What is the FBI hiding in its war to protect Comey? | TheHill:

To deepen the crisis even further, it now appears some of Comey’s former FBI and Justice Department colleagues continue to protect him from accountability.

Three suspicious activities stand out, all intertwined: the so-called Comey Memos, Comey’s controversial testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee and Comey’s book deal."

Gov. Rick Snyder has a plan to get 800,000 Michiganders $60k jobs | MLive.com
"DETROIT, MI - Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday announced a broad plan to train Michiganders for the high-demand, high-wage careers that will power the state's economic future.
Image result for what could possibly go wrong"Our country is facing a huge national challenge about getting people connected to careers," Snyder said at an unveiling of what he calls the "Marshall Plan for Talent" at the Michigan Science Center in Detroit on Thursday.
...The governor projects businesses in Michigan need to fill 811,000 jobs by 2024, with an average salary of more than $60,000 in high-demand fields.
If Michigan doesn't act, he said, those good jobs could go unfilled.
"That would be tragic. We need to hit the accelerator, folks," Snyder said.
...The program focuses heavily on partnerships between businesses and schools...
To implement the plan Snyder is proposing a $100 million investment from the state.
The $100 million will be spent on things like:
  • Scholarships and stipends for low-income Michiganders seeking certifications in high-demand careers.
  • Providing incentives to teachers willing to get additional certifications into areas with shortages, like high school physics and career technical education.
  • Grants to schools creating 'world-class curricula' that collaborate with businesses to create or expand classes that help prepare students for high-demand careers.
  • Sharing best practices from those curricula and creating certification programs.
  • Grants to schools partnering with businesses to train kids on the same high-tech equipment real businesses use.
  • Incentives for increasing the number of students pursuing careers in cybersecurity.
  • An awareness and outreach campaign to promote career opportunities..."

""While government believes that banning certain weapons will prevent potential criminals from acting, such bans mostly hurt those who seek to exercise their Second Amendment rights lawfully," Hamilton continued. "Government should look more carefully on how to mitigate the factors related to criminal behavior rather than infringing upon the rights of law-abiding citizens.""

"House lawmakers want to make English the official language of Michigan.
Image result for its about timeRepublicans led the way in passing a bill Thursday that would require its use in public records.
State departments and local governments still could publish documents in other languages.
...Rep. Vanessa Guerra voted no.
The Saginaw Democrat says the bill could isolate people whose English skills are limited.
Another critic, Rep. David LaGrand of Grand Rapids, says it's a "dark moment" for the country if diversity is not embraced.
The bill heads next to the Senate.
It would need to pass the full Senate and get a signature from Gov. Rick Snyder to become law."

"Illinois governor involved in unusual diversity demonstration involving chocolate milk
Illinois Gov Bruce Rauner took part in an unusual demonstration involving chocolate milk to promote diversity in the workplace during a Black History Month event in Chicago on February 21.
Footage of the event at the Chicago Thompson Center shows Tyronne Stoudemire, Hyatt Hotels’ vice president of global diversity, asking the governor to hold a glass of milk, which Stoudemire said represented the lack of diversity in corporate American leadership: “white men, a few white women, and just maybe an Asian in technology.”
“This chocolate syrup represents diversity,” Stoudemire says, holding up Hershey’s syrup.
Into the broad list of diversity, Stoudemire places “women, people of color, people with disabilities, the aging population, generation X, Y and Z.”..."

The chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence released a letter Tuesday that is being sent to as many as two dozen senior leaders in the Trump and Obama administrations.
The California Republican is asking 10 questions to gauge who received the dossier information and what they did with it.
The dossier, funded by Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic Party and written by British ex-spy Christopher Steele, was circulated by paymaster Fusion GPS during the 2016 campaign."

US Border Officials Haven't Properly Verified Visitor Passports For More Than a Decade Due To Improper Software - Slashdot

US Border Officials Haven't Properly Verified Visitor Passports For More Than a Decade Due To Improper Software - Slashdot:
Image result for Government Failure"U.S. border officials have failed to cryptographically verify the passports of visitors to the U.S. for more than a decade -- because the government didn't have the proper software.
...E-passports have an electronic chip containing cryptographic information and machine-readable text, making it easy to verify a passport's authenticity and integrity.
That cryptographic information makes it almost impossible to forge a passport, and it helps to protect against identity theft.
Introduced in 2007, all newly issued passports are now e-passports.
Citizens of the 38 countries on the visa waiver list must have an e-passport in order to be admitted to the U.S.
But according to the senators' letter, sent Thursday, border staff "lacks the technical capabilities to verify e-passport chips."..."

How Banks Could Control Gun Sales if Washington Won’t - The New York Times
"For the past year, chief executives have often talked about the new sense of moral responsibility that corporations have to help their communities and confront social challenges even when Washington won’t.
See the source imageIn the aftermath of the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that killed 17 students and staff members — and at a time when Washington shows little interest in limiting the sales of assault weapons — there’s a real opportunity for the business community to fill the void and prove that all that talk about moral responsibility isn’t hollow.
Here’s an idea.
What if the finance industry — credit card companies like Visa, Mastercard and American Express; credit card processors like First Data; and banks like JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo — were to effectively set new rules for the sales of guns in America?
Collectively, they have more leverage over the gun industry than any lawmaker. And it wouldn’t be hard for them to take a stand.
PayPal, Square, Stripe and Apple Pay announced years ago that they would not allow their services to be used for the sale of firearms.
“We do not believe permitting the sale of firearms on our platform is consistent with our values or in the best interests of our customers,” a spokesman for Square told me.
The big financial firms don’t even have to go that far.
For example, Visa, which published a 71-page paper in 2016 espousing its “corporate responsibility,” could easily change its terms of service to say that it won’t do business with retailers that sell assault weapons, high-capacity magazines and bump stocks, which make semiautomatic rifles fire faster. (Even the National Rifle Association has said it would support tighter restrictions on bump stocks.)..."

"To hear the architects of that operation complain about the election meddling of a handful of Russian Facebook trolls is comic.
The government that meddled the most in the election was our own. Instead of exposing that interference, the media facilitated it. Journalists served as conduits for criminal leaks from Obama administration officials eager to defame Trump. Instead of exposing Hillary’s dirty tricksters, the media took briefings from them."

"Gun policy expert Lois Beckett of the Guardian US explains the four things you need to know about firearms in America.
...When I actually dug into the data, I was shocked by how little evidence there was behind some of the most prominent gun control policies.
Here are some basic facts that gun rights advocates already know—and that liberals who want to reduce gun violence need to understand.
1. Banning assault weapons would do almost nothing...
2. Owning 17 guns really isn’t that extreme...
3. Only a tiny fraction of America’s guns are used in crimes...
4. Gun crime dropped even as Americans bought more firearms..."
