire alarm blared throughout the auditorium as the speech was set to begin.
The room was evacuated for roughly 20 minutes, after which point attendees were then allowed back inside and the event proceeded as intended, Young said in an email to The College Fix.
...“But I think right now, there’s an especially dangerous anti-speech trend of equating ‘wrong’ speech with harm and trauma,” she added.
“In some people’s views, a speech like mine actually harms victims of rape.”
...She said in her experience the notion that a speech like hers actually harms victims of rape is dangerous for free speech and academic inquiry.
“This attitude effectively censors and suppresses challenges to the activists’ dogma on everything from the definition of rape and consent to the presumption of innocence and false allegations,” she told The College Fix.
“This will result not only in the stifling of intellectual discourse but in the adoption of repressive campus policies...”

"They Just Don't Want A Job" - The Fed's Grotesque "Explanation" Why 94.6 Million Are Out Of The Labor Force | Zero Hedge:
In a note seeking to "explain" why the US labor participation rate just crashed to a nearly 40 year low earlier today as another half a million Americans decided to exit the labor force bringing the total to 94.6 million people...
... this is what the Atlanta Fed has to say about the most dramatic aberration to the US labor force in history:
"Generally speaking, people in the 25–54 age group are the most likely to participate in the labor market.
These so-called prime-age individuals are less likely to be making retirement decisions than older individuals and less likely to be enrolled in schooling or training than younger individuals."
This is actually spot on; it is also the only thing the Atlanta Fed does get right in its entire taxpayer-funded "analysis."
However, as the chart below shows, when it comes to participation rates within the age cohort, while the 25-54 group should be stable and/or rising to indicate economic strength while the 55-69 participation rate dropping due to so-called accelerated retirement of baby booners, we see precisely the opposite.
The Fed, to its credit, admits this: "participation among the prime-age group declined considerably between 2008 and 2013..."

Major IBM Breakthrough Scales Carbon Nanotube Transistors Below 10nm

Major IBM Breakthrough Scales Carbon Nanotube Transistors Below 10nm | HotHardware
On the consumer side, we're accustomed to chip makers introducing increasingly smaller and faster processors, as has been the case over the past several decades.
But like trying to fold a piece of paper in half over and over again, there comes a point where going smaller may require new methods.
The semiconductor industry is nearly at that point, so what's the solution?
It could be carbon nanotubes. IBM today announced an engineering breakthrough that could fast track the replacement of silicon transistors with carbon nanotubes.
That breakthrough is a new way of shrinking transistor contacts without hampering performance of carbon nanotube devices, which in turn could lead to "dramatically faster, smaller, and more powerful computer chips" that extend capabilities beyond that of traditional semiconductors.
Silicon transistors are tiny switches that carry information on a chip. They've been made smaller year after year, but with Intel and others looking to go below 10nm on a mass scale, chip makers are quickly reaching the point of physical limitation
"IBM has previously shown that carbon nanotube transistors can operate as excellent switches at channel dimensions of less than ten nanometers – the equivalent to 10,000 times thinner than a strand of human hair and less than half the size of today’s leading silicon technology," IBM explains.
"IBM's new contact approach overcomes the other major hurdle in incorporating carbon nanotubes into semiconductor devices, which could result in smaller chips with greater performance and lower power consumption."
What IBM did is forego traditional contact schemes in use today and invented a metallurgical process similar to microscopic welding that chemically binds the metal atoms to the carbon atoms at the end of nanotubes.
IBM refers to its as an "end-bonded contact scheme," which allows the contacts to be shrunken below 10nm without sacrificing performance.
Looking ahead, IBM says its method could overcome challenges related to contact resistance all the way down to 1.8nm.
